European football disinformation

657

I’m hoping suggestions Stefan Scepovic and Kris Commons are struggling for fitness for Thursday is a classic attempt at European football disinformation.

Back in July I wrote about Commons “dependence on one creative talent feels like an unnecessary vulnerability”.  We remain (unnecessarily) dependent on our only creative talent, as subsequent games without him have established.  If he’s not in the starting line-up, we’ll need a radical change of system.

Bringing a second creative talent to the club should be a priority.  On this subject, I hear Bosnian fulcrum, Semir Stilic, who we were reportedly interested in a few years ago, before he detoured for a indifferent spell in Turkey, is now back in Poland with Wisla Krakow and eclipsing his earlier form for Lech Poznan.  We could do worse.

Shocked and stunned at the news Rangers International’s nomad, Daniel Stewart Securities PLC, have had trading in their shares suspended by the Stock Exchange as they were unable to file their accounts to year-end 31 March 2014 on time.  The Ibrox club’s board will be incredulous that the diligence they carried out to ensure they were dealing with an advisor of standing overlooked some fundamentals.

Four days out from the Great Scottish Run, which I’m doing for the Foundation’s work for Health, Equality, Learning and Poverty.  This is our Foundation, established and run by Celtic fans for 19 years.  It’s an important part of the story of where our club came from and what’s important to our mission.  Any donations here, from £1 up, are welcome.

Thanks to everyone who has helped.

Rony talks a good game and he makes a lot of sense it will be a sad day for our club if he does not succeed he wants players to behave like athletes to eat drink and rest properly and to train his way.The total change in culture will not happen over night he needs time.If he fails it will be back to the old ways half day training off to the bookies then the pub and eat what you like so im backing Rony . 14. Fresh twist in Rangers ownership row

    Custom byline text: MARTIN WILLIAMS

The latest twist in Rangers’ troubles came as a client of BNP Paribas Arbitrage SNC, the asset management wing of France’s largest bank, became one of the club’s big six shareholders by taking a 5.23 per cent stake.

    Loading article content

The anonymous buyer has purchased 4.265 million shares sold by London-based investment managers Hargreave Hale.

It came on the day fans accused the Rangers board of being “incompetent” after it emerged certificates signed by former chief executive Charles Green and director Brian Stockbridge had been sent to shareholders involved in the recent open offer.

Union of Fans spokesman Chris Graham said: “It does not come as a huge surprise that this has not been done properly along with pretty much every other piece of governance within the club.”

The legal action by Worthington Group, which has been connected to Whyte, appeared to disappear when the Financial Conduct Authority suspended trading in its shares at the company’s request over a year ago.

But the ban was lifted over four weeks ago and now its chief executive Doug Ware has confirmed that the Rangers court case is back on the agenda.

It comes one year after auditors Deloitte flagged up the legal battle over ownership, saying it was a key uncertainty hanging over the Ibrox business. Rangers have consistently said Whyte’s claims have no merit.

The case revolves around Whyte’s allegations that Mr Green had acted as a “front man” for him to take control of the club – through the Sevco 5088 consortium that bought the liquidated assets of Rangers oldco RFC 2012 plc. Last year it emerged Worthington Group had 26 per cent of Law Financial Ltd, then one of Mr Whyte’s companies and one which claims to have Sevco 5088 as one of its subsidiaries.

Included among Law Financial’s assets was the legal action instigated by Whyte against Mr Green for the claim on Rangers’ assets.

Mr Ware said yesterday: “Rangers litigation is a small and reducing part of our rapidly expanding investment portfolio.

“That said, the litigation will take its course and we’ll have to see where it ends up, it’s not on top of my agenda.”

On Tuesday Whyte was barred from being a company director in the UK for 15 years. He has always insisted he was the main driver behind Sevco 5088.

Rangers assets were bought for £5.5 million in June 2012 and were transferred to a different company called Sevco Scotland, which then became The Rangers Football Club.

Whyte’s main argument is that the transfer was illegal and Sevco 5088 remained the rightful owner of the club’s assets.

Rangers said last night that their position remains the same as in May last year when it said it was preparing a “robust response” and that as legal proceedings were threatened it would not be appropriate to make public any further.

Mr Green has always denied he had ever been a “front man” for Mr Whyte.

End of an era as Murray closes illustrious Charlotte Square HQ

    Simon Bain

    Business Correspondent/Personal Finance Editor

    Thursday 2 October 2014

FORMER Rangers owner Sir David Murray’s 30-year business empire has shut its headquarters in one of Edinburgh’s most prestigious addresses prior to being wound up with debts of more than £300 million.

SIR DAVID MURRAY: Said there would be few remaining creditors.

Murray International Holdings (MIH) has left the Georgian office building in Charlotte Square, where it built a conglomerate backed by £900m of borrowings from Bank of Scotland before the credit crunch.

The closure follows the sale last month of its last major subsidiary, the call centre business Response.

The Glasgow-based call firm was severely hit by the loss of a major sales and support contract with Sky, which 950 people worked on, in 2012. Response employed 1,200 of the 2,000 people at MIH firms before the sale. Sir David said 95 per cent of jobs at MIH companies had been kept on.

The Murray nameplate lives on in Charlotte Square, however, in the shape of Murray Capital, the biggest company in Sir David’s private family empire after acquiring many of MIH’s assets.

The businessman said: “We are in the final throes of getting it sorted with the bank’s support and there will be very few if any major creditors at all. The most important thing is we have preserved 95 per cent of the jobs in all the companies that have moved on.

“All the various entities are now managed individually, and the focus has shifted to private interests. Murray Capital and all the family interests will be maintained from its office, which happens to be in Charlotte Square.”

On whether the debt to the Bank of Scotland was still close to the £351m disclosed in the last accounts, Sir David said: “We will find out.

There will be a writedown for everybody, shareholders’ funds as well as the bank. It will not be a positive result for anybody other than the important thing, which is the preservation of jobs, which was crucial for the bank.”

At its peak the bank debt stood at about £900m, Sir David said last year. It was reduced by £23m in the year to June 2013.

The Response sale followed a string of disposals over the previous two years, many of them to Sir David’s private companies in “arm’s-length” transactions. Biggest among them was the unpublicised sale of the group’s original steels business in May 2012 for £14m, to a management buy-out backed by Sir David’s family interests.

Murray Capital, the family empire’s biggest private company run by his son, also named David, paid MIH £14m for Murray Estates, which owns 800 acres of potential housing land in the Central Belt.

Premier Property, the subsidiary that ran up much of the debt, has also vacated its office in Charlotte Square. It has recouped about £300m from sales over the past three years. Sir David, who sold Rangers in 2011 to Craig Whyte for £1, added: “Many of the properties were 60-40 or 50-50 ventures with the bank, it was a workout process we have done together.”

He expected the remaining assets would be disposed of by the end of the year, leaving MIH as a shell.

Sir David said reports in May of a £22m black hole in the MIH pension scheme were alarmist.

“We are putting £3.6m into the group pension scheme and we believe that should be sufficient to give benefits in excess of the Pension Protection Fund,” he said.

    MIH made a £24.9m pre-tax loss on turnover of £85.6m in 2012-13.

Writing in the last published accounts Sir David highlighted the asset disposals and debt reduction as a “significant and a very credible performance” in a difficult market.

However the board and shareholders admitted bank indebtedness and the pension liability cast “significant doubt upon the company’s ability to continue as a going concern”.

    Philvis,

Ronny made a lot of mistakes in his European qualifiers.

I agree that team selections have been confusing but its all geared around winning the treble and qualifying for Europe after Christmas.

I’d like to think Ronny has looked at the league and thought I can afford to drop about 10 points on last season. On that basis 5 league draws around our Europa League games isn’t a disaster. We have just managed to get past St Mirren but drew against Motherwell so we are above that target. Sundays game v Hamilton will see less players rested than Morherwell but we will still bring in Guidetti plus 1 or two others.

I don’t have an issue with that but I do think Ronnys rigid approach to this 4 mation handicaps us.

I criticised him for changing too much too soon. Disregarding the small amount of income from the champions league ( tongue in place). .. I think our current position is the best to build from.

I also believe Ronny has made some good points in his vociferous retort re arguing with players and chips. I get the impression he’s not running a democracy.
