Gamboa, McCarthyism

1073

Celtic were looking for a right back throughout the second half of last term, but in the early weeks of his tenure, Brendan considered Mikael Lustig and Saidy Janko sufficient for the season ahead. Mikael is four years into a successful Celtic career but his fitness issues are of a persistent nature. We’ve reached Peak Swede.

Saidy missed lot of last season, also through injury, but he showed potential in his early outing this term. Aspirations for the lad crystallised in Israel last week, but not in a good way. I’m not going to defend him, because he was unquestionably poor, but agreement only exists on his poor showing because he was prepared to receive the ball so often. Not everyone in black that night was as keen to get on the end of a pass.

That opened the door for Cristian Gamboa, 26, second choice right back for West Brom. We’re very keen, apparently. West Brom manager, Tony Pulis, is less in need of a full back whose key attribute is getting forward at speed. Horses for course, I suppose, West Brom face different challenges than Celtic.

Two rumours have circulated this week: Celtic are looking for a midfield player and James McCarthy’s position at Everton is less secure than it was a year ago. Whoever has been linking these two facts has overreached – or made them up. Celtic have no idea where this one came from but were clear, there’s nothing in it.  Getting the right midfielder remains a task in hand, but usual caveats apply.  There are no guarantees we’ll land all our targets this summer.

I hope we are working hard behind the scenes to bring some Champions League quality to the team today.

Some additional strength in midfield should give us a shot at third place in the group and a run in the Europa Cup post Christmas.

I don’t see that as being an unrealistic target.

    Re DOC and PAPAJOE55

Way I read it,PAPAJOE55 came on to refute allegations that KILL ULTRA is not a Celtic supporter. And that they both know each other well, and for a long time.

Nothing wrong there,we all need back up when wrongly accused. In fact, well done!

I’m clearly in a minority on this, but I think DOC is quite right to have chased down PAPAJOE55. All he ever asked was to provide proof of that, and of his own credentials. I genuinely don’t know why PAPAJOE55 refused to do that, but that is where the whole argument came from.

Re PAPAJOE55 suffering from ME,he has my utmost sympathy-(you do,mate. Look after yourself)-but using it as a stick to beat DOC is very unfair as it was only revealed late in the discussion.

I hope you guys kiss and make up on 24/9. As for your ME,I’m sure you are in the best of hands. If any CQNers have advice on it,I reckon PAPAJOE55 would appreciate it.

That’s the point though isn’t it. It’s a myth and I reckon that those that chose to believe it would do so regardless of the name. However the whole discussion began because somebody took umbrage at our Club calling them “Rangers”.

Like it or not they’re legally called “The Rangers Football Club Ltd”. I simply can’t lose sleep over it being shortened to “Rangers”.

I think out of context that could be a valid viewpoint; however Papajoe55 and Kill Ultra have been asked very specific and easy to answer questions over the past 2 nights and declined to do so.

In context, the Res 12 guys have been put under some very severe scrutiny, intimidation and threatening behaviour, particularly WC it seems.

Now I have never (to my knowledge) met WC, the other requistioners, Papajo55 or Kill Ultra so I have no axe to grind either way; BUT if Kill Ultra has the evidence as he says, then he should be willing to share it (securely and privately) with those involved in the Res 12 process UNLESS he has an agenda which he is unwilling to disclose; if Papajoe5 can easily (and safely) verify his and Kill Utlra’s identities then that would be a very simple solution to the problem UNLESS he has an agenda which he is unwilling to disclose.

By doing so the “is he/isn’t he a Tim/hun” question could be easily answered and the animosity that has been prevalent on the board over the last 2 nights could very easily dissipate.

Or am I being too simplistic? (Clue: that’s a rhetorical question.)

The only way Rangers(1872-2012) was able to dump over 80 million pounds of debt was to stop being Rangers.

What an insult to the 276 creditors for a new club to adopt the name and all the good parts ( as they see it), while ignoring such massive debt, and carrying on regardless.

It’s beyond me why the creditors, especially the larger ones like HMRC don’t use the section of the Insolvency Act which I quoted to protest and highlight this injustice and insult to everyone’s intelligence.

Don’t get me wrong I actually agree with you that they shouldn’t have been allowed to use that name.

However they were, and as I said the original discussion was somebody taking issue with Celtic referring to them as “Rangers”. I don’t have an issue with that.

Then there’s the whole other discussion of whether it strengthens the myth. It does but it’s still a myth.

Then there’s whether they’d materially be any different even if the name had been changed more dramatically. I happen to think not, because a huge section (majority?) expend as much energy hating us, as they do supporting TRFC. So I tend to think they’d follow the new team anyway, have the same ‘traditions’ and ultimately bring the same venom to CP.

Beatboy, the section of the Liquidation Act you quite relates to the names of the Companies that ran Rangers Football Club (1872 to 2012) and The Rangers (2012 till present).

The names Rangers/The Rangers are those by which the old and new clubs were/are known in the footballing arena; therefore it’s why Celtic use that name.

As for why it’s Rangers rather than The Rangers that is used; that will be in a similar to our use of Hearts and Hibs rather Heart of Midlothian and Hibernian.

Garygillespie and others…the shamrock strip was not an ‘away’ strip…remember, in those days telly was black and white, so for example, when we played Kilmarnock whose strip was blue and white hoops, not stripes, it would have been almost impossible to distinguish between the two teams, only the socks were different. Also, in those days, as a courtesy, it was the home team who changed. Hence, when we played Killie at Rugby Park, we wore the hoops while they wore a change strip and at Celtic Park we wore the shamrock one. So, as you can see, it wasn’t worn very often but certainly always against Killie at home… cheers guys…

Morning all. Really happy with the signings so far. Looks like BR has a plan and is buying players to fit into that plan, a long time since that has happened at CP. The fact that Gamboa was second choice at WBA says more about that league than anything else. Most teams are concerned with survival, entertainment is secondary, the football really is hard to watch. Also, I was at the Liverpool/Man Ure Europa league game last year, the guest of one of the sponsors. It was my second big European game involving English teams (was at the Man City/Barca game in 2014 as a guest of another sponsor). I was looking forward o both games, at the stage of the year both were probably the biggest games of the season for the clubs, and was imagining they would be similar to big European games at CP. Dear God was I disappointed! I don’t know if it is a consequence of the way football is run in England now but both atmospheres were dire. It made me think, coming away, if this is what being part of the “greatest league in the world” means , I want no part of it for Celtic. Sometimes we don’t appreciate what we have and how unique our club really is
