Fantastic result from Celtic Park

757

It was a fantastic result from Celtic Park last night for Scotland’s poor who are dependent on food aid.  Fans arrived in droves before kick off with bags full of provisions to restock food banks across the region.

I can sympathise with the SPFL to an extent.  Without a sponsor, they are even more dependent on satisfying television, and satisfying television often involves making unpopular decisions, but the mess they’ve made of scheduling the final Championship fixtures of the season is deeply embarrassing for our game.

Our game is looking more and more like it’s being run like a Banana Republic.  Generalissimo Doncaster has a case to answer.

I’m pretty sure no one at Celtic considered Leigh Griffiths as their number one striker when he signed a year ago.  That he has become so, is as much a result of his forward competition failing to deliver as much as his own talents, but there’s no denying Leigh’s ability.  He’s turned into a vibrant, productive striker who scores all types of goals.

It’s the final game of the regular league season. But results on that day will determine who is where in the play off positions.

    Dunfermline ’68, what a crowd.

I recall money being thrown on to the park so the weans would run onto collect the coins and lose their space – it was that full. There was a guy from govan who fell from the roof to his death that night. They say that over 50,000 travelled from Glasgow for the game – with the league already won.

  16. Celtic Chief Executive Peter Lawwell said: “This week as we remember our Founding Father, Brother Walfrid, 100 years after his death, we are marking it in the best way possible. The collection for the Foodbanks at last night’s match was a fitting tribute to his memory.

John Hughes keeps poker face during nine holes with John Collins

    Published on 17 April 2015

    Alasdair Fraser

AS OMENS go, it wasn’t the greatest for John Hughes.

There was his friend John Collins, the Celtic assistant manager, clattering a 30-yard approach shot through the green, bang off a concrete boundary wall and back to within 10 feet of the pin.

Collins being Collins, as the Caley Thistle manager put it, then shamelessly holed the putt.

The pair, acquaintances in youth and at Celtic onwards, remain very close and shared a round after Celtic drew 1-1 in Inverness in the league on Saturday, prelude to Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final showdown at Hampden Park.

Hughes will hope for that kind of luck falling sweetly on his own side when the real contest unfolds in the national stadium. While the game of golf was competitive enough, thoughts of the coming weekend kept bubbling to the surface.

“After Saturday’s match I spent a wee nine holes with Collins on Monday and that guy plays poker with his cards up his jumper,” Hughes observed. “It was like a war of attrition with each of us trying to pick the other’s brains [about their plans for semi-final].

“Eventually we just gave up and shook hands and said see you Sunday. We got a half, but the luck that guy gets is unbelievable.”

Fortune favours the brave, they say, and if Hughes’ team is to miss out on a first Scottish Cup final in it’s history – it is a decade now since back-to-back semi-final appearances – it will not be through timidity.

The Caley Thistle manager believes his team is primed to have a right go at Celtic and insists all the pressure is on Ronny Deila and his men, given their much-trumpeted tilt at the treble.

None of that should be interpreted as a lack of respect for the champions-elect, though: Hughes waxes lyrical about Deila, Collins and his team and points to his own players’ SPFL player of the year nominations as proof of how highly they regard Celtic.

“Last Saturday’s draw won’t have any bearing on the semi-final,” Hughes said. “The pitch will be a lot quicker and slicker. It will suit Celtic because it’s like a second home to them.

“They were there last month for the League Cup final and our fans will be outnumbered four to one. The Celtic fans are the best supporters in the world. They are non-stop and our boys have to recognise that’s the case. We need to get settled as quickly as possible, not be fazed, and keep that back door shut as long as we can. But the pitch and occasion will also suit us.

“I think the pressure is on Celtic because they are going for the treble, but they have the best individual players. When you look at who our guys are voting in the PFA awards, it’s mainly Celtic players. So that’s what my players think of them – they recognise how good a team they are and the wonderful football they play.”

Hughes’ own regard for Deila will be drawn from his acquaintance with Collins lending insight into how the Norwegian operates, but also, perhaps, from the similarities in style between Inverness and Celtic.

From infinitely more modest means, Hughes, like Deila, has his players playing slick passing and possession-orientated football which, at it’s best, is pleasing on the eye.

“I’ve got great respect for the job Ronny and John have done,” the 50-year-old said. “They got off to a slow start but when they go for it, Celtic, they really are at it.

“When the Scottish Cup semi-final draw was approaching I looked at three of my former clubs in the hat and said to myself if we were going to win it we were going to have to beat Celtic. If we do, I fancy our chances of winning it.

“Psychologically, the result last Saturday tells our players something positive and it’s my job now to make sure that come Sunday we go out and express ourselves. We can’t afford to feel inferior to Celtic. When we express ourselves, that’s when we are at our best.”

Caley Thistle, Hughes muses, could finish the season tomorrow and be proud of the high endeavour that has taken them 90 minutes from a second major final and to the brink of European football.

The icing on the cake, as he sees it, is there for the taking and the remaining challenges there to enjoy.

“If the season was to finish tomorrow I would say to these boys it has been absolutely outstanding, given the way they’ve taken everything onboard and adapted,” he said. “The way they train and the demands they put on themselves, the standards they set, are wonderful.

“But now we have got here, near the end of the season when the prizes get handed out, we’ve earned the right to be there. So there’s no fear whatsoever. You need a mind tool, with no trepidation, to be able to express yourself.

“There will be times when, if you have great belief in your own ability, you can come out on top in the one v one battles. Nine times out of 10, if you are doing that, there’s a real chance you’ll win.

“That’s what we need to happen to beat Celtic. I have so much respect for Celtic but if you punch them on the nose, they bleed – and we need to give it a right good go.”
