Football in July, the brilliant Dave King

1046

Celtic play their fifth and final preseason friendly tomorrow before Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier in Armenia.  Five games feels light.  Legs will still be tired after each game, the prospect of 90 minutes in extreme heat will not be welcome.

Opponents Alashkert will have played only three preseason games before facing Celtic, each against lower league Russian opponents, so while they will cope better with the heat, their underlying fitness will not be better than Celtic’s.

In theory, Tuesday’s game should be welcomed as an opportunity to increase preparedness before the tougher challenges that lie ahead.  But this is football in July, when normal rules do not apply, as Lincoln Red Imps demonstrated two years ago.

Loved the lack of logic in Dave King’s written response to BBC’s Alasdair Lamont’s question on the Takeover Panel’s Contempt of Court proceedings.  “The [Takeover Panel] know that I live in [South Africa] and that it will require exchange control approval to move the funds to London.  They are just bullying me”.

The Takeover Panel’s rules (which exist for everyone) that an offer has to have proven funds in the UK is not an actual impediment.  If King’s funds were not in the UK, he would be unable to pay for the shares three weeks after the offer is made.

Takeover Panel rules merely bring the date cash is required forward by three weeks.  Still, I am sure this talk of bullying will make the Takeover Panel think twice before crossing King again.

This guy is beyond brilliant.  He is behaving like this openly.  You know how it ends.

Last full day in Nuremberg today, so taking my… ahem… research into German beer very seriously and have already had three Krombacher’s before heading downtown. Nice City, Nuremberg. Still has a well preserved walled city area, with lots of interesting medieval buildings. The wall has nemerous towers. Obviously an imposing city back in the day.

Not sure how things will be today, as I think all shops still close on a Sunday. I hope the bars are open. I am not religious, but I am a fan of Sunday being a day without shops. We would all benefit from one day a week without Capitalism. Family time, friends time, your own time, whatever. Society would benefit from a return to traditional Sundays imo.

Anyhoo, off oot, it’s sunny ?

Might change my views if I cannae find an open bar ?

The first thing to be said about the statement from the police is that if the incident was reported at 4.20 then it was reported by a prophet, given that the City Cash Tailors’ (Final Clearance) Select came past as people were leaving after Mass at about 5pm.

That anyone could describe spitting on someone (let alone a priest) as a minor incident is breathtaking. Then we have the old “not taking part in the parade” drivel. If you’re running alongside the Crimplene Crew and are, together with them, shouting sectarian and racist abuse while being escorted by police, you’re taking part in the parade.

How it is that the police were “unable to confirm the circumstances” is another of life’s mysteries. There were three midget female officers within three yards of the priest and a further 15 or so male officers at the corner of Kent Street which is maybe 15 yards away.

Robert McLean of the Orange Lodge said “This is nothing whatsoever to do with the parade”. Robert McLean of the Orange Lodge is a liar.

I must admit I posted the link before reading the article – however at least the story was carried – as far as I can see the bbc website has nothing on it.

This is a hate crime nothing less – I hope the priest has formally reported it.

STV website now running with it, Gene.

The comment from the dafty on behalf of the police about any link between the incident and the parade should not be read at the same time as drinking any kind of liquid.

  8. Re the Assault on the priest by ‘followers’ of the OO. How about contacting your local MSP to ask about what is being done. I’d like to see an MSP raise this issue in Holyrood. Hands up who believes that either an SNP or Labour MSP would raise this in Parliament. Now substitute a Catholic priest for a Rabbi or Iman and I would hazard a guess that there would be a plethora of MSP’s falling over themselves to be the 1st to voice their outrage and indignation that a member of a minority clergy has been assaulted on a Scottish street.

1 country many cultures – (unless you are of the Irish Catholic diaspora)

  9. I have just read the news report on STV’s website on the assault yesterday, the Police say it was a man , at 4.20 and do not link it to the parade, is this the same incident in which a Priest was spat on verbally abused and spat on? It seems to be something entirely different, although that might be the intention.

  10. Imagine the outrage and all else if what happened yesterday had been at a Mosque, a Synagogue or any other place of worship other than a Catbolic Church.  I hope Canon Tom is OK as well as those who had to witness  it taking place.

I once complained to a copper when called a Fenian B as I went to mass at St Columbkille’s in Rutherglen. He looked at me as if to say I don’t want to be here any more than you do and you know what will happen if I attempt to uphold the law!

Have always found it rather strange and sinister too that these marches always seem to go by our Churches when mass is coming out.

My hometown, Cleator Moor in West Cumbria, in 1884. The matter was raised in parliament and the OO marches were banned from the town as a result. Note that they paraded past the Catholic church.

“Disturbances in the area were regular particularly when Orangemen assembled on the 12th July and on that date in 1884, the most serious of them occurred. That was the year the local Orange Lodges decided to hold their annual gathering at Cleator Moor, a deliberately provocative move: “as if to court disturbance the Orangemen… decided they would this year hold their annual demonstration in the stronghold of the enemy” The marchers including eight bands paraded past the Catholic church and held their assembly at Wath Brow. As the gathering broke up and the Orangemen made their way back to the train station, trouble broke out. They were attacked by groups of local men throwing stones and then rushing them. Some of the marchers carried revolvers, cutlasses and pikes which they now used. A local postal messenger, Henry Tumelty, a 17-year-old Catholic was shot in the head and killed while others were listed as having received injuries from these weapons. The local Catholic priests defended their parishioners saying they had been provoked beyond measure by the foul sectarian tunes and the weaponry. Fr. Wray expressed serious regret: “It has thrown us back at least twenty years.”

  15. Questions for Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP in general (given that they are majority party in the Scottish parliament at present)

What relevance has a battle fought in a foreign country over 3 hundred years ago in the modern, inclusive Scotland you promote?

Why do you allow sectarian parades to continue in the modern all inclusive Scotland you promote?

Why should our hard earned Taxes be spent on policing these overtly Sectarian marches?

Now explain to me why is should continue to vote SNP?

SS- a friend of mine was a sergeant in Rutherglen many years ago, after being pre-warned not to stop outside St Columkilles on the Main St, they did, and he disbanded the ‘parade’ on the spot.A few days later the station commander summoned him after the unwashed complained about him. After explaining the story, he was congratulated on his actions, he is not RC by the way.HH

    Questions for oglach….

Speaking after the meeting, Nicola Sturgeon said: “Scotland is a place where we celebrate our differences, while recognising the many things that unite us and where people of all races, faiths and background feel safe and respected.

“It is important that everyone is open to each other’s values and it is essential that we safeguard our shared vision of a multicultural, open and tolerant Scotland. Our faith communities play a significant role here, and abroad, and we welcome their contribution and input into our nation’s civic life to enrich us all.”

You have me confused with someone else. I voted SNP – however i’m seriously reconsidering that for many reasons including their willingness to criminalise young football fans by pretending a flawed law was to tackle sectarianism while ignoring the real issues – IE OO marches etc . Problem being i wouldn’t know who to vote for next time they are all as crap as each other. Talk the talk but never walk the walk.

The Act was kicked out by everyone but the party i voted for . Sadly as you know they actually argued for its retention reasoning it would weaken the powers we had to fight Sectarian / Hate crimes in Scotland. Total absolute crap as we all know given there were adequate laws to deal with the issue before the Act was made law in Scotland.

The SNP / Labour have done nothing and probably will do nothing to curtail the OO marches.

Given that the only Party who voted firstly to introduce and then to retain the legislation was the SNP, and that every other party voted against the introduction of the legislation and then to repeal it, that is a bizarre statement, even for you.

We still haven’t heard even one SNP politician breath a word of criticism of the Act.

The Scots & North Irish fashion and good taste police can stand down for a wee while longer albeit rumours of shoddily made ill fitting fake Hummel shirts being spotted on the streets persist. Sevco manufacturers Hummel are allegedly over joyed as this is the 1st time someone has actually thought it was worthwhile counterfeiting some of their garments.
