Emerging talent, Slovenian reaction, footballs morals

1393

Delighted to hear Ronny Deila is planning to rest players ahead of Tuesday’s Cup Final.  There is plenty to be gained from playing the next wave of Callum McGregors at Inverness tomorrow, and little to be lost in the league race.

Our unique position in world football, a club who are so massively bigger than all others they are not involved in a proper competition to win the league, has more drawbacks than advantages, but we need to exploit this position by developing emerging talent when the stars align.

The morning after the day before the Slovakian media were very respectful of Celtic.  There was an acceptance that their assessment of Celtic was based on two unrepresentative performances against Legia.

Perhaps the most encouraging aspect of Slovenian coverage was the appreciation of the “modern football” Celtic played.  Assessments of Maribor’s chances in the return leg were pragmatic.  Expectations are low, but with the tie level, they know they still have a chance.  Hopes are, that Maribor’s misplaced optimism is viral, and that Celtic will be infected by the same disease.

Celtic’s job on Tuesday is to make sure they treat Maribor as though they were Bayern Munich.

Oh Malky.  You and I both know that football is remarkably indifferent to moral uncertainty, the actions over the last 24 hours of the thoroughly reprehensible League Managers’ Assocation testify to that.  Practically anything is forgiven or overlooked, but only up to a point.  Malky MacKay has been implicated in attacks against Chinese, Koreans, black people, gays and Jews, quite a unique full house.

Cardiff City have already leveraged this to obtain a grovelling apology and have now cost him a seven figure contract, offered by his friend at Crystal Palace.  Question is, after the controversy dies down and the obligatory contrition is served, will another club offer him a contract?  I don’t think so.

As far as the football industry is concerned, Malky’s unforgivable sin is not racism, homophobia or anti-Semitism, these matters are often overlooked as ‘banter’, after all.  He’ll not get another job because he blew millions on players who were useless to Cardiff.

That’s the only kind of offence football really tales notice of.

Their game against Germany was one of the best and one of the toughest for the Champions. Could well be a good asset to the squad, or hopefully the team.

    HT,

I’ve always enjoyed your posts and this site would be poorer without you.

You make some excellent points. I have in the past for many years sang songs I wouldn’t now, or even be allowed to now. In the jungle, in the streets, abroad, at home.

However here are examples I’d like your views on, regarding politics and football.

Simply saying UEFA do this, or CFC do this smacks of 2 wrongs make a right.

Say in a club like Linfield, who will have a large majority of fans who are heavily unionist – what about the supporters who are in fact nationalists? (and there are a few) Are the politics of the majority fair on the minority? Was the politically motivated attack on Belfast celtic a good thing, or would it have been better to have no politics at the football that day?

The assassination of Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics – is this ‘political’ act fair on the rest of the unradicallised arab world? Fair on the athletes who’s political convictions we don’t know? Was politics in sport a good thing that day or should we have left politics out of sport

Is the republican politics of the GB fair on the sections of our support which may actually be unionist? Or at the very least moderates? It’s easy to lose sight of the fact that whilst the PIRA for some people may have being doing a good job in difficult circumstances, others may feel they were ‘gangsters’, or ‘murderers’ Should people within our support that subscribe to such views be subject to songs regarding the armed struggle of republicans? Are we wrong to paint an image of our club as armed republican sympathisers in the eyes of many?

Was the boycott of the 1980 Moscow olympics in the name of politics, fair on anyone?

Were the wars kicked off in Croatia and El salvador by football a good thing or should politics have been left out of sport on those days?

Should Nazi Germany have coerced the English football team into Nazi salutes, I mean it;s only political, or should politics have been left out of football?

Are we only really into politics in sport if we agree with the politics? I ask because this is impossible for 100% of the support to agree on any political standpoint.

So in your own time, what is your answer to these problems? What is your answer to the relatives of people murdered by nutters bringing politics into sport? Do you think politics should be allowed in sport no matter what? Or just your politics?

I’m not trolling. Neganon was asking for grown up dialogue on CQN. OK- how do those here who wish politics to be part of sport square these circles?

    Dear Mr ******

Thank you for your emails of 12 July 2014 and 7 August 2014 to the Prime Minister about the case of HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and Rangers Football Club. As this area falls within the responsibility of HMRC, I have been asked to reply to you.

Whilst I cannot comment on the detail of the case, I hope the following information will be useful.

As you know, the Upper Tribunal decided on 8 July 2014 in favour of the Murray Group, who formerly included Rangers Football Club, in a case involving the use of an Employee Benefit Trust (EBT). We had argued that the tax structure was being used as a way of avoiding Income Tax and National Insurance contributions by both the employer and the employees.

We are disappointed that the Upper Tribunal has upheld the majority decision of the First Tier Tribunal, and we have applied to the court to appeal the decision at the Court of Session.

We are committed to tacking tax avoidance wherever we see it, investigating and closing down schemes that we believe do not work. Tax avoidance is about bending the tax rules to gain an advantage never intended by Parliament. Avoidance often involves contrived, artificial transactions that serve little or no purpose other than to reduce the amount of tax someone pays. Those who use avoidance schemes put additional burdens on the vast majority who pay the right amount of tax. We have been consistent in our approach to dealing with EBT schemes, and have not singled out Rangers.

If avoidance scheme users refuse to accept our position that their scheme does not work and take the case to litigation, we will continue to challenge them. We are very successful in tackling avoidance cases litigated by taxpayers, winning around 80% of cases in the tribunal and courts. In 2013-14 alone our 30 wins protected around £2.7 billion of tax.

An important principle of the UK tax system is that Ministers do not get involved in decisions about individual taxpayers. How we resolve disputes with taxpayers is set out in the published code of governance for resolving tax disputes, which is available at: http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/adr/resolve-dispute.pdf.

The code refers to the published Litigation and Settlement Strategy, which goes into more detail about the basis on which we will resolve tax disputes, including where litigation is pursued to reach a resolution. You can find details at:

    http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/practitioners/lss-guidance-final.pdf.

I think it would also be helpful to clarify that the recent tax case is categorically not the reason why the club was put into liquidation. It is a matter of public record that Rangers was placed in administration by its principal shareholder and director because it was unable to pay its creditors, including HMRC. At the time of liquidation, published court papers showed that the undisputed tax that was owed by the company was approximately £21 million. This is an entirely separate issue from the amount in dispute due to the former owner of the club’s use of the EBT scheme.

You mentioned concerns that confidential information was leaked about the case. These matters were investigated by the Police Service of Scotland in conjunction with HMRC and the Police Force West of Scotland. No evidence was found that there was any leak of information from HMRC.

I hope you find this reply helpful. If you need to contact us again, please quote the reference number at the head of this email.

    Yours sincerely

  30. RWE 18.10 Excellent post sir. It stands out like a beacon and in a way the nonsense that preceded it and followed it, gives it more credence. I suppose it could be said that all of us who post fairly regularly are attention seekers, to some degree. However there are a few who are so blatant about it that they don’t give a monkey’s about anyone else. They use the blog as their personal microphone and anyone who doesn’t like it will be told to GIRUY.

I was one of those who signed up to get the matter heard at last year’s AGM and I remain confident that there is no less conviction and energy being expended by our fellow supporters to reveal all truths, now than then.

The four principals have my thanks and admiration.

Celtic has representation at the highest levels within SFA now and we should expect our unanswered concerns to be on the Agenda at every relevant SFA Board Meeting.

Those representatives will be required to remove themselves from Board discussions but decisions and subsequent Minutes will be available to be filtered back to our guys.

The truth won’t crystallize as soon as we would wish it but patience will defeat the enemy.
