From a green jumper to a season ticket

924

It’s one of those obscure football facts which appears more likely to be an urban myth, but when he jogs out onto Celtic Park on Sunday the proof will be there for all to see: Chelsea captain John Terry is a Celtic fan.  I’ve heard many wide ranging reasons why people become attached to the club, not everyone was born into it as an accident of paternal heritage, some of us made our own way there.

I know one Ulsterman, from the loyalist tradition, who has lived in Scotland for decades, and, along with his friends, is a Celtic supporter.  One season ticket holder told me he started shouting for Celtic as an infant, to tease his Rangers supporting father, but one day the teasing developed into the acquisition of a green jumper, an unusual occurrence in the family home.  A bridge had been crossed, soon posters were on the bedroom wall, a Celtic Subbutteo team was bought and after a few years, a Celtic top made its appearance.

There are hundreds, possibly thousands, of great stories like these.

Sunday’s #19 Legenda’ game will be a chance for some of us to reminisce about the days when Pierre, Lubo, Jorge, Bobo, Tommy Boyd, the man himself, Stiliyan Petrov and, of course, the Swede, graced Celtic Park every week.  It will be a rare chance to see Martin O’Neill on the on the touchline, perhaps without bouncing up and down.  Well done to Carlos Cuellar for pitching up, even if he has to play the inevitable pantomime villain.

Monies raised will go towards Stiliyan’s Foundation and to stock a food bank, which will open in Glasgow this month with the aim of alleviating food poverty. Which takes us back to where we started.

Enjoy your day.

Was just saying to my son that the Welsh strip would be a nice Celtic away kit.

  2. I was reading about the Huns moaning about wee Jim Spence telling the truth. The culture of fear and intimidation that the Huns are promoting is really something to behold.

A question though. I note that the latest Huns statement has referred to a previous BBC Trust decision to defend the same club myth. Is this true?

Nuclear in centre mid v OCT couple weeks back was lost. Spent most of match as a spectator with little or no movement. I like him btw just not in middle of the park.

As usual, a half-truth used for propaganda purposes :

    http://www.scotsman.com/sport/football/spfl-lower-divisions/complaints-to-bbc-about-rangers-reporting-upheld-1-2970152

  5. Add to that – in modern Scotland – the ignoring of clear evidence of corruption, the vilification of the whistleblower and the introduction of a new law designed to outlaw elements of Catholicism and celtic supporters – backed up by the police promising to smash a legal and law abiding group.

And they want us to vote for independence

BBC Scotland said it stood by the accuracy of its reporting, but noted the Trust’s decision.

“We remain of the opinion that due accuracy was achieved,” a statement read.

“A football club, once incorporated, is indistinguishable in Scots law from its corporate identity.

“If the club was separate it would need its own constitution, committee members, trustees, etc.

“Rangers Football Club does not have that because it is incorporated.”

    On becoming a celtic fan:))

Heard a young jambo came to a game with his wee pals as guests of the brilliant TKF, went home and told his parents to redecorate his room with the Hooooooops.

  8. Nat know – thanks for that. It’s still a remarkable decision by the BBC trust. Where they claiming that it is the same club? It doesn’t seem so but the response itself is clearly designed to be vague.

  9. just been reading the views of cqn posters regarding john terry and sundays game you can be sure the msm will have their headlines ready for Monday morning jt abused at charity match by celtic fans they will include the words ex England and Chelsea hopeing for a zombie sales fest hope he swops shirts at the end and walks off wearing the hoops that would put most of the zombies over the edge if they are not there by now

I don’t think the Trust are claiming that Neganon – only that the wording used in the reporting could have been more accurate. However, as you can see, the BBC reporting department are adamant that they got the accuracy correct. That’s how I read it anyway.

The bottom line is that the only people who get vexed about the question are the huns who are desperately trying to convince everyone that the club and company are different. There are too many examples we could use to show they are not!

I just hope that the BBC stands by their journalist and stands up for freedom of speech and against intimidation and bullying.

Ta Nat Know – so another Hun FACT then?

Ha! Like the word “sectarian” they seek to re-define the word “fact” on a continuous basis to suit this week’s agenda!

  14. Totally agree my fellow corkonian, anyone giving any player the bird on Sunday will be doing a huge disservice to the Celtic.

Are you heading to the All Ireland this Sunday. I’ve got my ticket, can’t wait.
