Fit & proper waste of time

760

The proposed SFA rule change, that clubs must conduct an investigation into prospective new owners, went through unopposed at the Association’s AGM, currently underway at Hampden.  No formal rules must be observed during this investigation, not even the ‘Gandhi criminal rule’ postulated by (still) SPL chief executive, Neil Doncaster, so a club can look into the matter as deeply as they see appropriate and the former owner can claim he was “duped” after the money appears in his bank account.

This does not strengthen efforts to keep unfit people from owning Scottish clubs, if anything, it provides errant clubs with a defence.  Previously it was explicitly the club’s responsibility to ensure owners were fit and proper, now the club’s responsibility is limited to carrying out an unspecified value judgement.  Tune in soon to hear “We carried out an investigation consistent with best practice, why punish us?”

In this instance, value judgements are worth as much as Ibrox valuations. It’s not the rules that are wrong, the only problem is one club didn’t respect the rules and doesn’t like the medicine.

No mention yet of the dark Fifa cloud hanging over the Association. Perhaps it’s slipped their mind.

I wonder if the SFA intend to provide a definition of what ‘fit and proper’ actually means, given that there already seems to have been a great deal of confusion about the meaning (and value) of ‘sporting integrity’.

Is there any mention of the punishment for failing to comply with the requirement to ensure that a new owner is a fit and proper person?

  5. 'crushed nuts?' 'Naw, Layringitis!' on

The fact that RFC(ia) were paying players via EBT would have been known to the SFA from the outset. The body responsible for players’ registration may not have been formally notified but they would have been informally aware of this method of payment.

The revolving door between RFC(ia) and SFA/SPL would have meant that this knowledge was widely shared. My personal opinion is that RFC(ia) didn’t believe they were doing anything wrong, in fact that appears to still be the case!

In the meantime greenybhoy appears to be doing all he can to eff up the CVA, whilst at the same time using the MSM to blackmail scottish football into accepting newclub with no sanctions.

This is the end of days!

  6. I see Rangers confirmed that the pre-season tour will be to Germany, specifically Lower Saxony. How can this be confirmed given the current financial position and the lack of clarity on players, status, exclusion and all the rest?

And what travel company or hotel would take bookings without payment up front?

  7. But what if the prospective buyer isn’t really a fit and proper person but is the only one willing to save the establishment team so that the whole of Scottish football can survive. What then, blind eye?

    Aye, agree with that.

  9. If they are going to do a self assessment then they should carry them out like a risk assessment. You can grade the believability of each of the proposed person’s statements and then write in the comments further actions that may be required such as phone the police or move to country without extradition orders.

Bulgaria 2 – 2 Scotland ( Bulgaria scored 3 mins into injury time).

How can we produce such decent results at this level then when these same guys get to the full international level they become seasoned exponents of mediocrity? Do imposters of the Levein ilk have specially made taps that extracts all the creative sap from these kids? Is poor coaching to blame? Why are guys like John Collins ( probably our most accomplished player of the last twenty years) not at the very forefront of coaching in this country?

Coaching is important: Only 2,769 English coaches hold Uefa’s B, A and Pro badges

    • Spain has 23,995, Italy 29,420 and Germany 34,790. Spain has the highest concentration of coaches of any European nation.

God knows how many we have: 3.5 coaches and a collie dug. But then we’ve goat Largs.

  14. philvisreturns on

Gordon_J – But another irony presents itself. If there were to be no Rangers, old or new, in Scottish football next season then there is the time to kill it off entirely and instead build a genuinely new club. One that does not have the toxic history of the Ibrox club, its years of sectarian employment policies and rioting fans, and that’s even before all of the current financial shenanigans.

An interesting thought, but sadly optimistic in my view.

Any Rangers NewCo will be considerably weaker than OldCo Rangers is today.

We’ve seen in the past how Rangers supporters react to their club not regularly winning trophies – they walk away, leaving a bitter rump of diehards behind.

So NewCo is more likely to have to pitch its appeal to the atavistic WeArraPeepul, Nobody-Likes-Us-We-Don’t-Care, Gies-Our-Orange-Jerseys mob.

Certainly there doesn’t seem to be any sense of contrition surrounding Rangers, from Super Ally publicly demanding identities be exposed to their fans forums being full of stuff about how they want to the whole of Scottish football destroyed rather than see Rangers punished for its misdeeds.

If and when a Rangers NewCo is admitted to the Scottish leagues, at whatever level, it will be as sorry for its past transgressions as OJ Simpson was. (thumbsup)

Poland have the same self destructive qualities as Scotland I’m afraid.

For Poland to get through they need to beat Greece and we all know that Greece are a hard side to break down. If they don’t beat Greece they can forget it as the Russians are too strong and the Czechs are just lucky but I hope they manage it.

Germany and Holland will get through

Spain will qualify and then take your pick. Never write off the Italians – they can get out of awkward situations as well as any of the big nations. They were playing absolute gash before the world cup in 2006 and look what happened.

  28. According to reports Wigan Athletic striker Hugo Rodallega is interesting SPL giants Celtic.

The Colombian striker is a free agent after his contract at the DW Stadium expired at the end of the season and he is being linked with a number of clubs including the Hoops and Tottenham Hotspur.

Wigan Athletic midfielder James McArthur believes Celtic will find it tough to persuade Rodallega to head north.

McArthur said: “He’s the club’s all-time leading scorer in the Premiership so the fans love him here and will be sorry to see him go,” McArthur said.

“If he goes to Celtic I’m sure the supporters there would take to him too. Even when he was a sub last season, when he warmed up the fans would chant ‘Hugo, Hugo’. He’ll always be remembered for his contribution here.

“It’s no surprise he’s been linked with a lot of big clubs. Spurs have also been mentioned so it would be a real coup if Neil could tempt him to Celtic.

“He’s scored goals in the Premiership so there’s no doubt he would do the same in the SPL. No disrespect but the standard of defenders he’d be up against won’t be as good as down in England so he’d score a lot of goals in Scotland.

“Having played with him for two years, I know Hugo is capable of playing for one of the top clubs in England and I’d be surprised if they aren’t in for him this summer.

“He’s good enough to play for one of the top six in the Premiership so that’s what Celtic might be up against.”

  29. From the ET

Neil Lennon cashes in on Efrain Juarez

    Ronnie Cully

    Senior Sports Writer

NEIL LENNON will look to immediately re-invest the money raised from the sale of Efrain Juarez to Mexican side Club America.

And, with several other players who have been identified as surplus to requirements also being ushered towards the exit door at Parkhead, the funds to bring in the central defender, striker and keeper the Hoops boss has prioritised are set to swell further.

Just as important is reducing the wage bill to make room for new additions. And the departure of Juarez – who cost £2.4million when he arrived from UNAM in the summer of 2010 – will free up a substantial amount.

With Daniel Majstorovic, Glenn Loovens, Mark Wilson and Darren O’Dea already off the payroll, Lennon would like to get his new signings in as quickly as possible, and hoped to conclude some of his business before going on a family holiday.

But, with most other bosses already on their summer break he may be thwarted in that ambition.

Lennon has once again been linked with New-castle striker Leon Best, whom Celtic tried to bring north on loan in January. At that time, the 25-year-old re-jected the offer, claim-ing he did not wish to change clubs because his son was only a few weeks old.

Now, with just a year left on his contract, the Republic of Ireland international may have had a change of heart.

Indications are Newcastle spoke to Celtic to see if they are still interested, rather than the other way around.

As reported in SportTimes yesterday, Wigan’s Hugo Rodallega could be one of the strikers they sound out as the Colombian runs down his contract this month.

But Lennon could face stiff competition from Owen Coyle for Leicester City defender Matt Mills, with reports today suggesting the Bolton boss has made a strong move to land the stopper.

  30. Ukraine?

Ten players on Ukraine’s national football team were stricken with food poisoning less than a week before the side is scheduled to play its first Euro 2012 match, coach Oleg Blokhin said on Wednesday.

“This situation is not funny. (Midfielder Anatoliy) Tymoshchuk had to be given an intravenous drip,” Blokhin said.

It was not clear what the players ate to make them ill, nor was it possible to say, yet, whether the mass illness would affect the side’s chances at the European championship, Blokhin said.

“The only good thing is this didn’t take place on June 11,” he said in reference to the team’s first Euro game against Sweden. “If it did, I would not have been able to field 11 players.” The incident occurred in Germany where Ukraine played and lost their final tune-up match 2-0 against Turkey on Tuesday night in Ingolstadt. Blokhin spoke early Wednesday after the team’s arrival in Kiev for the tournament the nation co-hosts with Poland June 8-July 1.

Blokhin said he and his players accepted responsibility for the defeat at Turkey’s hands, despite the mass illness.

“Our team lost, the players did not perform adequately, and the coach did not perform adequately,” he said
