Elfsborg, Columba Club, clubs who pay their way

1826

Assuming Celtic hold onto their three goal lead over Cliftonville they will almost certainly face Elfsborg in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The script is written for Elfsborg striker and current Celtic employee, Mo Bangura, to score his first goal at Celtic Park, while it is another tie for Henrik Larsson to politically wish both of his former clubs the best of luck.

Elfsborg are five points off the pace after 16 games in the Swedish league. Happy with the draw.

It’s the Columba Club, Blantyre, tonight for Paul McConville, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and myself for what is sure to be another thoroughly enjoyable Question and Answer. Proceedings get underway at 19:30, tickets available at the door.

See you there.

At the turn of the century then St Johnstone chairman, Geoff Brown, told the world his club would rather suffer relegation than indulge in the financial craziness which was then going on in Scottish football.  Relegation soon followed, creating its own financial problems for St Johnstone, while others, most notably for Saints, Dundee, paid over 100% of turnover in player wages.

What do you do when your direct competitors are acting like lunatics, when remaining competitive requires you to behave likewise?  I remember feeling frustrated for Brown and St Johnstone fans.  They did the right thing but suffered as a consequence.

Yesterday’s win, away to Ronsenborg, who are 16 games into their league programme and top of the table, was among the most impressive by a Scottish club in Europe in the last 25 years.  This is a well-run club.  In the last six years they have lost Owen Coyle, Derek McInnes and Steve Lomas, all cherry-picked by better-funded, but not better-organised English clubs, but their progress continues.  Coyle was taken before he reached the Premier League, McInnes won promotion and Lomas reached Europe.  Tommy Wright has now made an impact in Europe within six weeks of being appointed.

Still a lot of work to do next week, Rosenborg will arrive in Perth capable of winning the game, but the scene is set for a special night’s football.

The Celtic Charity Five-a-side tournament takes place on Saturday, 12 October (an international weekend) at Lennoxtown (where the scouts are based, this could be your big chance!!). If you can get a seven player squad together and think you can raise £40-per-head for charity, get your application in now. Ages 18 and over, winners get to take a halftime bow at a subsequent home game. To sign up email janemaguire@celticfc.co.uk.

  1. …PFAyr, I have no detail, what is a basic contract, is there such a thing in a footballers contract?

    I don’t know.

    Just read the official site.

“UEFA can´t enforce it – there is no ruling for that,” he explained. “But I think it would be in Mohamed´s best interests not to play the game, and if I get the opportunity to speak to him, I will be telling him that as well.

The first phrase suggests that something can’t be enforced, a clause in the contract?

  2. Camalar,

If Celtic supporters filled Celtic Park then the board would give even less consideration to old firmism. Actually this blog is more old firm minded than our board. There are people here who constantly update us about the share news from a second division club. Why is this?

  3. Mo Bangura…pfft.

How we gonna stop this goal machine if we sell one of our better defenders for a pittance?

Must be soul destroying looking st your own fans blog and they want shot of you.

On another note…went to the beach at Ayr today. Big and I mean big group of juves ranging from 13-17 all hanging about drinking buckie. Told the wife there’d be trouble later.

I meant about 9 at nite. 4.30 they kicked off an rite in the middle of the melee is a ned (is there any other kind?) with the butchers apron shorts on.

Nice town Ayr…pity about the locals;-)

We also have Mulgrew and Lustig who can play in there, with what looks some decent youth coming through, then we have been linked with others.

I would sell if offer was right, maybe 2.5. ?

    Hail Hail

  5. John o Neil

We are revelling in their demise ….the board are missing their existence for financial reasons

    Your comment is disingenuous

Ive spent a lottttt of time in manchester in the last 13 years. .. doubt they will be impressed with the celtic experience as they believe they are the biggest and best club on earth .

Not sure if any bhoys at work are dodging it on Tuesday night.

  7. John O Neil,

Yer haverin, this board have done nothing to stop the resurgence of the old firm even in the face of blatant corruption, the BHOYS on this board are simply keeping the spotlight on that corruption, something the establishment and apparently our board would rather we didn’t do.

Seems in this case least said soonest mended eh

No Ayr locals go to Ayr beach in the sun …many much nicer / quieter places to go

    Dunure.. Croy…

    Ayr beach …neds and Huns

  10. Pfayar,

They already are deceased. Why do people give us updates about who this second division club sign? Either they are dead or they are the same? Our board quite rightly have to consider lost revenue(as a result of Rangers’ collapse) as they are not living in some cuckoo land where money is irrelevant. They have to protect Celtic. They get no appreciation from many of our own but I am thankful we have them. Fill Celtic Park and the board will think even less about lost revenue. It makes me cringe when we read jokes about Ally McCoist and others who have no relevance to Celtic. It is old firmism.

  11. TBJ,

Interesting talk last week on blog about Celtic building a hotel etc to self fund.

Your boss down in Manchester was telling me last week, the hotel being built right at Trafford park, is being built for one of the Neville’s, with MU objecting, but being turned down.

Now why did MU not build one ?

    Hail Hail

  12. John Oneil

    Sorry friend

I revel in their discomfort …cannae help myself

  13. Camalar, I admire your tenacity but feel you are devoid of balance in relation to the Celtic board. They are the best we could hope for. Goodnight.

  14. Bangura is a coo. If he scores against us then we should sell Wilson.

Think that about covers the previous pages.

  15. Worrying about mo bangura?

    Honestly???

The problem with bangura at Celtic (imo) he was trying too hard …

Against us?? He WILL try too hard.

If we play to our potential, then we will comprehensively beat Elfsborg.

Samaras over there will strike fear into them.

Celtic park? Show me a team who fancys that ?

The prem at the stadium does very well as do the ones at the trafford centre. One would think utd would invest in one themselves

Was that neil Hughes you were ttalking to… liverpool fan ;)))

  17. Ibicevic will be a revelation here, his scoring record last season in Europes best league was brilliant.

Did he not score a hatrick last week for Bosnia too

  18. The Boy Jinky on

    HT

Cheers… if you had been on earlier you could have saved hunners of posts ;)))

  19. Craigellachie10 on

I would keep big Kelvin unless we qualify for the CL and Jose comes in for Hooper offering David Luiz and Mata in part ex.

  20. TBJ

No the MU fan up for a spell from bridgewater

HT, you missed out on the hotel with all the money :-)

    Hail Hail

  21. 50 shades of green on

so if wee mo bang bang plays against us thats him cup-tied then . good saves us having to recall him for Lisbon next year.

  22. WeeFra

Hope you, the missus, your wee maw and the chooks are well!!

    Doc/TBJ/Paolo

Bangura is hopeless. Yes, like in any football game there is a chance that he could pull off a master stroke and score against us. But jings it would be a bigger comeback than Lazarus!

  23. HT – well said!

The previous pages of wittering had me thinking we were up against; Der Bomber, the Vulture or the Mongoose!

  24. TBJ/PFayr, didn’t spot wan Celtic top all day!

On a brighter note, finished up with a nice wee fish supper for £4 each. However, had to wait 15 minutes for it as the person in front ordered 12 fish suppers, 2 black puddings and a portion of fritters. Weird thing was that there was no sign of the magic bus.:-)
