FA Prem goes international below Uefa radar

793

The existence of the Premier League International Cup, a tournament for under-21s, which the FA Premier League launched this is a fascinating development.  It’s a toe in the water for the Premier League who are running a multi-nation tournament out-with the auspices of Uefa.  A consequence of excluding the European governing body is that all games must be played in the territory of England and Wales, despite Celtic and seven others of the 16 teams residing outside that region.

Uefa retain exclusive rights to hold tournaments across multiple territories, although this definition accommodates the existence of the Welsh FA and Welsh teams participation in competitions run by the English FA.

The Premier League has a broken business model which they have been unable to resolve for a decade of more, as they hae studiously avoided growth in their key TV revenue stream stalling.  When it does, innovative solutions will be required.

As far as Celtic are concerned, I’m delighted we’re there.  In the absence of NextGen this will be a valuable addition to the youth players’ development this season.

Foundation News:

I’m up for the Zip Slide from the top of the Jock Stein Stand to pitch level in front of the Lisbon Lions’.  Never done anything as ridiculous in my life but it’s a one-off opportunity for a fee of £30 plus a commitment to raise £125 for the Foundation.

Pile in here, if you’re brave enough for the Celtic Park pitch…………

Not had more than a glance at the annual report yet. Statements dated 12 September? Hmmm.

Lawwell’s salary is what it is, it compares with other CEO’s of similar sized clubs. He’s probably paid less than Derk sicknote.

The falling crowds will flock back next year if der huns are promoted and big Pete will get another bonus. Same as it ever was…

    ——————————————————————————————————————

Ajax are not big payers and Derk would not have been amongst their highest earners. I’d be surprised if he’s on much more than £10k a week with us which is far less than the £25k a week Lawwell “earned” last year.

ST tickets sales were in sharp decline long before the old huns crashed and burned. The new huns may give a slight boost to ST sales next season but this remains to be seen especially if the board decide (as I think they will) to hike up ST prices next season. Also, much will depend on the plc response to the “Return of the Old Firm” as it will be portrayed by the laptop loyal and Sky. If the plc buys into the Big Lie then this will impact on ST sales. It will be far from the same as it was …

Well, it’s all about opinions, eh?

Consider the money TB(RIP) had to that of LM.

LM was going to make a decision that, had TB(RIP) made it then things might have been different.

LM was going to remove the utterly useless Peter Grant from midfield and replace him with a player that I thought was streets better – Gary Holt.

LM was going to make the clubs best and currently(at the time most saleable asset) Johnny Collins captain and, move the Maestro to a front sweeper position like B. Dortmunds Andy Moller or, if ye like Andreas Pirlo of today.

LM was on scouting duty at the WCF’s in USA 1994 looking for midfield enforcers as, LM said at the time Celtic were getting out-muscled in the midfield area.

The late TB(RIP) said that he wished he had 10 Peter Grants in the team and for me, at that point confirmed that he wisny going to make it as a manager.

Biggins was signed as a cue for the Celtic fans at that time to, get bhoycotting and stop f#cking about with styooopit meetings.

Macari didn’t move north coz, he knew Fergus had a dagger at the ready with LM’s name on it. LM was playing it cute – publicly backing the rebels and also saying the Kelly’s and White’s were Celtic men etc…knowing full well that he was operating in a city of daggers and quite a few might have had his name on them.

TB(RIP) had the best squad of Celtic players at his disposal since the Lisbon Lions – TKOK’s – apart and, could only beat the huns three times in fourteen games.

Give Macari the players TB(RIP) had and, LM would have stopped the huns. imho

    Take care, bye.

  3. Reading through the blog and seeing what people intend to do when ” New” Rangers return you can only arrive at one conclusion that in one way or another the femise of Rangers has been detrimental to Celtic. Many pepple with justification would argue that the way the Celtic board have reacted to their demise has brought problems to Celtic:s door but would all these people that no longer go to Celtic games or are going to cancel their sesson ticket

  4. It seems clear that most of us agree that the plc model is not suitable for Celtic. So, what should we do?

The only way to wrest control from DD and the other major shareholders is to buy them out. This would require a massive effort by a sufficiently large number of fans to commit to a fund over the long term to build the necessary capital. DD et al would need to be willing sellers. They cannot be forced into selling.

We can grumble on here till the cows come home, but nothing will happen unless some kind of fans’ buyout can be organised. Do we have that level of commitment? Is there sufficient expertise amongst the “committed” for this to be a realistic proposition?

The plc could become a private company run by an elected board who would appoint business/football professionals to run the club day to day. It’s a massive task.

IMO, if results on the park improve and we win a few trophies, the current high levels of dissatisfaction will wane. Most fans just want to see a decent team, playing entertaining football, and don’t care about ownership models blah blah.

No doubt that the remuneration committee has all the info on which to base their decisions re salaries. But are they infallible?

I’d say that that remuneration committee and indeed the wider board is overly dominated with people who have worked together previously eg Allison and Lawwell, Desmond and Reid on the biometric technology for passports etc for example.

Do any of the extensive past working relationships at play affect the judgements of individual committee members or the committee as a whole? I don’t know. I just find it strange that almost 50 per cent bonuses are justified when ticket sales are going south, when sponsors and hospitality patrons are withdrawn and when wastage costs in the playing pool are shooting up.

Maybe then yeez will see the true colors of the sharp suited sharks who manage your cash.

Anarchy / Rebellion / Not being took for mugs will end the reign of Thatchers children at Celtic Park.

FFS. Do you just make sh#t up to provoke discussion?

Macari was a Deila – inept, lost the dressing room early, bumbled about from duff result to duff result offering all sorts of excuses, trailing forlorn hope and fantasy. First time I ever saw folk in the jungle sitting on the steps through boredom/depression was the Macari era.

He had NO strategy for the future, NO emotional investment or even time investment in the club; re: his commute. Macari’s entire attitude, his comittment, to his Celtic employment could be summed up with a shrug of the shoulders and a ‘Meh.’

Fergus McCann saw through him in a glance, put TB in place – a man with Celtic in his blood. TB wa slet down by only one thing – loyalty to players. Particularly Brian O’Neill – falking on his arse to let Laudrup in for a crucial winner. TB gave too many second chances and too many players let him down very badly indeed.

He had assembled a squad well capable of taking out the rancoous heavily-loaded Ultra-Hun cheating squad, at their peak of corruption. But he stuck by players who were too much into a comfort zone with TB at the helm.

Don’t insult Fergus or Tommy by constructing some soap-opera drama around their relationship – no-one was more disappointed than them that ultimately they failed to deliver.

Their parting of the ways was done with great regret, not recrimination.

Don’t insult us by pretending Macari was some sort of Machiavellian genius thwarted by the evil McCann; he was a dud, full stop. Most of us saw that at the time. Nothing since proves otherwise. Your revisionism is Keevin-esque sleekitness.

Utter bunkum to introduce that issue. You’d be no less misdirected and unsubstantiated were you to reference breakfast cereal preferences.”

Er, I did not “introduce” it. I was directly responding to the defeated Jacobites who continually pour self-praise on themselves for being in the 45% and who were stating that it was the 55% who were waiting on Rangers” being in the top division.

You must have missed the jibe when it was not being directed at your group.

P.S. You are right in one respect. The voting preferences in the recent referendum have as much to do with this issue as breakfast cereal has.

I think people in general and not just football fans are more apathetic than they were 20 years ago.

They just bend over and take it, be it politicians on the make, bankers bonuses, sell off of Royal Mail on the cheap, further NHS privatisation, people have a wee moan but do nothing to resist or challenge.

Football fans are wired the same way now. You will never get another “celts for change” not even if the following happened-

    1. Celtic did not win the 14/15 SPFL

    2. Celtic did not qualify for European group stages in 15/16

    3. Dermot Desmond personally rolled out a welcoming red carpet for Sevco’s first appearance at Celtic Park saying “we missed you”

    4. Peter Lawwell got another £500,000 bonus this time next year

    5. Sevco won the 15/16 SPFL

Even if all these events came to pass there’d be no new “celts for change”. Just lots of moaning and counter stout defences of Desmond and Lawwell on blogs like this.

It’s the way people are now. Expect and accept the worst. Have no ambition or alternative vision. Either moan about it, or shrug and say “the rich and powerful know best, that’s why they’re rich and powerful” while the world keeps spinning round and nothing changes.

  12. The Battered Bunnet on

The governance and management structure of the club is considerably less important than its effectiveness.

Talk of whether a plc structure is more or less appropriate for Celtic than a CIC model or a Not-for-Profit Trust misses the point. It’s about good stewardship.

I was interested to listen to Leann Dempster being interviewed on Shortbread a couple of weeks ago. Hibs have recently completed a Supporter Consultation exercise, and one of the issues they encountered was that the views of the noisiest supporters frequently were at odds with the views of the majority of fans.

There may be a parallel here with the views of the largest shareholder and the majority of fans of Celtic, but her comments suggest that a ‘fan ownership’ model is likely to reduce very quickly to noisy factionalism. What then for Stewardship?

Hibs of course, are majority owned by Tom Farmer, the ‘benign owner’, and the 3 top issues that emerged from the Hibs survey (per Leann Dempster) were supporter representation on the board, improved communication between club and supporter, and a membership scheme.

Sound familiar? And this is poor old Hibs wallowing in the middle of mediocrity.

David Low recently fronted a bid to buy out Farmer (and Petrie who has 10%), and I’m sure David would vouch for the bona fides of his bid partners, but it benefits Hibs nought if the effectiveness of management and governance are unchanged under new owners. New Boss, same old Sh!t.

Celtic’s plc model is actually considerably more accessible for supporters at large than most other football club models I can think of, certainly of Celtic’s scale.

The issue at Celtic is not the fact that the plc’s shares are traded publicly, it’s the proportionate influence on decision making and direction of large shareholdings.

As the Hibs survey identified, there is a widespread frustration that supporters are detached from decision making. A sense of exclusion rather than belonging. Ring a bell? In Celtic’s case, this is despite there being 28,000 or so shareholding supporters.

The issue at Celtic boils down to the permissibility of a single shareholder (or small group) holding a disproportionate number of shares.

Reduce the maximum permissible shareholding and you immediately introduce both a driver for a more consensual approach, and increased accountability.

    In short…

The legal structure of the club is largely irrelevant to the quality of governance. Introduce a cap – say 10% – on the proportion of shares an individual may hold, combined with the pretty robust plc governance rules, and you transform the nature of influence and, most likely, engagement.

I must have missed the earlier association.

I can only conclude that we are both right.

  15. The nut of the problem with our club is the Targets set by DD and the board for PL. PL has total control with all that happens within our club

His targets are not CL qualification or bums on seats. If our profit was zero , but we had some star players ( remember them eh) and competed in CL then PL bonus would be limited.

It is PL personal interests that only profits and cash flow are the only targets he has

PL was brought into Celtic plc to stop rising costs , his whole career has been a cost reduction financial controller ( just google monktonhall coal mine and Peter lawell to see the mess he made there) we are now in a downward spiral on the football front directly because of his policies

Would a change of CEO with the same targets make a difference

I think yes due to PL history of being a zero investment financial controller

We are in danger now of losing a generation of fans ,

Boycott? Yes. But with diminishing crowds it might look like boycotts , but fans are just losing interest

If PL stays Virgil will be sold, Scott brown will not have his high wage contract removed and we will be left with loan signings and crowds will drop further

A few weeks ago we had our lowest competitive crowd since that night where” the rebels have won”

The German model would be my first argument to dispute her factionalism contention.

  18. I worked with a guy years ago.He was about 10 years older than me and was a home and away man never missed a game. Now this guy was fairly intelligent and knew a lot about the game having played in the juniors in his time. This guy would argue that Big Jock was a lucky manager that we fluked Lisbon against an under par Inter that Jinky only played when he felt like it Murdoch was a non trier Big Billy useless on the deck etc etc etc.

Other than that he was quite normal …………

  19. Stumbled upon this: http://swissramble.blogspot.co.uk/2013/08/championship-finances-201112-numbers.html (sorry cant get it to add as a hyperlink) which got me thinking about where Celtic would have been that year.

Celtic’s accounts for 2011/12 indicate that revenue was c£51m, whilst player wages were in the region of £33.5m. Celtic’s turnover does include revenue from a Europa League campaign that year, I expect this to be in the region of £5m profit, and c£1m TV money, which isn’t far off the c£4.5m Championship clubs recieve for TV and Premier League solidarity payments. So, for the sake of ease, I’m going to say £50m revenue and £33m wages (given Europa League bonuses will be included there – can’t imagine they would be substantial).

West Ham, newly relegated from the Premier League that year, had the highest revenue(including parachute payments of £16m) at £46m. The next highest was Birmingham City (£39m of which £16m parachute payments); followed by Leeds Utd £31m). Leeds being the only ones of the top 3 without parachute payments – and would be top if those were excluded. Of course, only West Ham were promoted that year (through the play offs) – Reading (c£20m of which £5m came from thier hotel) and Southampton (£25m) were also promoted that year. So revenue doesn’t tell us much about prospects of success, but clearly Celtic during that year would have generated more revenue than all the others, even allowing for parachute payments. Indeed, Celtic’s revenue was greater than that of the two clubs which were automatically promoted (Southampton and Reading) combined.

Again, as a newly relegated club, West Ham had the highest wage bill at £42m, followed by Southampton (£29m), Liecester City (£28m) and Reading (£27m). Celtic’s wage bill was c£33m during the same period – second only to West Ham, a club relegated but who kept most of thier players in the hope of going straight back up (which was a significant financial gamble – they made a £25m loss that year). Interestingly, 3 of those with the highest wage bill were promoted (only Liecester werent – finishing 9th). The top 3 (Reading, Southampton and West Ham) finished between 16 and 19 points clear of Birmingham City in fourth.

The point of this? During that season, Celtic were (financially) comparable to a top of the league Championship side – easily outstripping most of the other sides in that league. We can only speculate but, if it were true the offer was there for Celtic to join the Football League in the wake of ITV Digital’s collapse, we should have taken it. We’d have had a few comfortable seasons in the Championship to build a team to get promoted as soon as we could, but remaining financially stable. We’d have had our pick of players at that level – the Man Utd/Real Madrid of the league. We’d have been promoted and, by now, I would expect to be at an Everton level (unless, which i think entirely feasible, we’d been bought over by an Abramovich/Sheikh Mansour type figure – I certainly think we’d have been an attractive alternative to Man City had we been in that league).

Going forward, i know things have moved on, and finances (for us and Championship clubs) have changed a bit – I think the Premier League isn’t going to welcome us. But maybe the Football League would – I’d be looking at discussing it with them, particularly given that some clubs there are in financial difficulty (NL’s Bolton for one if you believe the press) – if and when a club goes bust, we should be ready to step in – leave our development team to play in the SPL. I’d sacrifice Champions League football in the short term, as the long term aim would be Premier League – with competitive games, and a good (Celtic) team on the park – I’m not saying it would be Champions League every week, but we’d be playing Champions League quality more often than we are now.

  24. Met a legendry Celtic fan this morning. This man who originally hails from Donegal is probably known to quite a few posters, he has travelled to Home & Away fixtures incl mid week fixtures for over 30 years (From Ireland). Has had articles written about him on National papers and is one of the most faithful through and through.

Asked him whether he was still travelling but he shook his head, confirmed he still has his season ticket but said he can’t bring himself to watch present side. He said he travelled to every game throughout the Huns 9 in a row but never felt so disillusioned by a Celtic side as he is at present. He has no confidence at all in Ronny and was totally negative about future prospects. Must say conversation left me totally depressed , I felt like I had been brainwashed by NegAnon, KevJ & PfAyr all at the one time.
