Emerging talent, Slovenian reaction, footballs morals

1393

Delighted to hear Ronny Deila is planning to rest players ahead of Tuesday’s Cup Final.  There is plenty to be gained from playing the next wave of Callum McGregors at Inverness tomorrow, and little to be lost in the league race.

Our unique position in world football, a club who are so massively bigger than all others they are not involved in a proper competition to win the league, has more drawbacks than advantages, but we need to exploit this position by developing emerging talent when the stars align.

The morning after the day before the Slovakian media were very respectful of Celtic.  There was an acceptance that their assessment of Celtic was based on two unrepresentative performances against Legia.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Slovenian coverage was the appreciation of the “modern football” Celtic played.  Assessments of Maribor’s chances in the return leg were pragmatic.  Expectations are low, but with the tie level, they know they still have a chance.  Hopes are, that Maribor’s misplaced optimism is viral, and that Celtic will be infected by the same disease.

Celtic’s job on Tuesday is to make sure they treat Maribor as though they were Bayern Munich.

Oh Malky.  You and I both know that football is remarkably indifferent to moral uncertainty, the actions over the last 24 hours of the thoroughly reprehensible League Managers’ Assocation testify to that.  Practically anything is forgiven or overlooked, but only up to a point.  Malky MacKay has been implicated in attacks against Chinese, Koreans, black people, gays and Jews, quite a unique full house.

Cardiff City have already leveraged this to obtain a grovelling apology and have now cost him a seven figure contract, offered by his friend at Crystal Palace.  Question is, after the controversy dies down and the obligatory contrition is served, will another club offer him a contract?  I don’t think so.

As far as the football industry is concerned, Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all.  He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff.

That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.

  4. Youthful rebellion is no longer tolerated. Probably because it was too effective. Expressing non mainstream thoughts and ideas is no longer permitted in group form.

When environmental protest groups ate designated domestic extremists what chance to leftist celtic supporters with Palestine and basque flags have of not being targeted too.

I am torn on this. Like others I am past the youthful rebel stage but I admire young people who care enough to focus attention on issues they care about. So.much youth culture here is sexualised, materialistic emptiness but when young people show signs of dissenting from that they are swatted aside.

But it isn’t Celtic’s fault. They are hammered when our youth rebel. Potitis has been artificially removed from football when those politics are coming from the people, from a collective of ordinary folks, although it seems to be allowed if it is part of the dominant narrative (poppy season will soon be upon us for instance)

If there were no sanctions for singing rebel songs, waving flags and expressing legitimate political points of view then opposition to all of that would be minimal.

It is a small part of the destruction of collectivism among working people. Sport is the new Opiate of the masses, and it can’t and won’t be allowed to develop leftist subcultures that might politicise youth, offend sponsors and advertisers and in some small way challenge the status quo.

What makes Celtic different, more than a club is not the charity work, admirable as that may be, it was/ is themail ability the Celtic community has to feed in to the raising of young peoples awareness of history and therefore politics.

Celtic was a large part of my own politicisation as well as being a sporting relief, a shared space with friends and family and the visible embodiment of my personal family history – the idea of Celtic if not the PLC continues to be that but that was always so, the people with their hands on the tiller and sometimes in the till, had bugger all influence on memory on the Celtic family other than to annoy us,occasionally.

And so it goes on. I think the GB need to be smarter, they need to do their rebel stuff outside and their fabulous atmospherics inside.

Those of us who are still genuinely anti establishment – and I don’t mean the board bashers who are missing the point – need to know that we are in a period of severe repression and that means being smart with our tactics.

  5. Bawsman

The only proof I have is the sound of silence, I would assume that’s why not a shot has been fired,?

Unless as I said it’s still all a wee secrete and that was never part of the bargain, was it?

  6. Dear Lord, where to start?!

A couple of points as I’m taking my daughters out for dinner.

The GB have never, ever claimed that they speak on behalf of the Celtic support.

They speak for themselves believing that they give voice to the origins, traditions and ethos of our club.

There are less than 80 members of the GB. There are approximately 400 seats in section 111.

Any statement like the one issued today has one primary purpose, to provide information to those who sit in section 111 but are not members.

People have said that they should have nominated members who deal with separate issues eg banners, speaking with Celtic officials etc.

    That’s already the case.

The GB have always said that any banner display will have a relevance to the traditions and ethos of Celtic Football Club (obviously there are Celtic supporters who would dispute whether this has been the case but I’m trying to provide information as opposed to giving opinions).

Celtic have never asked to view a banner or display prior to a match. Ever.

The GB are not ‘daft wee boys’. They are made up of males and females ranging mostly from mid 20s to mid 40s. Most are all the men and women that they’ll ever be.

With regards to politics and the threat of UEFA sanctions or fines I’d like to make a couple of points and then ask a question if I may.

    Keep politics out of football?

Firstly, If you stand outside the main door of Parkhead before any home match you’ll see MPs, MSPs and elected local government officials making their way inside. Our own board currently has a Lord sitting on it and in recent times has had a former cabinet minister. At the present time we also have a board member who sits on a Tory government think tank.

Politics and politicians are inside Celtic Park already.

Secondly, UEFA as we well know have been happy to make many political statements of their own.

The death of Mandela and Show Racism the Red Card being two of the more recent high profile example.

    My question.

Who on here can honestly say that they’ve never shouted, chanted or sang a song at a Celtic game that the GB and other Celtic supporters are now being criminalised for by the authorities or being denied their season tickets by those in charge at Celtic?

    Time for tea.

    Hail Hail

Bawsman. Totally agree re the huns sense of entitlement. Their world has never been about merit or fair play, but about “we arra peepel” so everyone else should just bow down and accept their place in the zombieverse.

It’s one of the reasons why they cannot accept what happened to their club, nor indeed the deserts of vast infinity stretching before them, dining at the banquet of consequences.

The results of the 24-year-old’s medical conducted a few days ago came clean with Rubin Kazan also reaching an agreement with Celtic for the loan move to happen.

Wakaso left Moscow on Friday and is expected to be in Scotland later in the evening to meet up with officials of Celtic.

The ex Espanyol man is expected to sign a deal to make his loan move official over the weekend after a work permit request is granted.

Absolutely, if you read my post, you will see the word “impasse”. By that I meant compromises have to be offered by BOTH sides.

IMHO, Free Speech can be upheld, while staying with the boundaries of safety and corporate requirements- and make no mistake UEFA is a corporation.

If they go along to push their politics on everyone that’s a different matter.

At least politicians have a mandate from their voters, the GB don’t.
