Fantastic result from Celtic Park

757

It was a fantastic result from Celtic Park last night for Scotland’s poor who are dependent on food aid.  Fans arrived in droves before kick off with bags full of provisions to restock food banks across the region.

I can sympathise with the SPFL to an extent.  Without a sponsor, they are even more dependent on satisfying television, and satisfying television often involves making unpopular decisions, but the mess they’ve made of scheduling the final Championship fixtures of the season is deeply embarrassing for our game.

Our game is looking more and more like it’s being run like a Banana Republic.  Generalissimo Doncaster has a case to answer.

I’m pretty sure no one at Celtic considered Leigh Griffiths as their number one striker when he signed a year ago.  That he has become so, is as much a result of his forward competition failing to deliver as much as his own talents, but there’s no denying Leigh’s ability.  He’s turned into a vibrant, productive striker who scores all types of goals.

    Re the TV deal…….

Would it not be simpler to call the BBC to account than it would Sky?

£5m to cover the boat race? Good grief.

Sky will move on negotiations. The have to. 5 sports channels going 24/7 need a lot of content. 50 Sottish games per season provides hundreds of hours of material when you factor in reruns and highlights.

If someone in the SPFL negotiation team has any gumption they can do a far better deal. I mean, £500k for three seasons worth of pay off games. Pathetic.

“Huge Irish presence at Celtic Park when I was a buoy and Young mhan. I wonder if anyone knows how much of the Irish support has dropped off since TV got so much power? I can only think if it’s hard for me it’s gotta be worse for our friends across the water”?

Four 3pm Sat KOs all season is a killer and they are seriously looking at giving up a load of STs and arranging game by game tickets.

By the bye, has Mrs Budge, who is being feted for asking questions yesterday, posed those questions she said needed raising after her team’s game at Ibrox? If she has, I am not aware of it.

  12. I was just sitting here thinkin(charlie nick style) about “donkey Doncaster in the SPFL, and the thought of a QI show came in to my mind,

The thing about Incompetent people is they DONT know they are being Incompetent,

they think they are doing a grand job.

    Till later all

  13. The amazing thing about the SPFL’s incompetence is that they ignored not one but three major issues with the fixture change.

    1) It gave Rangers a potential advantage if they knew how many points to play for and/or how many goals to score.

    2) They will be playing a team who have already won the title and for whom the result is of no consequence.

3)They will be playing to beat another team to second place who are the bitter rivals of the team they are up against.

I am not suggesting Hearts would lie down to them but remember the George Burley season when Celtic played Hearts at Tynecastle on the final day?

Celtic had already won the title but Rangers needed Celtic to avoid defeat to give them 2nd place and a CL qualifying spot. Hearts thrashed us 3-0 and the Huns were in uproar.

Not saying Celtic lay down to Hearts, but their season was over. They had nothing to play for and their minds were already on foreign beaches. Also, knowing the consequences of defeat, I’m sure they did not even have pride to play for.

So what I am saying is,:teams don’t NEED to lie down in such circumstances. All it takes is for them to lack motivation, as was the case with Celtic that day at Tynecastle.

I am sure the SPFL knew this all too well when they moved the game to the Sunday.

  15. On our way to Seville we had only 5 home Sat 3pm KOs in the League plus another Scottish Cup one.

However we played far less games under the old UEFA Cup format.

I really think that has as much to do with it as anything.

  16. “Quite a few of our home Saturday 3pm games were moved to Sunday not because of TV but because of the Europa League.”

    Tom,

I don’t think a single pre split game was moved to Sunday due to TV.

  17. Rules, what rules?

Scottish FA chief executive Stewart Regan says Dave King’s tax convictions could present a challenge in his bid to join the Rangers board.

The SFA are currently gathering information from the club so they can come to a conclusion on whether King is eligible to take up a role as chairman of the Ibrox side.

A fit and proper person test is not administered by the governing body but they do follow illustrative guidelines against which potential office bearers are measured.

King would potentially fall down on two counts. Firstly, the guidelines state consideration would be given as to whether an office bearer is fit and proper if “he has been convicted within the last 10 years of (i) an offence liable to imprisonment of two years or over, (ii) corruption or (iii) fraud”.

The businessman settled an income tax dispute in South Africa which saw him plead guilty and convicted of breaching 41 counts of the country’s Income Tax Act.

He agreed to pay £45m as a settlement. King also had to pay a fine of just under £210,000 or else face 82 years in jail.

He was also still on the board of directors at Rangers when the old company which operated the club went into administration in February 2012. The company subsequently entered liquidation and sold its assets to a newco.

Regan says his previous convictions could cause problems in the club’s bid to appoint him as chairman but it’s an investigation they’re not putting a time scale on.

“We’re in discussions with Rangers and their advisors,” he said. “We are gathering information from the club and Mr King. When we have all of that information the board will consider it and then decide whether or not we are prepared to accept Dave King as a fit and proper person to be the chairman of Rangers Football Club.

“We’re not in a position to put a time scale on it, when we’ve got the information we’ll decide.

“Any evidence from Mr King that would support why he believes that he is fit and proper in consideration to the list of criteria in our article 10 – which covers all of the areas regarding track record, background, insolvencies, any convictions etc. We’re seeking evidence and when we’ve got that evidence we’ll deal with it.

“It’s obviously a challenge for him and the club to try and present a case whereby the board can view it positively.

“But that’s what the club are seeking to do, they are providing evidence and when we’ve got that evidence we’ll be in a position to comment more fully.

“Paul Murray is equally being considered given that he was a director of a football club in an insolvency event in the previous five years.”

Earlier this month the Court of Session gave King permission to become a director of Rangers although this has no link or effect on the Scottish FA’s process.

  18. “The SFA are currently gathering information from the club so they can come to a conclusion on whether King is eligible to take up a role as chairman of the Ibrox side.”

    Tony,

I’m not sure I’d be looking there for fair and impartial information :)

  19. I’m just wondering about the information?

It’s there plain and simple, both where on the old board, ergo can’t be on another board in football here in Scotland until the five year rule is up, what’s hard to rule on that?

    The again……….

  20. Tony –

To be fair, no matter how clear it all appears to be in the public domain, the SFA still has to give them a fair hearing and will have asked Rangers to submit in writing their reasons why they believe King and Murray are “fit and proper”.

I think the SFA may yet surprise us all on this.

  21. TD67

It wont be any surprise when Dave King of Africa is cleared by the SFA.

Im sure he has lots of pals there.

Never mind Dave King, they would have given Adolf Hitler the ok.

Exactly, 2 different scenarios altogether ……. I think the SFA are preparing Mr King and Mr Murray for ‘a fall” since neither of them are ‘fit and proper’ at all, especially King….!!

  23. Gentlemen what Mr Reagan is actually saying here is that they haven’t yet found a technicality or loophole yet to allow them to be directors. You know like distinguishing a club and company etc etc.

That’s what they have done with everything else. Ably assisted by a compliant, racist media and compliant racist scottish institutions.

  24. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Why would anyone expect the SFA to follow normal rules when they are discussing The rangers.History has shown us rules will be bent and maybe even broken in order to favour the Ibrokes mob. H.H.

  25. must admit if its Sevco themselves providing information to the sfa about King with regard to him becoming a director of Sevco they arent exactly going to give negative details

I wouldnt be surprised if it was Paul Muray himself who supplied the ”information” to the sfa
