Gamboa, McCarthyism

1073

Celtic were looking for a right back throughout the second half of last term, but in the early weeks of his tenure, Brendan considered Mikael Lustig and Saidy Janko sufficient for the season ahead. Mikael is four years into a successful Celtic career but his fitness issues are of a persistent nature. We’ve reached Peak Swede.

Saidy missed lot of last season, also through injury, but he showed potential in his early outing this term. Aspirations for the lad crystallised in Israel last week, but not in a good way. I’m not going to defend him, because he was unquestionably poor, but agreement only exists on his poor showing because he was prepared to receive the ball so often. Not everyone in black that night was as keen to get on the end of a pass.

That opened the door for Cristian Gamboa, 26, second choice right back for West Brom. We’re very keen, apparently. West Brom manager, Tony Pulis, is less in need of a full back whose key attribute is getting forward at speed. Horses for course, I suppose, West Brom face different challenges than Celtic.

Two rumours have circulated this week: Celtic are looking for a midfield player and James McCarthy’s position at Everton is less secure than it was a year ago. Whoever has been linking these two facts has overreached – or made them up. Celtic have no idea where this one came from but were clear, there’s nothing in it.  Getting the right midfielder remains a task in hand, but usual caveats apply.  There are no guarantees we’ll land all our targets this summer.

My first celtic strip was the all green one. Then I got hoops with the green and white hopped socks.

Always fancied getting the shamrock strip when I was wee but didn’t know anyone who had it.

Now you can buy it but I am too old to wear celtic tops.

Mrs. Ggh has spoken on that topic on a number of occasions.

  2. Up onto my soapbox…..

Our primary change strip should incorporate RED and GREEN…..to reflect the colours of the first badge on the first strip.

I will of course keep banging on about this until it happens :-D

  3. There is a great picture of Jinky when he was about 16 with the Shamrock strip on.I think the one he had on belonged to Big Yogi !!!!!!.Around 14 sizes too big for him.Looks like,as my auld Ma would say, like a “Poor Orphan”.

  4. What rule book?

BOTH clubs are in the dock following the chaos of the Scottish Cup Final pitch invasion but the SFA charges only relate to damage caused to Hampden.

THE SFA’S rulebook has been made to look a laughing stock after Hibs and Rangers were put in the dock – for smashing up advertising boards.

Compliance officer Tony McGlennan has finally issued his notice of complaint following the scenes of violence and chaos that marred the Scottish Cup final in May.

Astonishingly, the clubs are being jointly cited only for the damage caused to LED screens and advertising hoardings around the perimeter of the pitch, estimated at hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The Easter Road club have also been rapped because their fans ripped up sections of the turf and damaged goal posts as they celebrated their first win in the tournament in 114 years.

GettyThe Hampden Park pitch as well as advertising hoardings, right, were damaged

Incredibly, Hibs will face no action from the football authorities for the misbehaviour of their fans, who attacked Rangers players on the pitch after the game.

They will face no punishment for the fact thousands of their supporters invaded the pitch, initially in celebration at their side’s 3-2 victory, before hundreds ran to goad Rangers fans.

The Ibrox club will face no censure for the response of their fans, hundreds of whom came over the wall to confront their rivals, with fights breaking out on the pitch.

Rangers will also escape a rap after their fans sang banned anthem the Billy Boys in defiance as the Hibs fans approached their end of the ground.

Rangers refused to comment, while Hibs have been approached but have so far not responded.

GettyThe Hampden pitch was damaged during the invasion

The SFA have also been approached, but were unavailable. One source said: “There is nothing in the SFA’s articles of association that allows them to deal with offensive behaviour. It’s really quite bizarre.”

McGlennan has cited Hibs and Rangers for allegedly breaching Rule 28 of the Scottish Cup competition stating that damage was sustained to Hampden as “a consequence of misbehaviour by supporters of your club.”

For Hibs, it adds that: “In the course of this misbehaviour by your supporters damage was sustained to the stadium, as follows:

    1) To the surface of the pitch, portions of which were removed; and/or

    2) To a set of goal posts which were broken and had netting removed; and/or

    3) To parts of the LED advertising system situated at the perimeter of the pitch, in the vicinity of both the East Stand, and/or the North Stand; and/or

    4) To advertising hoardings situated at the perimeter of the pitch, in the vicinity of the East Stand.”

GettyHibs fans damaged the goalposts at Hampden ParkHibs fans damaged the goalposts at Hampden Park

Rangers fans did not cause damage to the pitch or goalposts, McGlennan has ruled but, like Hibs, they are still being held responsible for damage to the advertising system and hoardings at their end of Hampden.

Both clubs have until Tuesday, September 6 to provide a written response to the alleged breaches. The case against Hibs will be heard on October 4 while Rangers’ case will be discussed 24 hours later.

I can remember seeing that picture. Never saw first team wear the strip. Did see photograph of the first team wearing it posing with the league cup before a home match after the 7-1 game.

Didn’t travel to many away games in 60s. My da took me to see reserves a lot and I did see them wear it.

As someone once said — if you some people enough rope bad things will happen.

I was in a very similar position so I looked at the pile of albums sitting beside the turntable (I know, I should put them away) and worked out that I play those than any others; then sorted into the top 10.

Others in the pile were Bob Marley and the Wailers Live; Hats (Blue Nile); Ziggy Stardust, Heroes and Station to Station (Bowie); Highway 61, Desire and Street Legal (Dylan); The Division Bell and Endless River (Floyd), Jake Bugg and Shangri La (Jake Bugg).

    “it’s only a name”

Yeah, it doesn’t matter, it’s not as if keeping the same name helps in any way whatsoever with the survival/continuity myth, does it?

And I suppose the 1986 Insolvency Act is totally irrelevant too, especially the section on prohibited names.

“A prohibited name is a name by which the liquidated company was known at any time in the 12 months immediately before the liquidation: whether this is it’s registered name at Companies House or its trading name, or ANY NAME SO SIMILAR ( my caps) to its registered or trading name as to suggest an association with the liquidated company ”

So, Sevco it is then, as it’s the only name they’ve had which doesn’t breach the Act.

Surely our club is not condoning law-breaking?

  15. Kill Ultra

You have made repeated attacks on some very well respected and long standing posters on here. One is BRTH. You state that you have evidence on your laptop which will make us all re-think things re Res12.

Your position is that BRTH is a plant for CelticPLC who was put into Res12 to make sure it failed.

You claim to be a Celtic supporter. If you are and you have such evidence on your computer what is your intention regarding this material and why would a Celtic supporter not share this with his fellow supporters?

You said you did not contribute to the various newspaper initiatives which I organised and crowd funded on here. If you have this evidence you could have saved us all a great deal of time and money by revealing it.

You clearly care about this issue. You have written about it on here often and also pursued Auldheid earlier this month over on Scottish Football Monitor before the host there brought the conversation to an end.

If you have evidence why not reveal it? You have attacked a poster of very high standing on here repeatedly. If you are right why not tell us?

If you want to email the evidence to me to review, my email is david@cqnpublishing.co.uk

If you don’t want to do this or if you don;t want to post the evidence on here, as you have been asked to do by the Res12 guys, then what do you hope to achieve?

I think you should tell us?

  18. Re the change of strip discussion from earlier…

The first time I recall Celtic changing their strip in an away game was at Hampden v Queens Park in the quarter final of the Scottish Cup in 1965. I think that may well have been the first time we wore that particular strip (no number on the back).

We also wore a white top and black shorts in the 1926 Scottish Cup final v St Mirren.

I know we did not play in the shamrock strip in the 7-1 game, however the team was photographed displaying the trophy in that strip. As next year is the 60th anniversary of that record -breaking victory it may be an idea for the “designers” at New Balance to consider a modern version.

  26. Amidst all the childishness on here (a lot of it emanating from people who clearly have more time on their hands than the gainfully employed should; I wonder if that means they ARE at work?) I see a major musical discussion going on about best bands and albums.

I’ve inflicted my tastes on my Facebook friends enough times! I have no qualms about doing it here!

    Best album ever? Easy one.

69 Love Songs, by The Magnetic Fields.

Shame on you Philistines for not having mentioned it already!

Artistic, brilliant, beautiful, occasionally hilarious, written in full by Stephen Merritt, one of the coolest song-writers of the 20th century. (He’s a moaning faced git when doing interviews; it’s really something to see and hear!)

Too many good songs from it to choose a favourite (there are 69 of them haha) but Epitaph for My Heart, Papa Was A Rodeo, Asleep & Dreaming, Busby Berkley Dreams, I Don’t Believe In The Sun and a few others are absolutely top drawer and nearly perfect. Acoustic Guitar is absolutely perfect, from the song itself to the lyrics which a lot of you budding song writers will understand perfectly.

The first song I heard from this album was a tune called All My Little Words, which is a superb wee piece of work, but the one that hooked me was I Don’t Want To Get Over You.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WVEhNHIzJec&list=RDVlLvT_R5X7w&index=13

A lot of people think that’s a depressing song. The live version is very morose. But it’s clear he never intended it to be a weepy … after all, he gave it such a catchy tune :)
