Gang of 10 plan creates 41 winners and only one loser

983

Q. There will be 12 teams in the SPL next season.  How many do you think stand to gain from the redistribution of income proposed by the Gang of 10?

A. 11.

Q. There will be 30 teams in the SFL next season.  How many do you think stand to gain from the redistribution of income proposed by the Gang of 10?

A. 30.

Although TV and commercial money will be diluted, it is a sideshow compared to the real cash cow remaining in Scottish football, the gate money at Celtic Park.  The Gang of 10 refused to exclude this option from their proposed change in voting rights.

A 20% share of gate money doesn’t have sufficient support from SPL clubs, too many losers.  A 30% gate share only has one loser, everyone else wins, including the club who took 87 fans to a league game at Celtic Park last season.

This is nothing to do with Sevco, who are unlikely to pull a financially viable plan together (although the SPL and SFA are still trying).  You’re being asked to open your wallets and pay for the upkeep of 42 stadiums, squads, boards of directors and kit men.

This is not a viable plan.  It’s time for Scottish football to admit defeat.  Sport has been subverted for over a decade to the point there is nothing left.  We can keep Hampden and the national team going, but there is no viable league structure.  The sooner we accept this and move on the better.

Cry havoc and loose the dogs of war.

Had the insitution or is it asylum that is Rangers shown any sign of admission of the extent of their wrongdoing and apologised to the victims of it, then a SPL2 solution along with the other consequences that need to be allowed ie., removal of titles, paying football debt, no UEFA competition for 3 yrs (this applies regardless bw) then the removal ( NOT relegation) to one division lower would have been easier to accept.

Instead we are asked to accept a solution that suggests not only can they break the rules and walk away with consequences no other club would benefit from, but as an uncontrite entity they can do what they please in future with no fear of consequences that would deter them.

This is a massive fup by the SPL and SFA and I hope the victims tell the uncorrected to gtf until such times as they have learned that wrongdoing on the scale they have indulged means their end, not spawning as you were one division lower.

What follows is a detailed line-by-line rebuttal of a document alleged to have been sent to every clyb in the Scottish Football League. This document is a repellent, fear manufacturing blunt instrument designed to batter the individual clubs into oblivion. It is also transparently thin, loaded with assumptions and presumptions, selective use of the facts and even outright lies.

It is to be condemned by every person interested in the well-being of the national game.

THE PROPOSAL TO SFL CLUBS, TITLED “YOUR GAME, YOUR CLUB, YOUR FUTURE

If this proposal is accepted “Your Game” becomes a loaded, rigged game. “Your Club” severs its links with its own supporters sharply and possibly forever and “Your Future” becomes more uncertain than at any time in the history of the sport.

WHY DOES RESISTANCE TO CHANGE IN FOOTBALL EXIST?

A loaded question which serves one function only; to pretend that this is a document which offers a hopeful solution, and not one which kills the game stone dead.

    •Fear of the unknown

Like who drew this document up, on what basis does it draw its conclusions, who voted to send it out and who signed off on it in the first place? There are a lot of unknowns regarding the potential collapse of Rangers. None are addressed herein.

    •Lack of involvement

The people who’s involvement is being ignored here are the fans. And that is why this document stinks to high heaven. The threats contained within it include excluding clubs for involvement in the decision making process entirely … shameful.

    •Lack of information

Lack of information is a bad thing. This document offers wild speculation, not real hard nosed information based on the monetary facts. This is a propaganda document. If this is supposed to be the stuff of constructive debate it insults everyone.

    •Threat to power, or status

The power and status of Rangers is at threat. This is what is driving this move. If it succeeds, the power and status of Rangers is assured, forevermore, to the detriment of everyone who has any connection with the Scottish game.

    •No perceived benefits

Such perceived benefits have to be based on reality. What is in this document is not.

    •Fear of failure

If this is designed to save Scottish football, the failure will be the most colossal in history.

    •Unless behaviour changes, nothing changes

Surely a joke. Surely. Because what this document will do is encourage Rangers’ recklessness and arrogance to a hitherto unseen level. It will not deter them, or other clubs, because it contains not one iota of punishment or acknowledgement or acceptance of sins past. This is the point, where reading, that I became convinced whoever drafted this (on a tea break I would hope, because God forbid serious work went into this joke) was having a laugh.

    UNDERSTANDING RESISTANCE TO CHANGE

I understand it just fine. Rangers is dead. The NewCo is looking for a home. Changing the entire national football structure to accommodate the club which forced the gravest crisis in our history upon is a disgrace. That’s why there is resistance.

    •Perceptions of being “worse off”

One club will be materially damaged in an irrevocable way if the present rules are applied. That club is Rangers. Every other club in the SPL will be disadvantaged to one degree or another in the first year, perhaps the second. Very few clubs outside the SPL would be hurt if Rangers actually ceased to exist at all. We’ll get back to that one.

•If the reasons for change are not clear

The reasons for these proposed changes are very clear indeed. In a document outlining hope for the future of all the other clubs the overwhelming focus is on the betterment, well being and survival of one club in particular. And it’s not Dumbarton. Therein lies the reason for these changes in a nutshell … and brings shame on whoever drafted this.

•If implementation plans are not clear

These proposals open up a minefield of difficulties, potential litigation and compromise the whole future of the game. Quite how it can all be implemented in five weeks is a mystery.

•If there is no clear “link” with your own objectives

There is a clear link to the objective, at least. The well-being of Rangers.

•If a change is seen as a threat to your long term security or well being

One we agree with. These changes are a direct threat to the long term security and well being of the whole of the Scottish game, and should be resisted, and rejected, forthwith.

WE THEREFORE NEED SOME CLEAR COMMUNICATION PRIORITIES FOR THE SFL

The start of the lecturing. Whoever put this together, it was NOT the SFL. At last, we come to it.

•Logical and positive communication to eliminate doubt, threat and insecurity

This document is a positive communication? We’ll soon find out. In truth, it contains more threats and threatens more insecurity than it will ever alleviate.

•Fully explained in terms of short and long term benefits to you and the organisation

This is a blatant lie. What you are about to read is one of the most distorted, one sided pieces of documentation ever put out by a serious organisation to its stakeholders.

•Not left to the last minute

See below. These are best folded together. The fact they are separate shows that the writer was in one big hurry to make this sound official … but without having the first clue. This is a hallmark of a rush job … ironic, isn’t it ?

•Involving you at an early stage

There are less than six weeks to go until the football season starts. A cup draw has already been made which will be impacted either way. If the drafter is telling us this is consultation at an early stage he or she is on magic mushrooms. This is the most hastily cobbled together piece of trash I have ever read put out by a professional body.

•And seen in the context of a wider strategic plan

If this succeeds there is no scope, hope for, or prospect of, a wider strategic plan because this rewards malignant behaviour, corruption and enshrines this as a period of dark scandal in the history of the game from which there is no possible recovery. It is a short term measure to benefit one club, bribing all the rest with stuff which, if there WAS a strategic plan, could have been implemented years ago.

    CURRENT REALITY

And here we begin with the lies, under the pleasant guise of explaining “reality.” You could not make this up if you tried.

•Rangers have no where to go

Two lies for the price of one. Rangers is dead. They have no place to go because that is what happens to dead clubs. If this is a reference to the NewCo they do have a place to go; where anyone else would go starting a new club – the Third Division.

•SPL Clubs have indicated their voting intentions

They have indeed. Some of them anyway. These proposals would actually prevent that decision being implemented and remove it from their hands.

•SFA wish to see a solution in the interests of the game

If by the SFA you mean the organisation which is headed by a former director of Rangers who was a beneficiary of the EBT scheme, I would suggest we ignore that. If he was serious he would have resigned, if for no other reason than it deprives someone like me of the chance to write something like this; the organisation he heads is subverting the common good of the game for the interests of the club at which he was a director, and which, according to him, he is in hock to. In other words, they are fundamentally corrupt as long as he is in charge.

    •Moral/sporting question vs financial collapse

Correct me if I am wrong, but this IS a sport, and THAT should be paramount. If this is a business like any other, you would not treat the customers with such appalling disregard, and virtually dare them to vote with their feet. That ASSURES financial collapse. An appalling statement, which is a complete distortion of the truth.

•Are The SFL are in a position to accommodate a solution?

Yes. NewCo must apply for membership like every other club, and be treated accordingly.

    WE HAVE CONSIDERED FIVE SCENARIOS

Who is “we” here? Who are the writers of this document? From this point, I will take this section by section, and address the points as they come.

    1.Rangers stay in SPL

    2.Rangers to Third Division

    3.Rangers to First Division

    4.Rangers to SPL2

    5.Rangers terminated or suspended

First, all of these options uses the generic term “Rangers”, when the entity they appear to be referring to does not exist. Rangers “stay in the SPL” is a misnomer because right now there is no football club (as defined in the SFA membership criteria) in that league at present, as Charles Green himself has pointed out time and again … and this very document highlights in its bizarre assertion that “Rangers have nowhere to go.”

    1. RANGERS STAY IN SPL

    •Not an option

    •SPL clubs have indicated no

A distortion of the facts. The SPL clubs, if given the chance, at a vote, will reject an application to transfer the deceased Rangers’ share to a brand new entity. That is not the same thing.

    2. RANGERS TO THIRD DIVISION

NewCo to Third Division, you mean.

•Takes approximately £16 million out of the game

I wonder if this is true. If so, it is the first genuine fact we have heard on the financial consequence of NewCo being put in the bottom tier. Let’s examine it.

Over the course of the three years, this amounts to £5.3 million per year. If this was a distribution amongst SPL clubs only, it would amount to less than half a million each – much less than the worst case scenarios we were told about. If it is between all the clubs in the land … it comes to £124,000 per club, or thereabouts. Will every club lose that amount of money? How would clubs in the lower leagues POSSIBLY lose that much cash? This document, more and more, looks like one drawn up by someone at the SPL … and I wonder who that could be?

•Commercial partners walk away and seek compensation

Is this true? Compensation for what exactly? This is arrant nonsense. Which commercial partner has walked away from Scottish football, or indicated that they are likely to? If some have made it known they are willing to do so, why have they not been named? Isn’t it in the interests of fans – in the spirit of the openness talked about earlier – and clubs to know this? Name, shame or keep such ridiculous assertions for the Daily Record.

•The settlement agreement becomes a major risk

What settlement agreement? To what does this refer? Oh you mean the restructuring of the game is at risk if the Rangers/Newco section is voted down?

•The sporting opportunity is quashed for other clubs

Absolutely undiluted urine. The “sporting opportunity” is quashed? Again, this sounds like a threat to derail all the positive aspects of these “reforms” if NewCo does not get what it wants. This is direct commercial and sporting coercion and shows this document up for the sham that it is. The opportunity for First Division clubs to win that league will be crushed, and the idea of sport itself will take a fatal hit if these proposals go through.

    3. RANGERS TO FIRST DIVISION

No such club. But I digress. Here comes the rationale …

•Reduces SPL income by approximately 30%

Why should this matter to SFL clubs, even if it’s true?

•Balances short term need for redemption with a least worst case financial scenario

Who wrote this crap? Short term need for redemption? Redemption for who?

•It is financially possible to recover from this scenario

It’s what? Financially possible to recover? Are we talking about a nuclear strike here? Are you saying Scottish football will DIE if NewCo ends up anywhere else? Are you saying it will be financially IMPOSSIBLE to recover in that case? Cause that is sheer brassneck lying if ever I have heard it. It reduces the whole of Scottish football to a two team affair.

    4. RANGERS TO SPL2

No such club, and no such league! What the Hell is this even on here for? To set this up would take longer than six weeks, longer than a year, and would dynamite every commercial contract you claim to be seeking to protect. A total non-starting event.

•Currently not supported by the SFA

No, and not likely to be. Ever.

    •Creates a bigger divide

And yet STV news has been briefed that this is being discussed with smaller clubs threatened.

•Leads to some short term commercial losses

As does treating Rangers like every other club, and making them start again.

•A legal challenge could paralyse the game

Likely to happen in any road if these proposals, or any like them, are voted through.

•The overall pot would be much less than anticipated

Of course. This would be a calamitous idea in every way, which is why it remains nothing more than idle speculation and a media fantasy. This entire section reeks of Neil Doncaster’s aftershave. It signifies, again, that this is a proposal from him in all but name.

    5. RANGERS TERMINATED OR SUSPENDED

As they should have been before they died. This scenario also, presumably, applies if a NewCo license is not granted (and it shouldn’t be) or if they plainly and simply can’t get their act together in time to even start the season.

    •Complete financial meltdown

Sheer nonsense. The lower leagues exist separate from all this, relying on fans spending money at the gate. They would not miss NewCo, or Rangers, if the stadium collapsed and was bulldozed.

    •Settlement agreement is obliterated

So crucial changes to Scottish football are dead.

•Fans are lost to the game forever

The fans who are being ignored and spat on with the very existence of these proposals you mean? Who will CERTAINLY be lost to the game forever if these proposals are accepted. Of course, you could just mean NewCo fans … and let’s be brutal – who will miss the sectarian bile, bigotry, arrogance, hate, ego and shame they bring on this nation?

    •The game survives but where?

Ahem … presumably everywhere but the Ibrox Asda.

WE HAVE CONSIDERED THE FIVE SCENARIOS 1 Rangers stay in SPL 2 Rangers to Third Division 3 Rangers to First Division 4 Rangers to SPL2 5 Rangers terminated or suspended

And you gave it a lot of thought. I can tell. A Kit-Kat and coffee break if ever I saw one.

**SO WHAT EXACTLY ARE WE BEING ASKED TO CONSIDER? **

Now we get to the meat and bones of it … No laughter in the back please ….

•Rangers in the IRN-BRU First Division this coming season

No such club. You are talking about a brand new team starting in the second tier. Why not say it?

•A one off fee to buy out the Rangers media value. (£1million) thus protecting the current contracts in place.

What the Hell does this even mean? Wait … surely … surely not … surely we are not suggesting that the SPL PAYS SOMEONE TO BROADCAST RANGERS GAMES? WTF? Are we to become the first football league in the world that actually PAYS for someone to show games? And of what? A team which ISN’T EVEN IN THE LEAGUE …. What a laughable suggestion.

IF WE AGREE THEN WE REQUIRE THE FOLLOWING

A mix up in the “narrative voice” this one, and another sign of a rush-job. When this entire proposal sounds like it comes from someone outwith the SFL, this is the first suggestion that it is, in fact, an SFL proposal … but doesn’t it jar you a wee bit reading that? That’s called “author intrusion.” It breaks the spell of “reality”. As if that was ever an issue here.

•Play-Offs immediately, based on our format

And a bizarre format it is too. How is three play-off places even going to work? This looks, and smells, like a deliberate attempt to make sure even a severely weakened Rangers can still get into the SPL again. There is no other reason for such a bizarre system.

•A new distribution model with the settlement agreement value protected and future proofed

Pure fluff, since we don’t know what exactly that settlement agreement value is, or what the new distribution model might be. This is an effort to bribe someone with the old “which hand do you want?” trick. From the Craig Whyte School of Business.

•An amalgamation of the SPL & SFL

If Neil Doncaster gets his jotter as a useless irrelevance, that will be a good start.

•A more balanced governance model (as circulated)

Haven’t seen it. Can’t comment. I suspect this is about voting shares and requirement.

WHICH WILL DELIVER BENEFITS TO THE SCOTTISH FOOTBALL LEAGUE

    Oh really? Like what?

•Immediate cash benefit for all 30 clubs!

Sheer nonsense. Whatever minor trickle down to the bottom tier there is will probably be offset by fans who vote never to attend another game again. Unlike at the top, where TV money and sponsorship are all that matters, the closer you are to the bottom, the more the clubs rely on boots on the ground, on money at the gate. Mess with that … you can close the doors.

•Gate receipt uplift in Division 1

And to Hell with Divisions 2 and 3. Very egalitarian and principled.

•Potential hospitality & advertising values increase

Aye, for clubs who get a NewCo visit. Which rules out every club in Division 2 and 3 again.

•Sponsors receive added value through additional exposure

See above. Great value for SFL 1 … if the gate receipts don’t collapse. But the rest?

•Scottish Government remain committed to our community strategy

A DANGEROUS DANGEROUS STATEMENT BECAUSE IT SUGGESTS THIS IS AT THREAT IF NEWCO ARE NOT IN THE FIRST DIVISION. THIS MATTER NEEDS URGENT CLARIFICATION BECAUSE THIS IS GOVERNMENT INTERFERENCE IN FOOTBALL TO A HITHERTO UNPRECEDENTED DEGREE.

•SFL has more influence at the top table

And if this proposal is accepted that is the LAST thing anyone with the best interests of Scottish sport will want, after they have shown themselves to be self interested to a fair-thee-well.

•Play-Offs restore the sporting meritocracy and deliver additional value

Don’t even DARE attempt to defend “sporting meritocracy” with this cabalist carve up which destroys the very notion of that forevermore.

    AND BENEFITS TO SCOTTISH FOOTBALL

These will doubtless be riveting ….

•A unified plan presented to the Scottish footballing public which offers real possibilities for the game

Arrant nonsense. It will destroy the game, by presenting the Scottish footballing public with two irrevocable and final proofs; 1 that their wishes will forever be ignored and 2 that it does not matter what Rangers/NewCo does or has done, in the past, the present or the future … some clubs are just too big to be treated like the rest. Scandalous.

•Keeps all 42 clubs together avoiding a divisive SPL2 split

Whoopee-do. An idea which will never see the light of day, being used to scare us.

•Deals with the need for sporting integrity with regard to Newco

A statement so profoundly and self-evidently false it literally staggers me.

•Delivers innovation in the form of a single league, Play-Offs and a pyramid plan

At an incalculable cost in terms of the integrity of the game.

•Delivers new value for the game

    Nonsense. Destroys the game.

•Potentially narrows the financial gap between Scottish Premier League & Scottish League

Guarantees that before long the SPL will be dominated, again, by two clubs and sets up the next big scandal or bail out. Lays the foundations for a future which will make the present day seem like a vision of Utopia.

•Shows leadership for the game in Scotland

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha. Oh man, you’re killing me ….

•Allows fans to engage in the bigger picture

You’re joking. Tell me you are joking.

    •A positive media outcome

That the writer EVEN CARES about this, or thinks we should, shows how far from sanity we have strayed here. A ludicrous statement to end a ludicrous document.
