European football disinformation

657

I’m hoping suggestions Stefan Scepovic and Kris Commons are struggling for fitness for Thursday is a classic attempt at European football disinformation.

Back in July I wrote about Commons “dependence on one creative talent feels like an unnecessary vulnerability”.  We remain (unnecessarily) dependent on our only creative talent, as subsequent games without him have established.  If he’s not in the starting line-up, we’ll need a radical change of system.

Bringing a second creative talent to the club should be a priority.  On this subject, I hear Bosnian fulcrum, Semir Stilic, who we were reportedly interested in a few years ago, before he detoured for a indifferent spell in Turkey, is now back in Poland with Wisla Krakow and eclipsing his earlier form for Lech Poznan.  We could do worse.

Shocked and stunned at the news Rangers International’s nomad, Daniel Stewart Securities PLC, have had trading in their shares suspended by the Stock Exchange as they were unable to file their accounts to year-end 31 March 2014 on time.  The Ibrox club’s board will be incredulous that the diligence they carried out to ensure they were dealing with an advisor of standing overlooked some fundamentals.

Four days out from the Great Scottish Run, which I’m doing for the Foundation’s work for Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty.  This is our Foundation, established and run by Celtic fans for 19 years.  It’s an important part of the story of where our club came from and what’s important to our mission.  Any donations here, from £1 up, are welcome.

Thanks to everyone who has helped.

  10. Celtic: Emotional Ronny Deila defends his methods

    By STEPHEN HALLIDAY

RONNY Deila has launched an impassioned defence of his methodology as Celtic manager, insisting he is prepared to return home to Norway if it proves unacceptable in Scottish football.

Deila has experienced a chequered start to his tenure with the Parkhead club, winning just seven of his first 15 games in charge and failing to guide them into the group stage of the Champions League.

The 39-year-old has introduced new diet and conditioning regimes at Celtic’s training centre in Lennoxtown and has regularly questioned the fitness levels of his players.

That recently provoked a scornful reaction from Deila’s predecessor, Neil Lennon, but Deila is unapologetic. He is adamant that the Celtic squad are fully supportive of his approach which he stresses was sanctioned by major shareholder Dermot Desmond and chief executive Peter Lawwell prior to his appointment in June.

“There are many roads to Rome, but I have to believe in my way,” said Deila ahead of tonight’s Europa League Group D fixture against Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb at Celtic Park.

“If Celtic or Scotland are not ready for that, then I will go back to Norway. It’s no problem.

“I’m here to do something. I want to make something here. If you don’t do it, then okay, I tried. But I really believe the players are enjoying it and they want to adapt to it. I am so satisfied with their attitude.

“Dermot and Peter are very intelligent. They have seen football for many, many years. They know how to build things. They wanted a change and that’s why I came in. If not, they would have gone for a manager with much more experience and would have done it more like it was done before. It’s a club thing, they are going in a new direction. That’s why I’m here. You have to see from my squad what I was taking over. Some of the players were injured and had operations, some were coming in and were not where they should be.

“When I see the tests they are doing, I see they have a lot to improve. Maybe I see things differently from what Neil was doing. For me, to be professional is to be a 24-hour athlete. If not, then you can go and start working outside football. You can be amateurs again.

“You have to understand that I can’t be stupid when I say things like that and if Neil gets irritated by me saying we can work on how we eat and improve, that’s up to him. If Louis van Gaal was coming in and saying all these things, you would be sitting there nodding your heads. But I come from Norway where you think they are only good at skiing.”

Deila believes his players must aspire to the fitness levels of some of the world’s leading athletes as he attempts to mould them into a side capable of competing successfully in the Champions League every year.

“I really think the Scottish players are open to new things,” added Deila. “Most of the things are not so new, they knew about them already. But are we talking Scotland or are we talking Europe? To win in Scotland, we can still do the same things as before. But to succeed in Europe, you have to adapt to Europe.

“If you tell me that a player can be three or four kilos too heavy and play against Cristiano Ronaldo, then good luck. I get irritated discussing it. You have to understand that the fitness is unbelievable out there. If you see Gareth Bale, that’s Champions League level. So are we not going to try and adapt to that?

“Do you think Andy Murray eats chips? For Andy Murray to win Wimbledon, he did something different to what he did four or five years before. He looks much sharper, much fitter and, if you ask him about that, you will get good answers.

“I have spoken with a lot of good athletes and also looked at a lot of top teams. Everywhere, they are into these things, so I don’t think it is just me. If you went for a trip to Manchester City or Chelsea and saw the professionalism there, I think you would be shocked.

“I want to do something with a big club and you don’t do that in days or weeks. You do it in months or years. You never know when it is the right time or not to take this job. I took over a team who are champions. That’s much better than taking over a team who are bottom of the table.

“Things were being done very well but you have to adapt further. There are always things you can improve. The best athletes and teams are always thinking that, that they have to adapt to do even better.

“It is very hard to do it at a club where the result pressure is so high. You have to do more than just think short term every day. I want to think long term and short term.

“I hope the players question things. We have arguments about a lot of things. But it’s about understanding and talking. People have choices.

“But Celtic is going one way and that is upwards. We are going to develop. If you are going to be into it, you have to make changes yourself. I have to adapt, I have to be a better manager than I was in Norway. I have to learn new things, sacrifice things that I would have done in Norway. It’s the same for my players. They are playing for Celtic, the best club in Scotland, and we are going to compete in the Champions League. You have to make sacrifices for that.

“Nothing shocked me when I came in to the club. The result pressure is unbelievable here and it’s very hard to do something new. You don’t dare to do it because you are afraid to lose. The players also have to adapt to that way of thinking. If you win, everything is okay. If you lose, hell is there.

“But if you don’t make mistakes, you don’t improve. If you always play the same way, you will get the same things. If you don’t want to develop, you will never get anywhere. You will always be the same – boring for a long time.”

Celtic manager Ronny Deila finally loses his cool ahead of Group D game in the Europa League and insists that his emphasis on diet and fitness is justified

The pent-up frustration of three months caught up in what his boss called “a s— storm” poured out of Ronny Deila ahead of tonight’s Europa League tie against Dinamo Zagreb. Irritated by those – and there are many, including some within his squad – who have questioned his emphasis on diet and athleticism and endlessly varied team selections, Deila dropped his cool and polite Scandinavian manner in a scornful rebuke to his detractors.

Asked if he felt that a young Scottish coach would have been granted a softer passage, Deila said: “Yes, maybe – it’s hard to say – but if I want to get to the Champions League, you f—–g have to look at the Champions League and if you see the fitness in the Champions League it’s unbelievable – unbelievable!

“We have to look outside the country, not inside. If Van Gaal was coming in and saying all these things you would be sitting there nodding your heads – but I come from Norway and they are only good at skiing.

“I think Scottish football has gone [gestures down]. The national team in the Nineties was good. There were Scottish players playing in foreign leagues. Now it’s not the same and what you did in the Nineties is not happening now.

“If you went to Manchester City or Chelsea and saw the professionalism on display there I think you would be shocked. I really think the Scottish players are open to new things.

“Most of the things are not so new, they knew about them already but are we talking Scotland or are we talking Europe? To win in Scotland, we can do the same things as before but if you tell me that a player can be three or four kilos too heavy and play against Ronaldo, then good luck.

“I get irritated discussing it. You have to understand that the fitness is unbelievable out there. If you see Gareth Bale, that’s Champions League level. So are we not going to try and adapt to that?”

Deila summoned the success of a Scottish sporting icon to his cause when he added: “Do you think Andy Murray eats chips? For Andy Murray to win Wimbledon, he did something different to what he did four or five years before. He looks much sharper, much fitter, and if you ask him about that, you will get good answers.

“It’s the same for my players. They are playing for Celtic, the best club in Scotland and we are going to compete in the Champions League. You have to make sacrifices for that.

“I hope the players question things. We have arguments about a lot of things, but it’s about understanding and talking. People have choices but Celtic is going one way and that is upwards. We are going to develop.

“If you are going to be into it, you have to make changes yourself. I have to adapt, I have to be a better manager than I was in Norway. I have to learn new things, sacrifice things that I would have done in Norway. If Celtic or Scotland are not ready for that, then I will go back to Norway. It’s no problem.”

That said, Deila acknowledged the difficulty of blending change with the requirement, at a club of Celtic’s currently unchallenged status in Scotland, to post significant results. However, he was certainly not shy of setting himself targets – yesterday he declared again that the aim was to win all the Scottish honours and amass 10 points in Group D of the Europa League – but tonight is a crucial test of his credibility.

With a point in the bank from their 2-2 draw with Salzburg in Austria, three home wins would take Celtic to the likely qualifying total. For that process to begin tonight, though, Deila will have to steer his players to a third successive competitive victory for the first time this season and he is presented with yet another selection difficulty.

John Guidetti – who scored his first goal for Celtic against Hearts last week and claimed a double in the 2-1 win away to St Mirren on Saturday – is ineligible for this tournament. He could be replaced by Anthony Stokes, but that would mean taking a chance on a striker who has not scored in 19 European ties since his two goals against Rennes in the Europa League three years ago.

Stefan Scepovic has yet to display the physical presence to discomfit opponents, which leaves Wakaso Mubarak – who scored in Austria – as the man most likely to start, but with whom? Kris Commons looks likely to be fit after tearing a muscle in his buttock but has not been prominent in Deila’s European selections.

Leigh Griffiths has been an almost wholly marginal figure, yet the manager hinted that the forward might have a role to play tonight.

“He can be part of the game tomorrow. He’s in the squad, so we’ll see,” said Deila. “He’s a good football player and he scores goals, but I know he can be much sharper and stay on top of his game for 90 minutes. Once he has that then he’ll be so much better.”

As for Deila himself, he finished his candid preview on another defiantly upbeat note when he said: “I have really enjoyed the job and I am looking forward to every match.

“I am going to win things – that’s why I am here.”

  21. Scott Brown: Celtic have duty to succeed in Europe

    by STEPHEN HALLIDAY

BEING a flag bearer for Scottish football in Europe can be a lonely and unforgiving responsibility.

It is a role Celtic have carried out by themselves in reaching the group stage of the Champions League or Europa League in each of the past four years, while the rest of Scotland’s participants have been routinely and often ignominiously eliminated in the qualifying rounds.

So amid the steady diminishment of the country’s standing in European football, Celtic captain Scott Brown admits he feels a wider sense of duty to try to drive his team on to a significant and successful run in the Europa League this season.

“Everyone is trying to put Scottish football down so we have to be the backbone of Scotland and try and keep things going,” said Brown as he looked forward to tonight’s Group D fixture against Dinamo Zagreb at Celtic Park.

The tournament may be widely regarded as a poor relation to the Champions League, which Celtic missed out on by losing to Maribor in the play-off round, but Brown insists he and his team-mates will lack nothing in motivation as they try to emulate their predecessors who memorably reached the final of what was then the Uefa Cup in 2003.

“We need to try and look forward to this campaign,” he added. “One of the best seasons in the club’s history was in this competition.

“So it’s still a huge game for us, it’s Europe at the end of the day. We want to play against the best and, at this stage, this is the best we can face. We want to try and improve and go as far as we can in the tournament.”

Bolstered by their 2-2 draw against top seeds Red Bull Salzburg in Austria on matchday one two weeks ago, Celtic are keen to build on that result by re-establishing a run of home victories in Europe.

Brown is hopeful the Europa League can prove as beneficial to Ronny Deila’s development as Celtic manager as it was for Neil Lennon when his team emerged with credit from a group including Atletico Madrid, Rennes and Udinese in 2011.

“I don’t see why not,” said Brown. “We had some good results away from home as well as in Glasgow that season. That kind of kicked off us doing better away from home, which had been a problem in the past.

“But we have to start getting things going at home as well. We have to kick on and really get the fans behind us to try and get as much support as possible.

“We need to try and get back into that winning mentality. I think we went a season or two in Europe where we pretty much cleaned up at Celtic Park – and that was with teams like AC Milan coming here.

“It shows that we can do it. If we all put our heads together, start playing and show that we have the right attitude then we can definitely do it again. There is a great bunch of lads in the dressing room and we all want to work towards that. You can’t beat a European night at Celtic Park and we are all looking forward to it.

“We did really well over in Salzburg. They are the best pressing team I’ve ever faced, so to get a draw over there shows you we are moving forward and getting better. We defended well as a team and managed to create chances as well.

“We could have scored more goals on another night, although Craig Gordon was outrageous at the other end with some of his saves. But we are trying to improve and it’s looking good. It’s coming together for us.

“We’ve watched videos of Dinamo Zagreb this week and it is going to be hard. They are a good physical team who want to play football, so it should be a good game. They play a 4-3-3 and pass the ball, but they are also strong and fit and will want to get into our faces. But we’ve got good players in our dressing room who will want to do the same to them.”

Celtic will give a late fitness check to Serbian striker Stefan Scepovic, who is in line to replace the ineligible John Guidetti up front, but have already been boosted by the news that playmaker Kris Commons is able to return after missing Saturday’s Premiership win at St Mirren with a strained gluteal muscle. Jason Denayer will also be back to partner Virgil van Dijk in central defence.

Manager Deila senses a more positive mood among his players than there was before some of their earlier European fixtures this season.

“I think the mood is better than it has been,” said Deila. “We have had a good start to the Europa League and have had some good performances recently.

“We are looking forward to the game. I think it is a big test for us. We are going to play a good team at Celtic Park. I am really looking forward to it, the same as the players.

“I think Dinamo’s level is equal to Celtic and is quite similar to Salzburg. They are a good team and we have to be at our best to win the game.

“If you don’t believe, then you have no chance. So that is unbelievably important. We believe we can beat Zagreb. I know that. In the training we focus on it. There has been a good attitude and I can see that the boys are looking forward to the game.

“It is very hard for me to say if there was a lack of belief earlier in the season. I came straight into it. I felt that of course the players wanted it and had the heart to do it. But we weren’t good enough. That is how we have to see it. That is why it is very important to play in Europe, to see what level we are at. To test ourselves against the teams that we want to play against, hopefully next year as well.”

l Celtic are 11/10 favourites to get their first win in the Europa League, when they meet Dinamo Zagreb at Celtic Park tonight.

Scottish bookmakers, McBookie.com, also offer 8-11 that Celtic will qualify for the knock-out stages.

Paul Petrie, McBookie.com spokesman said: “With Salzburg red hot 1-6 favourites to qualify, it looks a straight fight between Celtic and Zagreb for the other spot, so this is a must win game for Celtic.”
