Europe a sideshow to league duty at Fir Park

1000

A Europa League tie against Rennes on Thursday would normally set midweek pulses racing but when Celtic have such a crucial game ahead in the fight for second place Neil Lennon has a major decision to make, does he rest players for the Motherwell game?

Sunday’s game at Fir Park is set to become one of the most important games of the season for Celtic and I’m sure Neil would prefer a clear midweek to prepare for it, but resting players, with the inherent increased chance of defeat, could further damage fragile morale.

Celtic need a confidence boosting win but they need heads focussed on beating Motherwell even more. The consequences of defeat on Thursday are unpleasant, but the consequences of defeat on Sunday are incalculable.

He said: “Listen, we were two games away from the Treble last season. So, I don’t think we need to change that much.

“We don’t need to rebuild the squad. We just need one or two changes and to keep the continuity going.

“We’re in a far better place than at this time last year. I’m hoping to win things on the domestic front and also looking to qualify for the Europa League and do well in Europe.

“It’s important we do that for the players and for my own development as a coach.

“We have a pretty young team and I believe they are talented. We just need to add one or two players now.

“Hopefully we can get Fraser Forster across the line. If not then we have other options to consider for the goalkeeping position.”

    Hmmmmm

To be honest mate I have no idea what goes on in a daily basis at Lennoxtown.

Could we be having our own LeGuen/Ferguson dressing-room power struggle? Who knows.

The only thing I can say is that last season I watched a team that went from a bunch of hopeless nervous wrecks to a team that went 3 times to Ibrox and played the hosts off the park each time and put in some memorable peformances in the run in (plus a few stinkers).

I think we can do it again. How Neil does that is up to him but the clock is ticking and he has to get us back on track very soon.

    Hitting the sack. Nite all.

Jokingly I commented that their Team gave me a fright a couple of weeks ago. The pure venom that came out of their mouths regarding NL and the Celtic support was breathtaking. No apology required amigo, I admired your support of Neil Lennons appointment in the face of fierce criticism from fellow posters. You stuck by the man and your support should be applauded. Don’t weaken now when he needs our support. Willie Mc Stay may have been your first choice, I don’t remember, but I do remember your unreserved support of Neils appointment.

Anyone think he was unfairly judged….?

Jos Hooiveld believes he was never given the chance to impress during his time at Celtic but feels he is showing his true form at Southampton.

The defender is on loan at the Saints from the Scottish outfit and has helped Nigel Adkins side reach the top of the Championship table.

Despite signing in August, he has already made more appearances with Southampton than he managed in two years for Neil Lennon’s side.

    Going well

He told the Daily Record: “It’s going really well for me down here but I never got a run of games at Celtic. I just never got the chance to show people what I could do there.

“The games I did get I wasn’t fit and I didn’t have confidence or rhythm in my play. I wasn’t able to show anything to the fans.

“That wasn’t up to me, it was just how it went. I needed games and it’s nice to be given that opportunity at Southampton.”

The 28-year-old Dutchman is set to stay at St Mary’s until January but could reignite his Celtic career when he returns.

The Hoops have made a disappointing start to the Scottish Premier League season and are already 12 points adrift of leaders Rangers.

Hooiveld admits he is enjoying playing regular games but has not turned his back on Celtic in the long run.

    Get some games

He said: “When I heard Southampton were interested in taking me on loan I didn’t hesitate as I wanted to go and get some games.

“I know the defence has faced a lot of criticism this season but it doesn’t frustrate me that I’m not there.

“The manager chose his own squad and his own players at Celtic for this year and I’m doing really well down here.

“If Johan (Mjallby, assistant manager) says to me in January that Celtic want me back to help them out, of course I’ll be happy to do that. I’m still Celtic’s player and as long as that’s the case, and they want me there, I would go back.”

    .

  13. Nollaig a chara

Jos was pretty poor overall, it has to be said. However, his injury when he arrived may have been a factor in him not getting a consistent run. The Utrecht away game was the end of him, but he claimed he was still feeling the effects of the hamstring injury.

    Could be worth a shout.

  14. Bloke 109 @ 23:42

I am nearly up for my half century shortly and have never managed at football at any level whatsoever and I don’t own any copies of football management software so I may not be best qualified to hold an opinion

However as much as I would have loved Neil Lennon to have been at the helm the next time we win a title I don’t think it is going to become a reality under his stewardship

The man had an exceptional last season but Celtic have a history of exceptional first seasons and fail to deliver thereafter Kayal and Hooper being prime examples

As I have stated I have no managerial experience but I no longer trust the coaching teams abilities

As to who to bring in as replacements well for 1 season anyway I would try a a backroom staff of 5 namely Willie Mcstay Joe Mcbride Peter Grant Paddy Bonnar and just wait for the howls of derision a 1 current Hun coach who was at Celtic Park for 10 years Kenny McDowell

I’ll consider showing sympathy for Naismoth when he considers how his actions affect other players.

He has gone out to cripple opponents, elbow them, get them sent off.

The consequences of his actions have led to fellow professionals losing game time through injury or suspension.

Their families will have suffered the loss of money this entails.

He has no sympathy from me,and your bleeding heart posts over the last few months are getting right on my tits.

Anybody here actually think the threats to Neil and his family has stopped ??

The Mhan is fair game in scotland, anyone can assault him and expect to get away with it.

Have a look at the naesmith tackle and tell me playing professional football in scotland is a saftly run occupation.

As we said the manager is inexperienced, he shone like a star last year, a fresher, sophomore is usualy the teat, how you come through that is what you are, I’m for bacxking Neil through that, if he turns out pish in 3 years then pump him, but not now, he has been used and abused, its our turn.
