Exploiting a vulnerable man, the drive to Bristol Airport, WW in the UK

611

There is a degree of public interest in reading about, or listening to, spivs exploit the stupidity of some football fans to bring a club to its knees, but the sight of a tired and emotional looking Malcolm Murray stumbling away from an event is neither entertaining nor of interest to anyone with a sense of humanity.

Have you ever seen a drunk football player or official?  I have.  It has never been news before nor should it be now.  If the man has an actual problem the first response from his club and the wider game must be to offer support for one of our national illnesses.

The fan with a phone camera probably knows no better, but passing-round a recording of when a Frankie Howerd impersonator confronted Murray about his alleged problem is truly awful.

The audio was almost certainly not uploaded onto the internet by ‘Howerd’ but it was his decision to make and distribute the recording.  I hope he informed Murray the call was being recorded.

10 years ago today five of us filled a car and drove to Bristol Airport, the nearest available departure point for Scot’s leaving for the Spain; more-local airports were booked out within minutes of the event ahead being confirmed.  Bristol is a small airport but the place was full of other Celtic fans who had travelled south for the same purpose.  Every departure point in the land was filled by green and white.

A remarkable exodus was underway, it was a privilege to be part of it.

Great news, Willie Wallace has made the long trip from Aus and is now in the UK.  Looking forward to catching up with him next week.

I see contributing to Willie’s autobiography has had a dramatic effect on Rod Stewart’s career!  He’s just reached No. 1 in the album chart for the first time in decades.  Hail, hail, Rod.

You can pre-order the autobiography in Willie’s own words, with Rod’s contribution, Brogan Rogan’s best writing yet, and Archie MacPherson’s fantastic scene setting (“the best team I’ve ever seen”) with the link below.  Willie will be signing all copies ordered now just as soon as the presses roll.

Nostalgia overload.  Need to hold it together for tomorrow.

  1. If the SFA are waiting fo the inquiry at Ibrox to finish then there can be only one possible outcome.

And that is a 3 match ban for Neil Lennon

  2. @O.G.Rafferty 16:09

    was thinking the same.

I was sure that someone on FF ‘leaked’ the news that the enquiry had been completed a couple of weeks ago and that The Rangers were innocent (again)

Then a couple of leaked audio tapes & Charlotte emerged, all of a sudden it went quiet.

A real dilemma on the 6th floor now – they must assume the worst, that the 5 way agreement is being caressed by Charlotte as we speak and prepare a response with that in mind without giving too much away, because it may just be the only document from the last 3 years that isn’t available *cough*

I was looking for some info regarding helicopter trips over the Grand Canyon and Hoover dam. Whether to book it in advance or not and to see if anyone would recommend any particular trip/company.

    Thanks.

    ~SPF~

    —————————————–

I can’t recommend a company but I can recommend that you fly later in the day about 6pm. Earlier flights can be subject to quite strong ‘thermals’ which can cause the aircraft to bounce about quite a bit. If you are not a confident flyer this can be a bit unnerving and does have the effect of causing what can be politely termed as an emesis. Take the bus to Hoover Dam, normally booked through your hotel, well worth the visit as you can go “inside”. You can also walk across from one time zone to another, Nevada – Arizona, as it is on the border of these two states.

Ah Bristol, stopping off point to Seville via Malaga…

Great memories Paul, I also got to Seville via Bristol. I travelled by Easyjet to Bristol with only the one ticket from our 3 season tickets and then on to Malaga to join my brother, his wife and godson at a hotel in Belamadena, which was fully packed with Celtic support, mostly Irish and what an atmosphere, Seville even better !

On the way back I spent the day in Malaga and the Saturday in Bristol with friends. We had a hillwalk round Bristol pubs before a lovely meal and headed up just in time to catch the Sunday match. My own two bhoys were too young to go !!!!, only one ticket mind ,.and they have not spoken to me since, only joking they text me and send me threatening e-mails.

Cant believe its 10 years……need to go again, might take the bhoys this time !

    BOBBY MURDOCH’S CURLED-UP WINKLEPICKERS

I have said from the start him and Donkey were hand picked to do a job, this has been years in the planning.

They both landed their jobs from nowhere it seems, the only thing I hop[e and pray is that Murray Ogilvie the banks and their cohorts never bargained on Green &whytes backstabbing greed and ruthlessness to make as much money as possible bringing our best hope in years The SERIOUS FRAUD OFFICE into the charade.

Ibrox is IMHO a “Crime scene” that in days gone by would have been cleansed by the brown brogue brothers.

But Greed and Internet bampotery has hopefully brought others to the game.

Its ok to say move along nothing to see here when all you have to deal with is fans and mostly compliant chairmen its another when you could go to jail for aiding and abetting criminals through turning a blind eye.

Today I thought Regan looked a despeately worried man :))

    Again all IMHO

Scotpatsfan: It depends how long you are there and how far out you want to travel. As mentioned Hoover Dam is a must. There are helicopter trips to the GRand Canyon which are fantastic but expensive. Death Valley is a bit of a hike but stunning and worth seeing, although Red Rocks is closer to Las Vegas and well worth a visit. If you can get to Utah it is out of this world, but weird. Bryce Canyon and Zion (as mentioned) are both outstanding places to visit.

Within Las Vegas the Bellagio water show is excellent and it’s a hoot just wandering round all the hotels. Caesars Palace has a shopping mall where the light changes to give the impression of day and night and at one point in the mall there is a bizarre water show.

Las Vegas is really just a big theme park. For a bizarre experience go the The Gun Store on Tropicana Avenue where you can hire real guns with live ammunition. Only in America!!

Another nice drive out of Las Vegas is up to Mount Washington. I found that after a couple of days in Las Vegas you just had to get out as the place really does become a bit much.

    Hope that helps

George raises an interesting point or ten…

I’m currently on holiday in Longboat Key, Florida.

Talking to the lady at reception one morning and a young couple came up to the desk.

Receptionist to me “these folks are English too” indicating the youngsters.

Young Englishman (who had heard me speak) said.

“Oh he’s Scottish, he hates us cos we’re English.”

This from people I had never met, didn’t know existed, even their nationality.

They were from Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire and both managed to look intimidated as he spoke.

I spent a few minutes chatting to them to try and allay any sense of fear they harboured.

Is it just years of Wembley weekends that did this, or was it our dislike of Thatcher, or indifference to Diana & the rest of the royal soap opera?

The man actually thought I hated him because he was English.

How typical is he and his wife I wonder.

With regards to Spurs. I remember a friendly with them at CP just after the Falklands/Malvinas conflict. Ozzie Ardiles was playing and also Alan Brazil, both of whom got a great reception from the Celtic fans.

I was in the main stand that night next to the Rangers End. Behind me were seated about one hundred Spurs fans. They had a Union Flag which they waved at the Jungle throughout the first half and kept up a chant of “Catholic Muppets” for a lengthy period. They were warned a few times by the police about their conduct but when the Jungle started to empty into the Rangers End and make their way towards the Main Stand to get a better look at these so-called supporters and to discuss the matter further with them outside at the end of the game, the police decided to escort them all from the premises.

My one and only encounter with fans of THFC. I hope it will be my last and I always hope that they lose whatever game they play.

(Long suffering in that for a month she doesn’t get woken up every morning with a cup of tea ‘n a biscuit – toast if there’s nae biscuits!)

Anyway – seems like she’s the jinx – got her to go to every County Caley game this season – after she swore she’d never go to another game after her first – the Scottish cup final against Dundee United.

This my first season as an adult season ticket holder. Everything before being a young single man’s game.

And now I can’t remember what I started typing to say…….Except!!!!

Yesterday in Dingwall was a celebration – I couldn’t join in the major after-game celebrations because of my commitments to leave for Africa this morning – but hi!!!

Was my double-seat season ticket purchase when Roy said “No to Newco” worth it?

Damn right it it was – and today filled me with enough enthusiasm that ah’m booking the same two seats for next year, (two seats the same price as one for Celtic Park byrraway – but ah’ll be visiting again next season…..).

Anyway – coming over as I type – even I can see that with the drams – as a complete tosser..,

We know the SFA work on the principle that ignorance and wilful neglect of the rules, where Rangers were concerned, was a technicality that produced no sporting advantage and was therefore irrelevant.

    What’ll be different now?

Did the SFA agree some financial input in the so-called independent investigation?

  29. Next time Neil Lennon gets send to the stands Celtic should tell the SFA to hang fire on the touchline ban, we’ll conduct an internal investigation and get back to you with the results.
