FA Prem goes international below Uefa radar

793

The existence of the Premier League International Cup, a tournament for under-21s, which the FA Premier League launched this is a fascinating development.  It’s a toe in the water for the Premier League who are running a multi-nation tournament out-with the auspices of Uefa.  A consequence of excluding the European governing body is that all games must be played in the territory of England and Wales, despite Celtic and seven others of the 16 teams residing outside that region.

Uefa retain exclusive rights to hold tournaments across multiple territories, although this definition accommodates the existence of the Welsh FA and Welsh teams participation in competitions run by the English FA.

The Premier League has a broken business model which they have been unable to resolve for a decade of more, as they hae studiously avoided growth in their key TV revenue stream stalling.  When it does, innovative solutions will be required.

As far as Celtic are concerned, I’m delighted we’re there.  In the absence of NextGen this will be a valuable addition to the youth players’ development this season.

Foundation News:

I’m up for the Zip Slide from the top of the Jock Stein Stand to pitch level in front of the Lisbon Lions’.  Never done anything as ridiculous in my life but it’s a one-off opportunity for a fee of £30 plus a commitment to raise £125 for the Foundation.

Pile in here, if you’re brave enough for the Celtic Park pitch…………

Not had more than a glance at the annual report yet. Statements dated 12 September? Hmmm.

    Go with the flow ;))))

University students are being urged to urinate in the shower in a bid to save water.

The Go with the Flow campaign is the brainchild of students Debs Torr and Chris Dobson, from the University of East Anglia (UEA) in Norwich.

They want the university’s 15,000 students to take their first wee of the day while having their morning shower.

Mr Dobson, 20, said the idea could “save enough water to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool 26 times”.

The pair want those taking part to pledge their allegiance on Facebook and Twitter and have offered gift vouchers to the first people to join the challenge.

  2. My friends in Celtic,

In my opinion all talk about KPI’s is a smokescreen and is not really applicable to the average fan.

We operate in an environment that has lost not one but three of its biggest attractions. Ask yourself does that make it harder to flourish and progress in the big picture. ?

If we are to equate a KPI to CQN then maybe we should look at the amount on here that can support but chose not to.

For many, and this is not a criticism, the only criteria for progress they attach to Celtic is what they see on TV. ( And of course we can and should be doing better ) but again they do not see the whole picture. The improvement in facilities for the disabled, the improvements in the infrastructure, the work of the Celtic foundation etc. Television does not show that.

Reminiscing about the past is great, however its what we can do now to support that should be to the fore.

perhaps we’re talking at cross purposes here. A couple of weeks ago when I booked a wee break to Spain, that local expert (The Exiled Tim) dampened my excitement by saying that bad weather was forecast for the week I was there. In fact, sunburn was on the cards!

Only downside was the fantastic bed we slept in in the hotel. Which has led to Mrs Baldie announcing that we’re just about to tour various Central Scotland bed shops for a new one…

  4. Jobo, we are, Im talking about local weather here and you in Spain, sorry I watched the forecast last night and assuned:-)

  9. BRTH Thanks for that, give my regards to Raymond ,was well looked after. Ask him if he followed up on the Black Pudding deal. You will have seen my reasons for my now in frequent attendance at the games, the whole thing has lost it;s appeal both off and on the park. Our section is like a Ghost town , there will have to be big changes if they are to stop more people drifting away. I’ll end on a positive note ,going to Dingwall tomorrow where hopefully the good ship Celtic will return to winning ways. Hail Hail Hebcelt

  10. £79 to fly to belfast… Jeez. Id only pay that if it was a stop over on the way to lovely Derry :-)

Belfast a grand spot… Highly recommend the roddy mccorley club to anyone who hasnt been. Great museum in it.

  11. Before we get all misty eyed about the splendours of the pre-plc past of Celtic FC,maybe we should remind ourselves of what we tolerated back then.

At the time we were a well supported club, probably less successful than Rangers post war, but we had a loyal hard core of 20k to 30k regular supporters and could summon 70k to 100k for a special occasion like a cup final. Our fan base vis-a-vis Rangers changed because of our 9iar achievements under Jock. That magic era chained hundreds of thousands of Celts and their descendants into the worldwide fan base it is now.

But we played in an era where our crowds were comparable with most big English clubs and when players could not be tempted away unless you were willing to sell them. Despite all our advantages and our fame, we paid our players a basic wage that was less than Rangers paid and was half what English clubs would pay our players. John Hughes told us that he doubled his salary when he was transferred to Crystal Palace against his wishes; he was in fact offered 4 times his Celtic wage to stay with them when he left a couple of seasons later.

Davie Hay tells the same story i.e. that he was reluctant to leave but still made more money by leaving than by staying. Back then, we had exactly the situation we are decrying now i.e. we DID not pay enough to retain our best.

In my opinion, back then, we could have afforded to pay more but did not do so. Now, we are calling for boycotts for this heinous offence when I would argue that we can no longer clearly afford to do so because the market is so distorted by Big League money and TV exposure issues. We operate in a post-Bosman, TV sponsor money, Big League dominance era which is concentrating and distilling wealth and power in football and we are one of the many clubs outside that wealth bubble.

In the past 10 to 15 years the teams that had a fighting chance in European competition in the 60s 70s and 80s like Celtic, Anderlecht, Ajax, Benfica, Sparta Prague, Legia etc; will find it near impossible to win a big trophy again such is the imbalanced wealth.

Yes, we managed to keep Henrik for one more contract than he would otherwise have stayed for, and we managed to persuade Stan and Aiden to earn us big money in transfers. But for most of the 90s, noughties and now in the teens, any player who is showing promise will be tempted away.

Of course, if we paid a bit more we could have kept Sammi and will maybe keep Kris Commons but their suitors are unlikely to be of the calibre of the guys chasing Gary Hooper, Victor Wanyama or Virgil Van Dijk and all of those guys were determined to go. They were not chased or did not leave because they were unloved.

So the question remains, why boycott now when we stayed loyal then? Why boycott a club which has to sell players who are desperate to leave or past-it players they cannot afford to pay in their declining years when we remained loyal to a club that tried to sell McGrory, punted Wallace, Hughes, Johnstone, Murdoch & Hay and others against their wishes, and who did not pay enough to keep Dalglish or Macari etc?

P.S. I am only referencing the “quality of football” argument here and the plc structure argument.

Like many Celts, I am inclined to boycott over the fan treatment issue and over the handling of the 2012 Rangers’ Death fiasco but that is not the argument I see advanced by most as their reason for dissatisfaction.

P.P.S. It has b**gg** all to do with the 55% issue either. Many of those who are adamant about our position re the Club’s presentation of issues on any eventual Ibrox club making it into the top division were No voters. And many of those waiting on an Ibrox club to bring an edge before they re-appear at CP were Yes voters.

    Fan based ownership?

Pondering mind, not demanding or even calling for:-)

We have achieved well at times over the last 15 years, we have also failed, and I don’t really mean on the pitch. It is the off field issues that I see as the real problems.

But BRTH’s arguement has lots of merit. The PLC is a cumbersome vehicle that rarely moves or reactes quickly. That is a hinderance to a football club.

Can someone tell me when the halcyon days of supporters and the board connecting were ? As someone who has supported and gone to games for over 45 years I can’t remember such a time. I’m not going to deny that people are pissed off with the board, but I don’t go to support the board or the PLC, that is an irrelevance of supporting the team. Lawwell’s salary is what it is, it compares with other CEO’s of similar sized clubs. He’s probably paid less than Derk sicknote.

The falling crowds will flock back next year if der huns are promoted and big Pete will get another bonus. Same as it ever was…

  18. For all our PLC has it’s probs, I would rather have our current mob than the likes of minty, and the spivs that are in house over the other side of the city.

Still, they need to engage with the support more, or they won’t have much left to engage with, then the possibility of DD selling out becomes more likely.

They are in a catch 22 sort of, one certain way to get the fans back onside is to put a team on the park the fans want to watch.

Simples really, we are a football club first and foremost, sort that and PL can take bonuses to beat the band.

Then sort the referees and the sfa and everything will be A Ok.

I don’t think it’s accurate to say that Lou Macari had the measure of Walturd or would have done better than Tommy Burns.

Macari managed us twice v Rangers losing 2-4 at Celtic Park and drawing 1-1 at Mordor in the lock out game. Frank Connor was caretaker manager when we won 2-1 at Mordor.

He got us put out of the Scottish cup at the first time of asking.

Macari brought in a shedload of his mates onto the coaching staff – Ashley Grimes, Chic Bates and some guy called Taylor. None of them went onto achieve anything in coaching or management.

Tommy Burns went with one assistant coach, Billy Stark, rather than flood the place with his mates.

I share your concern at some of the decisions taken by our board but I really don’t think you can blame Fergus McCann for showing Macari the door. It was fully justified on the grounds of-

    Results achieved by Macari

Signings made by Macari (biggins whittle)

    Macari commuting from Stoke

Insubordination (Macari not reporting for duty at start of 94/95. Swanning about the USA instead).

Tommy Burns fought a good fight for us with integrity and dignity. He built an entertaining if defensively lightweight team. He was let down by the mercenary antics of van Hooijdonk and di Canio’s lack of discipline. And he was up against MIBS in overdrive – see tosh mckinlay’s laughable red card at Mordor in autumn 96. Willie Young at his worst.

Tommy Burns trumps Lou Macari every time for me.

  24. I am sure PL is A Celtic supporter . I am sure Dermot Desmond is also. If Dermot paid Peter 1 million he must be pleased with his own investment. Meanwhile other Celtic employees are paid wages that won’t give them a standard of life most expect. 2,500 season tickets go towards one mans wages. What else goes into the board and orange shareholders salaries. Far too much for doing a Job you should be privileged to do. Something is not right. Peter you may well be worth your coin in the market but CFC is not the market. How about using that bonus to pay a living wage to your people.

The argument put forward by PL’s many defenders on here is that if you cut the CEO salary then you will attract a lesser CEO who won’t be able to deliver lucrative income streams into the club.

But I can’t see the lucrative deals that PL is delivering to justify his salary. The kit sponsor Nike is severing its ties at the end of the season. Rumour is they will be replaced by New Balance. Is this an example of CEO’s brilliance delivering a better deal for Celtic or is it more the case that Nike bought into the idea of joining with Celtic in 2005 as Seville showed the lucrative possibilities re replica sales and exposure and an EL team playing to sub 30000 crowds no longer fits the bill for them?

What revenues do we get from new media? People on here are forever complaining about the reliability of Celtic TV for example.

Who are our principal sponsors? Magners. Phoenix Honda, a local car franchise unknown outside of the West of Scotland. These are not loadsamoney deals.

Does it really take a £1 million CEO to secure these kind of deals?

I’m one of the people that has expressed that a lesser CEO is a possibility. That’s all it is, a possibility. However it comes back down to the fact that his salary is decided by a committee, and they’ve probably got a better handle on whether he’s pulling in good deals or not than anybody here.

  29. Brogan Rogan Trevino and Hogan supports Oscar Knox, MacKenzie Furniss and anyone else who fights Neuroblastoma on

Folks running out so a couple of brief points.

    1. People get het up about the Lawell salary and bonus.

In strict terms this is a red herring in my opinion as the level of salary is ok for the

turnover. The level of bonus and why it is awarded is a valid point of debate.

    2. Of greater concern is the lack of turnover in the non exec dept which smacks

of stagnation and cronism. Now I can understand why a company would want

to hang on to a really good and valuable non exec who contributes but there

should be fresh blood and fresh ideas every three years. That keeps a board

    room sharp.

    3. Ownership — in the modern world you are stuck with the necessity of company or

limited liability ownership from a legal perspective. You could look at a limited liability

partnership but the tax system makes a company nigh on inevitable.

Where you have a company you will have shareholders and investors as an

inevitability. This then means you are subject to the market and should be wary of

    spivs and so on.

So, if stuck with a PLC you then have to look at how it is managed and to whom it is

accountable. A management membership scheme is a possibility where membership

is subscribed for and then the board of management is then elected each year.

However, the election is based on one member one vote no matter how many shares

they have. To protect substantial investors such as Dermot D or even Fergus, then

basically there is a contractually agreed return between the management board

and the investors which is negotiated over a rolling period ( say 5 years ) and which

can be varied on a year to year basis as circumstances dictate.

Needless to say – in return for substantial investment above £x you get an automatic

nomination to the management board. Other members are elected.

    4. The above may well be too brief an explanation but it is a system designed to widen

the basis of the executive making board and function, promote inclusion of the

    fan base and so on.

    5. On a separate front, a CEO can focus on cash, finance, conservative funding and so

on or a CEO can be entrepreneurial, seek to expand non footballing revenue, can

choose to focus on increasing membership and social inclusion, improve PR or seek

to forge greater links with other companies, Government bodies, international

    contacts or whatever.

Different CEO’s have radically different visions and areas of interests while

    performing the same job.

    Anyway off to Drumchapel Hospital……….
