Faux precipice, the £30m man, fan shakedown

1204

Lots going on today, we’ll maybe have a second blog this evening on Craig Gordon, but for now….

Last month I wrote that Dave King’s Fit and Proper issue was a faux precipice.  If he was not found Fit and Proper he, “could easily appoint his own people to the PLC board, he would be able to attend board meetings and bark whatever orders necessary.”  This issue would not prevent King from investing in the club, or from gaining the kind of influence Mike Ashley had until recently.

There are no SFA rules which could prohibit an unfit and improper person from being the 100% owner of a club.  The matter is in the very literal sense, a formality.

Still, in passing such a tainted convict, who has already sat on the board of a club which sailed into liquidation, was subject to considerable criticism from an SPL judicial report, and had his honesty derided by a South African judge, the SFA, have made an improper decision.  It’s a marginal call whether our man is better working on the inside or taking nothing to do with it.  Neither option is satisfactory, the only permanent resolution to this scourge of the ages is to leave Scottish football behind.

For what it’s worth, I think King is utterly brilliant.  Sounding a bit like Rhett Butler in an interview with the Daily Record, he said, “Quite frankly I don’t give a damn what people say or write about me.  I will do whatever I think is best for me. The media and the fans will make no difference to my success or failure.”

Stand down all you psychological profilers.

The guy is perfect, how did he convince so many fans he was good for them?  Wait, I remember.  In the same article he said:

“The only way we can access that revenue is to compete with Celtic. To do that, in our first year back we are going to have to treble our wage bill as a minimum. Depending on how Dermot Desmond responds we may need to make it four times bigger.”

“First year back……. treble our wage bill…… minimum….. may need to make it four times bigger”.

He went on, “I have lost £20m in Rangers already and I’m happy to lose another £30m because I love the team”.

£30m.  Go for it, Dave, we’d all love to see it.  That would teach Celtic a lesson.

Here’s a few predictions.  The No Surrender to a perceived enemy days will be back in spades.  They need to dislodge Celtic, its influence and its support.  Expect bad PR when a fan illegally disposes of litter and the onslaughts against our CEO to continue.  They have not been able to lay a glove on Ronny for months, but wait until we draw a game at home.  Players should avoid camera phones, and Scott Brown should never sit down in public.  Anthony Stokes will be cautioned against use of a flagrantly Irish accent.

Whatever money is available will flood into the coffers in a desperate attempt to close the gap with Celtic, but there will be no trebling of wages or £30m investment.  Instead, the fans will be asked to stump up the big numbers.  In the event Mike Ashley is held in abeyance, the window between now and the money running out is critical.  I expect nothing more than a shambles, they don’t have the money or the intelligence to take Celtic on, but this is their one big play.  Celtic are ready.

Fancy winning two tickets for premium seats in the Jock Stein Stand for Trophy Day on Sunday, courtesy of Magners?  To win, email me the name of the Celtic keeper who won Sportswriters’ Player of the Year this season.  Put the name in the SUBJECT field of your email and send to celticquicknews@gmail.com

COMPETITION CLOSES AT 21:00 tonight, 20 May.

There was some stunning news today.  Mary’s Meals, a charity founded in Scotland 13 years ago, now feed over 1m children each day.  Almost three thousand of them are in schools funded by you in Malawi.  While entering the competition you might want to donate £1 to the Mary’s Meals pot here.

This success is partly yours, so read what you’ve done.

    West End of East End:

    Presumptuous and discourteous.

    ————————————————————–

But seems to have hit a nerve…

Logging off as I’m in work and the betting ads are causing me firewall problems, I’ll check in later when I get home to see how the monkeys are getting on….

  2. Paul

Your leader is an invitation for us all to accept a tainted immoral abuse of the rules, business and association, to appease the loons of Scottish football.

    That decision and the cowardice that preceded it for the last three years merely underlines what we have known for decades;

that SFA is run by a bunch of blazer clad amateurs solely for the greater good of one team, who happen to reside in the Govan hovel.

A side governed and riddled by a 17th century “we arra peepul” mentality.

What we should be doing is exploring how Celtic can publicly call out the rampant governance malfeasance which we are expected to ignore “to avoid Armageddon.”

What ways can Celtic stop meekly bowing a knee to the bias and cheating?

What means can Celtic and Celtic fans take to express our discontent?

How can we stop the anti Celtic program in its tracks?

Rather than asking players, tongue in cheek, to avoid littering for fear of bad publicity, how can we punish those who seek to bring us down?

If the answer to the above is NOTHING, as it was over the semi final handball incident and the shocking culture of corruption, then our club and our fans should just withdraw.

Withdraw participation in football administration in this sadly bent and biased organization.

    Withdraw participation in their competitions.

Withdraw our financial support from media who strive to bolster their circulation or viewing figures by headlining their anti Celtic agenda.

I’d rather we DIDN’T just move on and stood up on our hind legs and roared like Lisbon Lions

“WE ARE NOT GOING TO TAKE IT ANY MORE.”

  3. Praecepta,

No sure or the relevance of that post, I simply answered your question why all the angst.

The game in Scotland is no longer a sport it’s that simple.

I never asked why it’s not a sport or why the governance is corrupt it was a statement is all.

But, there is loads the Celtic board can do, one simple example

Refuse to enter and SFA competitions, just don’t apply to compete, that would be a very clear message, no ?

  5. Well done Craig Gordon – an incredible come back. And a great accolade for a supreme display of goalkeeping this season.

    Hi Paul67,

Excellent piece, no doubt you are correct, the idea that new Rangers will treble/quadruple their playing wage bill in a Season is nonsensical – even if they could this would not guarantee success (remember the chap that said for every £5 Celtic spend, we’ll spend £10 – how did that work out.)

Celtic’s wage bill is by far the biggest in Scotland, though money isn’t thrown at players, Celtic have developed, refined and managed the players’ remuneration over a decade to maximize the bang for buck and it is still a work-in-progress.

You allude to the fact that you don’t think Dave King is going to come up with the money he’s (re)promised. Back in December and January we heard such big talk when DCK needed to get shot of MASH. Yet there was NO money forth coming once he got his resolutions past. Has he used the SFA F&PP “test” as a delaying tactic, an excuse not to pay up?

Well it is very lucky for him that he’s been passed just in time for Season Book renewal – a cynic might say he’s be working hand-in-glove with football’s placemen to ensure such a serendipitous turn of events – I couldn’t possibly comment.

    Hail Hail

    Oldtim67,

    my sincere condolences, stay strong.

Lots of infighting between ourselves ;-(( – has anyone considered the ramifications of the GSL’s notice of intent regarding the outstanding loan? Seems to me that he wants rid of the so called onerous contracts/debt and is either preparing for an admin event or to somehow fleece der Hun Hoards.

I’m still looking on with amusement at the ongoing farce at Ibrokes ;-))

    Afternoon all!

When asked if he (Glibs) and Sevco had the funds to pay back Big Mikes £5 million loan…

Glibs: “Of course we do. It’s always been part of the plan, but it’s just a question of whether it’s an appropriate thing to do.”

Hunbelievable. Why does he think it may not be appropriate to repay the loan? (rhetorical question… unless you’re lurking, Glibs!)

  8. Could someone explain this part to me please:

“the only permanent resolution to this scourge of the ages is to leave Scottish football behind”

This appears to rule out reform of the SFA. The article says Celtic are “ready” and led by people with more intelligence than their Rangers counterparts, we have a billionaire owner, our CEO is on the SFA board and we are Scottish football only superpower and yet it’s not possible to reform the SFA. Why is it not possible to reform the governance of Scottish football to make it fair, open, accountable and fit for the 21st century?

I understand that Scottish football is tribal and that a movement started by Celtic will automatically be opposed to by a large number of people. With the wheeler dealers we have available I don’t believe it’s not possible to get someone esle to start and lead the movement and for us to lend our support.

Unless someone can come up with a better explanation the only logical conlcusion to draw is that the Celtic hierarchy are quite happy with the corruption.

  9. West End of East End:

What nerve? The fact that you were behaving like an internet coward hit a nerve with me, nah! take a wee bit of advice from me mate, I don’t give a toss, never did, but I’m man enough to tell that to the face of the man I’m typing it to, always have, always did.

I have a wee rule to myself on here mate, a simple wee rule, if I would brick it to say it to his face then don’t say it.

Now get back to work and stop skimming off the company.

Didn’t Hearts and Aston Villa put charity names as shirt sponsors?

Hertz have Save the Children on their jerseys.

It is however the best shirt sponsor they have ever had. Two fans have paid for the sponsorship and put the save the children name on the jerseys.

Numerically it is the best shirt sponsor deal in their history. Dr Budge is smart. Hertz have not had any bad PR since she came in the door. You have to respect her record for a rookie football owner.

    Kit- well remembered.

AV had ‘acorns’ on their jerseys a few years ago -it is a children’s hospice in the Midlands.

They have since gone back to being sponsored by a bookmaker.

HMFC are going to have ‘Save the Children’ on their jerseys next season.

  16. So, what if the huns come up to Celtic’s league…will yeez all chip-in to put another ‘statement’ into the Herald to be printed the week before we play them?

If you answered yes….would good do you think it will do?

Will it bring the change to the SFA that will stop hun-corruption?

Will it shame the Celtic board into wholesale resignations at, allow the club to be run by a group of non kow-towing Celtic supporters?

Or, will it do what it did the 1st time you all chipped-in….provide a new job for yer fridge magnets?

Don’t know about Villa, but a bunch of businesses donated money to Save The Children (£500k?) and to Hearts (£500k?) so Hearts could advertise the charity. This removed the need for a commercial advert on the shirt. So cost Hearts nothing. Good publicity though – it even has Celtic blogs talking about it.

    Livibhoy,

Celtic, as you will know, do terrific work with the homeless and with disabled people. I prefer that quieter approach which is a contrast to the gimmick approach of a shirt sponsor.

So as well as dogy penalty, offside decisions at leas t one hibs player will get sent off and possibly Stubbs as well.. easty to do just say , on the grounds of probability, he said something offensive,, even if no one heard it he probably did so off he goes!

If I was a rich man, which I’m not, if I had billions of pounds, which I don’t, and if I was a billionaire and a Celtic Supporter, which I’m not (the former not the latter) I’d donate the best sponsorship deal we were offered, in any given year, to have Mary’s Meals on the chest of every Celtic player and Supporter. After all, I’d die before I’d spent my billions but what a legacy to feed and educate kids, strangers, kids from millions of miles away from the world in which we live in.

Me, I’ve got a few hundred finger rosarys form Westminster Cathedral to sell for Mary’s Meals but every time I approach anybody to sell them they all want a cut. Greed is leeching of the bones of the starving.

When you stop and think about it, Hearts have some good attributes.

  26. Captain Beefheart on

    Livi,

    If nobody instigates change………………

I’m pretty sure that CFC are not the only ones advocating change. Like all Associations there is little room for statutory litigation by way of; fines, points deduction or expulsion that could not be challenged by lawyers.

Expressing opinion about ‘perceived’ compliant corruption (unadulterated proof) leaves the ‘complainer’ open to a lawsuit/sanctions.

Only the ‘collective’ can make the changes (that’s assuming they have the bottle/will to do so). Maybe it’s time to make the SFA a plc – that way it would at least be subject to corporate law and accountability.

Me? I don’t have the time (years left) or the resources to tackle it. Meantime I can only offer support for Celtic – whether they heed my opinions I doubt I will ever know!

  28. yip paid to wear a charity and show how compassionate you are. there is a man who runs the London Marathon as a deep sea diver… always interviewed on tv..only last year did it mention that he is a PAID charity worker on double my wages… always said on tv that he was running for charity.. A huge difference. don’t get me started on wages for Wogan etc on Children on need…

  29. ps if I was a billionaire i would make sure there were no adverts on the hoops!
