Emerging talent, Slovenian reaction, footballs morals

1393

Delighted to hear Ronny Deila is planning to rest players ahead of Tuesday’s Cup Final.  There is plenty to be gained from playing the next wave of Callum McGregors at Inverness tomorrow, and little to be lost in the league race.

Our unique position in world football, a club who are so massively bigger than all others they are not involved in a proper competition to win the league, has more drawbacks than advantages, but we need to exploit this position by developing emerging talent when the stars align.

The morning after the day before the Slovakian media were very respectful of Celtic.  There was an acceptance that their assessment of Celtic was based on two unrepresentative performances against Legia.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Slovenian coverage was the appreciation of the “modern football” Celtic played.  Assessments of Maribor’s chances in the return leg were pragmatic.  Expectations are low, but with the tie level, they know they still have a chance.  Hopes are, that Maribor’s misplaced optimism is viral, and that Celtic will be infected by the same disease.

Celtic’s job on Tuesday is to make sure they treat Maribor as though they were Bayern Munich.

Oh Malky.  You and I both know that football is remarkably indifferent to moral uncertainty, the actions over the last 24 hours of the thoroughly reprehensible League Managers’ Assocation testify to that.  Practically anything is forgiven or overlooked, but only up to a point.  Malky MacKay has been implicated in attacks against Chinese, Koreans, black people, gays and Jews, quite a unique full house.

Cardiff City have already leveraged this to obtain a grovelling apology and have now cost him a seven figure contract, offered by his friend at Crystal Palace.  Question is, after the controversy dies down and the obligatory contrition is served, will another club offer him a contract?  I don’t think so.

As far as the football industry is concerned, Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all.  He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff.

That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.

I am friendly with a member of the Green Brigade.

He told me earlier, contrary to the post around 1pm today, there is no planned Tifo or demonstration, before during and after the Maribor game. He wasn’t too chuffed about said post re a Yes display as it is incorrect. He is going to the game tomorrow for those who mentioned about the Green Brigade not going as individuals.

The morning after the Milan game with the William Wallace & Bobby Sands display, I had a discussion with him about it. I said it was the wrong move despite it highlighting the hypocrisy of the OB act. He told me some members were aware of the bother it would cause and it went to a vote about doing the display. It went ahead after the vote which was not unaminously in favour.

When they were allowed into the stadium to set up the Tifo for the Barca game, that was the only assistance they received from the club. They had to bring their own materials & bin bags and dispose of excees material themselves.

I sound one sided in all this but the board’s actions towards them speak for themselves.

We have had our issues with Uefa over the last thirty years and I can understand the board not wanting us to annoy them more but the Green Brigade provide another attraction for teenage fans to go to our game as well as the most important, seeing our team.

The tv & internet coverage of football globally, shows how a group of organised fans having a great time at the game, not allowed here for some reason, has caught the attention of our teenage & early twenty something support and they want to have the same. My teenage son is desparate to get involved in having a singsong ( nothing dodgy), a jump about while watching our team.

Football is forever changing on and off the pitch, and for two elements involved in our club be so distant is not helping us.

When I was younger, it was the Jungle who mainly started the singing and the Celtic end joining in. Now the Green Brigade have taken that position.

By the same logic, did UEFA have a political mandate to celebrate and uphold Nelson Mandela’s beliefs on behalf of us all?

  4. I didn’t get the politician thingie either, what was that all about? So if your a Tory your not welcome at Celtic park? I don’t know if that’s what he ment but that’s what it looked like to me?

UEFA don’t have jurisdiction over and OO march in Edinburgh. They do however have over our stadium when we are taking part in a UEFA competition.

Their stance may be hypocritical but that is a different matter. They’ve sanctioned us before for political banners, it’s senseless in my opinion to goad them.

There’s not protection from our fans previously being given an award.

How can Celtic offer any compromise to he GB when the thanks they will likely get will be another UEFA fine, as a result of the GB “exercising their right to free speech”

    It’s not rocket science

We win a watch by other people not sticking to rules, and then demand the right o defend a section of the support to flout other rules held by the same organisation

Whether the rules are good rules or bad does not matter

  9. Living_in_the_Love_of_the_Commons_People

Probably not and I’d prefer all that stuff was left outside but it’s their game and their rules. We have to abide.

  10. Scottish judges take note.

The use of the word “banter” to describe Malky Mackay’s “disrespectful” text messages has been the focus of widespread criticism. The case raises questions about the way the word is used, says Lucy Townsend.

The League Managers Association’s use of the phrase “friendly text message banter” in relation to former Cardiff City manager Mackay’s texts – which it acknowledged were “disrespectful of other cultures” – provoked an angry reaction.

Eurosport.com has described it as “the day banter died”. Football365.com said the term was “frequently used to obfuscate and trivialise issues that continue to impair football’s integrity”.

  11. The GB are ran by the ultras so don’t be kidding yourself that it’s anything else, Celtic will not and should not give or do them any favours, they have had enough chances that’s for sure, we go with what we have and that’s that, yes, yes, yes, on their day they where the best, but their day has gone unfortunately they got hi jacked for politics and they where found out, sad really.

  12. Hamilton – re the politics in football. You are spot on but as I wrote already this is bigger than just Celtic. The only politics allowed are the mainstream, liberals and the new left are satisfied with the cultural PC stuff ( important as that is, it has been the limit of the centre left ambitions lately, the economic arguments having been surrendered by them)

It is sport in.general where this happens – see the commonwealth games for example, saltire.and the word yes were on occasion banned…..

Celtic get collectively punished for the GB actions. Celtic act on that. I don’t like it, but either there is a mass backlash against this which will involve some pain for Celtic. I’d love to see it, much as I’d love to see Trade Unions facing down laws which hamstring them but would see funds frozen, some unions struggle to survive – the early history of the movement repeated in fact. It’s the only way to successfully defeat unjust law.

But it takes the will of a majority and strong leadership in both cases. I’m willing but I’m not sure many others are. Until it happens the GB and others need to box clever.

As far as I can see there is no other way.

    Is there?

The Green Brigade must stay within the rules, it’s simple. Come support your team and make a noise. I’ve been to a Galatasaray for example. The antics of the GB are small beer when compared to what goes on at an Istanbul derby. It’s just not political, so I would hazard a guess UEFA ignore the pyro, lateral movement etc.

I agree it’s not rocket science to find compromise. In fact it’s only in the world of science, funnily enough you will find absolutes.

  18. td67,

For once, I find myself in agreement with you. I hope they learn a wee bit of common sense.

Tony D, if I understand your last post correctly, it is about the alleged Yes demonstration by the Green Brigade at next Tuesday’s game.

They have not planned a Yes demonstartion at all and I have that from the Green Brigader I know. The club has not particularly been honest with them with regard to getting season tickets for this season.

You expressed your dislike for the Green Brigade post on another Celtic site last year, I think it was Video Celts, with a few choice words which I found over the top.

Your posts cheer me up a lot particularly those ending GIRUY huns but I disagree with the dislike you and some other posters here have for the Green Brigade.

They are not angels by any means but the club has used the positives the Green Brigade provided, Just can’t get enough, the Tifo at the Braca for example without giving any credit to their least appreciated members of our support.

  27. Funny, Radio Clyde used the word “banter” in response to a complaint I made to them about a caller being allowed to continue on Monday night’s phone in after calling Celtic “the manky mob”……………………….

  28. EDB,

  30. As a follow up to my previous post, they did concede the caller should have been cut off but think the word banter will be the least used word in football after this situation has died down.
