Final deck clearing for deadline day

1075

The day has arrived, 31 August, on a Champions League season, but news has been slow (in general) or there has been no news (at Celtic) so far.  Pity help those who were not busy this morning and have burned through a packed of antacids.  Deadline day reveals human nature in all its glory.

Last night Ipswich Town agreed a deal to take Daryl Murphy, whom they had on loan last season and the final six months of the previous season.  Daryl would have been keen to bring his Celtic uncertainty to an end (he is out of contract when this loan period at Ipswich expires) as he has clearly enjoyed more success in the English Championship.

We didn’t see the best of Daryl but it’s good news Celtic were prepared to release him.  He would surely have been retained if there was not a good chance of recruiting a replacement.  No promises, of course!

Stay tuned throughout the day.  If we have another ‘Robbie Keane Day’ when the CQN server takes a battering I’ll update the Facebook page and Twitter.

  1. Malone Bhoy : I too think he will go for more in his next transfer but that’s more because of the inflated EPL prices, Huddersfield seemly turned down £4million bid last season so we would have to have bid more.. I don’t think we should taken a £5million chance him.

Rhanks. I did not know much about that player. I guess he was not enough good at Schalke. I hear that Spartak Moscow keep the right to make first buy option.

Spartak Moscow were looking for big names. The list of those who rejected their offer is long.

The one from today is Joe Cole. Yesterday it was Niclas Bendtner.

  8. Berbatov supposed to be signing for Fulham and has went AWOL. Twitter rumour now he is on private jet to Glasgow. lol!

My blood pressure could not take Samaras and Berbatov in the same team…

  9. @Malone Bhoy

    Thats a false economy.

Value is inherently based on perception, and market buoyancy. We’re in the SPL, where no club other than us has paid £100,00 for a player in 5 years.

If Fletcher was in the SPL, people wouldn’t be bidding £12m for him, because there wouldn’t be the additional inflation brought about by the merry-go-round that is the Championship.

It’s a fools game to believe that clubs/organisations pay what the player is worth as a universal truth. Thats “Football Manager” thinking.

I think Rhodes is a smashing wee player, but we’re not in a financial position to be spending £4m on ANY player these days. Thats just not the league we’re in. EVEN, and I mean even, if you were confident of doubling that money by flipping the player in a few years.

Buy low, sell high is a great strategy in football.

Buy high, hope to sell higher, is playing russian roulette.

  10. Celtic are closing in on a deal to sign Efe Ambrose from Israeli side FC Ashdod.

The £1.5m rated Nigerian centre half has been watched a number of times since the turn of the year with the success of Beram Kayal providing Celtic with a strong profile in Israel.

A number of defensive options have been considered with Willy Boly of Auxerre strongly linked with a move earlier this week.

However once clubs or agents go public to talk up moves to Celtic it usually brings negotiations to a swift halt.

It’s believed that Celtic have already applied to the Department of Work and Pensions for a work permit with Ambrose expected to be included in the squad to visit St Johnstone on September 15 before the Champions League opener against Benfica four days later.

Ambrose has been virtually an ever present with FC Ashdod over the last two seasons while breaking into the full Nigerian international side having previously been capped at all levels and taking part in the 2008 Olympic Games.

The 23-year-old has been linked with a move to clubs in Holland and Belgium, he also had a trial with Manchester City in January, but the lure of playing for Celtic in the Champions League has added to the attraction of a move to Scotland.

  13. Thing in with Celtic, we usually keep things very quiet until we make a bid or actually sign the player!

Here’s hoping for a centre back and a striker, maybe even two

  14. @CultsBhoy loves being 1st forever & ever

Michael Owen on a pay per play deal whd please me..

I’m not against that sort of deal myself, but it’s not going to happen.

Owen is going to want to go someplace where he either starts games, or is paid exceptionally well. He’s smart enough to realise that it’s better to make the right noises and be a team player and prolong your career in the top flight, than to accept coming to the SPL and being on the scrap heap – HELLO James Beattie, Francis Jeffers (and kinda David Healy too) etc.

Owen rightly sees his career following the path of Louis Saha (or even Kevin Phillips). Good money, don’t rock the boat, avoid mickey mouse leagues, play football.

They were not directed at Celtic or anyone connected to the club, I don’t consider it wise or necessary to become embroiled in someone else’s battle.
