Football in July, the brilliant Dave King

1046

Celtic play their fifth and final preseason friendly tomorrow before Tuesday’s Champions League qualifier in Armenia.  Five games feels light.  Legs will still be tired after each game, the prospect of 90 minutes in extreme heat will not be welcome.

Opponents Alashkert will have played only three preseason games before facing Celtic, each against lower league Russian opponents, so while they will cope better with the heat, their underlying fitness will not be better than Celtic’s.

In theory, Tuesday’s game should be welcomed as an opportunity to increase preparedness before the tougher challenges that lie ahead.  But this is football in July, when normal rules do not apply, as Lincoln Red Imps demonstrated two years ago.

Loved the lack of logic in Dave King’s written response to BBC’s Alasdair Lamont’s question on the Takeover Panel’s Contempt of Court proceedings.  “The [Takeover Panel] know that I live in [South Africa] and that it will require exchange control approval to move the funds to London.  They are just bullying me”.

The Takeover Panel’s rules (which exist for everyone) that an offer has to have proven funds in the UK is not an actual impediment.  If King’s funds were not in the UK, he would be unable to pay for the shares three weeks after the offer is made.

Takeover Panel rules merely bring the date cash is required forward by three weeks.  Still, I am sure this talk of bullying will make the Takeover Panel think twice before crossing King again.

This guy is beyond brilliant.  He is behaving like this openly.  You know how it ends.

  1. Mahe, I was down at St Alphonsus for most of yesterday evening and from about 10:30 till 3 today. My wife had discussed whether or not we should have a presence today but I honestly thought those days were gone and thought the Police wouldn’t allow it. Sadly I was mistaken; it’s now unsafe to be a Priest on the streets again!

No problem; I thought someone said you may have something on your phone.

Hopefully some degenerate is stupid enough to have filmed it and posts it on social media!

  3. Hey, my friends/looney tunes are having a discussion on WhatsApp about tonight ….

The latest…. ‘We’ve not gone away you know’….

  4. Heaven help us, James McFadden, Scotland’s assistant manager is not happy with call offs for the controversial games against Mexico & Peru.

In particular he seems to be upset with Kieran Tierney and Andy Robertson.

Andy Robertson was representing Liverpool in the Champions League Final.

Kieran Tierney played 55 games for Celtic and 7 for Scotland. He might have needed a rest/break?

    Then there was the threats!

“I can’t believe there were players that couldn’t make the trip.”

McFadden, 35, continued: “They’ve harmed [their chances] in that aspect but they’ve also harmed it in the players that have come in and done well in their place.

“It’s a new coaching staff, new campaign coming up and we’re looking for players that want to go and play for Scotland, but are also good enough, and if we don’t get a chance to see them, how can we judge them?

“The ones that came in did very well and it’ll be difficult for the ones that pulled out or weren’t there to get back in.”

McFadden singled out Hibs’ Lewis Stevenson and Kilmarnock’s Stephen O’Donnell for praise in defence.

“Lewis Stevenson was excellent, he had a fantastic season and played really well,” McFadden told BBC Scotland. “Stephen O’Donnell played two 90 minutes, and it was a position we were looking for players to step up and he certainly did that.”

Well it sounds like Tierney & Robertson are now surplus to requirements.

    McFadden will go far.

  5. I should have added, Kieran Tierney was kicked up and down the park in many, many games.

  6. King really is up s..t creek.

There’s no way Ashley will give up a deal to JB or whatever.

He’ll be selling their strips until he wants to give it up and then he’ll sell the rights to someone with onerous terms

King’s biggest problem in the short term is if Ashley asks the court to ringfence the £1m capped damages- even though he has no interest in it.

If he does that and they can’t move about 8 players, they’ll struggle to pay August’s wages.

I think John McGinn has 200 1st team appearances, 10 Scotland caps, SC winner, LC winner, a league winner, he’s a big Celtic fan and Celtic and Brendan will imo get easily another 30% from him.

Just spoke at length to Canon Tom. What happened today was horrendous.

His day started at 8:05 with numerous abusive sectarian phone calls which he reported to the Police. After the 4:30 Vigil Mass Canon T was outside as he always is. He had been aware of Police in the Church porch during Mass. they were still there after Mass.

Shortly after he was outside the Dalmarnock, Orange & Purple District No.50 turned off the Gallowgate, down Moir St and left into London Rd past St Alphonsus. They quickly became abusive shouting Fenian Scum, Fenian bastards, Peadophile etc. then there was an incident at Kent St when one of the Police pressed his emergency button and the Police around the Church left to deal with that.

Then the spitting started and the abuse got worse; he was spat on a number of times, one right in his eye. One of them tried to hit him with baton but was restrained.

The Police have interviewed him and seem to be taking it very seriously.

Let’s be clear here: this is a serious assault on a Priest and the Catholic Church; it is also a hate crime. As a Faith it is now unsafe for us to be on the streets at certain times of the year. That is intolerable.

On Monday I will be contact all my elected representatives to highlight this. I hope others do the same!

    ……………

    VFR

Thanks for this – it needs circulating as widely as possible.

Any idea how many assailants & were they members of that named band or hangers on?

I’m assuming the band had no reason to go past other than to cause trouble, and/or that local protocols to NOT do this have been breached.

Terrible news about the assault on the Canon today.

Unfortunately they are Teflon and any evidence will be ‘he said, she said’.

Pity no one had a phonecam going.

I fear nothing will happen…move along Timmy.

    Only in Scotland!

  9. It’s over 40 years since Peter McDougall’s drama ‘Just another Saturday’ exposed the Orange march for what it was and yet the fact that this bigoted abomination is allowed to continue in a so called civilised society tells us all we need to know about who really has the power in bonnie Scotia. Jinky…. agreed

If it does get reported, Shortie will most likely apply the Hun Deflection tactic and describe the event as a “spat” or more likely part of an ongoing “feud”…….that kind of thing allows thum, to deflect the

    uncomfortable reality of scoddlands shame.

  11. Been listening to BBC (or the EBC at its worse)since 6 o’clock. No mention of the assault of Canon White in any bulletin. Shameful.

As for that Sun report of the police: only minor in nature. If anything that is worse. Almost excusing it.

  12. From Gordon64 @ 7:27:

” the fact that this bigoted abomination is allowed to continue in a so called civilised society tells us all we need to know about who really has the power in bonnie Scotia. Hh”

How true. Some of the comments from the police don

  13. `t give much confidence that anything is about to change:

” However cops were unable to confirm the circumstances and say they believe the attack was minor in nature.

It is understood the priest himself has not yet reported the attack to police.

Officers say it is not thought the attacker was taking part in the parade – but also say details have still to be confirmed.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “Police Scotland were made aware that a priest at the Barras was assaulted outside his church around 4.20pm this afternoon.

“The parade was passing the church at the time, however the assault was not believed to be carried out by someone taking part. Details have still to be confirmed.

“Enquiries into the assault, which we believe to be minor in nature, are at a very early stage.”

    Fitba fever –

Italian media reporting that Ciro Immobile was abused and threatened by an Ultra armed with a knife on a Lazio beach yesterday .Seems the Ultra was known to the police and was arrested shortly after..

According to some witness reports -the Ultra was seemingly enraged by the sight of Immobile enjoying himself while proud Italians lived with the shame of having lost to Sweden

  18. BIG-CUP-WINNERS on

    Tut-tut.

So some are pure angry at the SMSM choosing not to report an alleged “minor”, that had “absolutely nothing whatsoever” to do to do with the LOL carnival parade.

Some of you will no doubt be vexed at the only “4 arrests” headlines reported at the Mardi Gras ?

Whilst the shock is brought to you through the internet, there’ll be another tit-bit along to catch your attention until next year’s Orange-fest.

Alternatively, get up off your lazy A*** and do something. You’ll be at a standing start mind, as much as you laugh and deride the LOL over the last few years their leaders have been listening, learning and “working-in-partnership with a variety of stakeholders” to ensure acceptability.

Yeah, it was funny when they launched the wee Orange cartoon character or extol the economic boon to tourism of Orange fest. But it shows they have listened to some criticism and attempted to appear different.

Incidentally, if you approach this from an entrenched (aka sectarian) stand, you are part of the same problem. They cannot and indeed should not be simply banned from the Queen’s highway.

  21. Unless carrying an injury , I can’t understand BR not playing the griff . 40 goals a couple of seasons ago , and a right handful into the bargain , I firmly believe BR is maybe pushing this guy too far , same applies to kouassi (sp) who again is not getting the chances others are getting . I hope the two of them stick with it . I was pleased to hear him mention after the rovers game , that he wants improvement mainly in the defence , which I think is needed , it gives me no pleasure to state we need a right back , Mikel has been a great Celt , but imho needs a wee break now and again . We will meet bigger challenges this season , of that there is no doubt , I have noticed the scouser is going for mostly big 6 foot plus guys , I hope that is another thing BR has noticed , I don’t buy the rags , can anyone tell me if the scouser has a rapport with the Scottish sun , I seem to remember he wouldn,t speak to the English version . Just wondering .

  22. Just as suspected. After all the ‘KT to Everton deal being all but certain’ articles we are now faced with the inevitable ‘Everton think KT not worth £25 mill and deal’ is off pieces in the papers today ‘. Obviously ignoring the fact KT has shown absolutely no inclination of wishing to leave Celtic in the 1st instance. Bizarre how low the standard of sports journalism has fallen in this country.
