Football in July, the brilliant Dave King

1046

Celtic play their fifth and final preseason friendly tomorrow before Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier in Armenia.  Five games feels light.  Legs will still be tired after each game, the prospect of 90 minutes in extreme heat will not be welcome.

Opponents Alashkert will have played only three preseason games before facing Celtic, each against lower league Russian opponents, so while they will cope better with the heat, their underlying fitness will not be better than Celtic’s.

In theory, Tuesday’s game should be welcomed as an opportunity to increase preparedness before the tougher challenges that lie ahead.  But this is football in July, when normal rules do not apply, as Lincoln Red Imps demonstrated two years ago.

Loved the lack of logic in Dave King’s written response to BBC’s Alasdair Lamont’s question on the Takeover Panel’s Contempt of Court proceedings.  “The [Takeover Panel] know that I live in [South Africa] and that it will require exchange control approval to move the funds to London.  They are just bullying me”.

The Takeover Panel’s rules (which exist for everyone) that an offer has to have proven funds in the UK is not an actual impediment.  If King’s funds were not in the UK, he would be unable to pay for the shares three weeks after the offer is made.

Takeover Panel rules merely bring the date cash is required forward by three weeks.  Still, I am sure this talk of bullying will make the Takeover Panel think twice before crossing King again.

This guy is beyond brilliant.  He is behaving like this openly.  You know how it ends.

Everything in that article you provided may well be true but to suggest that there hasn’t been an increase in overt anti-semitism in the current manifestation of the Labour Party is, imo, simply obtuse. The far left may not be as bad as the far right but they exhibit it.

Corbyn hasn’t helped himself in the matter, imo. He has obfuscated and even attended a gathering with a Jewish group that other Jews repudiate. Odd, imo.

As for McDonnel being a former seminarian, I don’t see why that is germane to what I perceive as Labour’s view of faith communities.

  2. So a priest gets attacked in Glasgow in broad daylight in 2018 by mutants from the Lardy Gras.

And not a peep from the national broadcaster. Nothing changes.

Same people who described Crystal Nacht as a small minority of undesirables breaking a few windaes.

Nothing to see. Nothing to report.

And uber-bint, nad-numbing Arlene Foster is welcomed at another open-air Orc Kulchur-fest in Fife.

    Move on, Scotland; towards 1691.

I might be in a minority but should the Sassenach win the big one then the domestic game would get a huge boost at grassroots level the whole way up. Attendences would increase . More youth would be given a chance. The World Cup would be played in England or both islands even. ( surely thats good? )

That would also help us hold onto players no as teams put more belief in their own rather than buying proven from us?

Or would the new found fame bring even more riches to the already mega premier league and enable us to ask for more as they have never been soo flush?

While Im at it, Liverpool lifting the title would be very very good for that league and if Everton are smart they could fill Arsenals spot in the top 6.

Vfr,,,there is a legal self defence spray ( like bear spray ). If these parades arent banned theres a case coming to be held in the wee room at the back, just incase.

“It is also a legal requirement for a local authority to consult the police before making an order which prevents a procession from taking place or places conditions on it”

Councils have little or no power over Orange Walks, if the organisers give 28 days notice then the only responsibility they have is to pay for it. I recounted a while back how a Committee voted 3-2 to allow an Orange March in Perth despite none in over twenty years. Three senior Police Officers attended that meeting. Edinburgh washed it’s hands over Orange walks in 2006 (Police, Public Order and Criminal Justice Act), leaving Councils powerless, and PoliceScotland all powerful. The Police will not oppose a march taking place, they may recommend a different route, but as Glasgow shows no routes are out of bounds. Even Northern Ireland is more democratic. The 1936 Public Order Act should apply, but even then the onus is on the Police, who refuse to consider it. Do not expect action from spineless politicians in Edinburgh, and do not expect fair and just consideration from a reactionary PoliceScotland!

Now, if the priest had spat on a marcher, THAT would have been a story…

Corbyn accepted an invitation from Jewdas to celebrate Passover with them. And for this he is criticised for being anti Semitic. That’s Alice in Wonderland stuff.

Funny we didn’t hear from the people now alleging anti Semitism when Milliband was leader. Remember the photos of him eating a bacon sandwich, the snide remarks about his house having two kitchens, and newspaper articles questioning his father’s loyalty to Britain?

The narrative about anti Semitism being rife in the Labour Party is being pushed by a mixture of Blairites, who detest Corbyn and all he stands for, Tories, for the same reason and ardent Zionists who equate any criticism of Israel with Anti Semitism.

Jewdas are great at winding up the UK Jewish Establishment. They are even better at winding up Zionists with the suggestion that there is a lot more to Jewish culture than Israel

  8. The Police and the Media’s inference is that it will only be a crime if it was the OO March that spat at Canon Tom. Totally irrelevant in my opinion, had the Orange Zombies not been marching past it may never have happened, of course it was a follower of the Orange Zombies. Even if it was not it is still a racially aggrevated breach of the peace. An absolutely abhorrent attack and should be condemned by the Police, MSM, MSPs et al, regardless of who committed it, nobody has yet condemned the act but I am not surprised as we live in a bigoted Country, especially in the West. Absolutely disgusted.

” especially in the West. ”

I would say it was just more blatant in the West ( Do you mean the Glasgow.Ayrshire area? Ullapool, Torridon etc seem quite fine !). It is more insidious in the East but it still exists.

Concerns have already been raised by Liverpool about the way Brendan Rodgers’ side used loan signings last season.

The Celtic boss snapped up Patrick Roberts from Manchester City and Charly Musonda from Chelsea but both found their opportunities limited. Musonda was recalled just six months into his 18-month loan due to a lack of playing

    This shite from the DR….

  12. A quick update. Canon Tom has been at London Rd Police Station today after being interviewed at length last night, and has made the point that this is not a minor incident.

He described the attack (because that is what it was) to both congregations attending St Mary’s and St Alphonsus today. He has been asked to do a TV interview with BBC and he will be on Radio Scotland live at 8:20 tomorrow morning.

This story is getting significant coverage now. The Orange Order have also commented saying they would work with Police Scotland to identify those responsible but have stated categorically that no member of the parade was involved. ??

All 3 main political parties have commented and Nicola Sturgeon has described it as a hate crime.

St Mary’s & St Alphonsus Parish Councils will meet tomorrow evening to determine how the Parish Faith Community will formally respond and how we will take it to elected representatives to deal with.

In the meantime, those who feel they are of a mind to bring it to the attention of their own elected representatives, please do so.

The harsh reality is that in 2018 it is unsafe for Catholics to be seen practising their religion and it is unsafe for a Priest to be on the streets of Glasgow without Police protection.

    KEEP THE FAITH x 2

  13. Friesdorfer

I agree it is not encountered in the blatant way it was in the Glasgow of my youth but, as I said , it exists insidiously in the easy acceptance of , for example, the many Masonic Lodges ( I used to drink in one of them !!) and I believe this kind of Societal More would be found in any examination of the employment demographic.

Anyway, generally speaking, something with which i ma not too bothered but a combination of feeling under the weather and the posts on the Orange Walks irritated me. I1ll be back to my more relaxed self soon. See you on the bus for the Livi game when we chaperone M`s daughter :-)

    Cheerio for now,

…Police said the priest was not injured and stressed they have not yet established a link between the incident and the march…

What the feck…there is clearly a link between the incident and the march, whether it was someone who was actively involved with march or one of the Sheep followers. When was the last time such an attack took place in or around St. Alphonsus’s Church or any Church for that matter when an OO March was not taking place! People are correct such marches should not be allowed anywhere near Churches.

    Thanks for the link.

  16. Typical now politicians of every hue now jumping on the band wagon to condemn the assault on Cannon Tom. Took their own good time, about as long as it took our national broadcaster to deem it a news worthy item. Meanwhile blogs like CQN were all over it within a couple of hours of the incident occurring. I still maintain that had this been an attack on a Jewish or Muslim religious gathering our politicians would have been rugby tackling each other to ensure they were 1st on camera outside the place of worship. Cynical – aye too right I am and who could blame me in this country.

Orange order saying no member of the parade attacked the priest, no shite sherlock – really – but what about all the drunken union jack / fake Hummel shirt bedecked mob that you encourage to follow your parade

  18. Didn’t the OO force the Aberdeen city council to allow them to parade down Aberdeen’s Union street sometime in the early to mid 1980’s. If I can recall the ACC didn’t want to allow this to take place but were forced to do so. Anyway parade takes place a few dozen of her majesties loyal but extremely over weight supporters and a couple of bands head off down Union street only for the majority of the good citizens of Aberdeen to turn their backs on them. As far as I am aware the OO haven’t been back since.

  19. Ernie Lynch,

My perception was that the Jewish Community generally found it strange that Corbyn chose the group he did at Passover. I’m sure they know more about the Faith than me and where it dovetails with political statements. For that is what it was.

Since Milliband, the Labour Party has changed utterly, in many ways. Imo, that includes anti-semitism. Didn’t they have their own internal investigation which said just that and no action has been taken?

As far as I can see, they have lost the working class in Scotland and they are pandering to the Brexit voting working class in England. When they should be a shoo-in at any general election, they seem to me to doing their best to wander off into the political wilderness.

We may as well end this here as it will just go round in circles. You have your certainties. I have another opinion.

MSP’s are responsible for the legislation that covers, or rather doesn’t, Orange marches anywhere in Scotland. They passed legislation in 2003 and 2006. They passed the buck to local authorities, whilst denying Councils any power to control said marches. PoliceScotland control both the marches and the routes of the marches and can ban any route which includes say, a Catholic Church. Orange marches could and should be covered by the Public Order Act 1936, which local authorities refer to in their guidelines, (inaccurately) but pay lip service to. Edinburgh and Police Scotland are the reponsible parties, Councils merely a rubber stamp for the Lodge. Remember that any time you hear from an MSP or a Senior Police officer.
