Gang of 10 plan creates 41 winners and only one loser

983

Q. There will be 12 teams in the SPL next season.  How many do you think stand to gain from the redistribution of income proposed by the Gang of 10?

A. 11.

Q. There will be 30 teams in the SFL next season.  How many do you think stand to gain from the redistribution of income proposed by the Gang of 10?

A. 30.

Although TV and commercial money will be diluted, it is a sideshow compared to the real cash cow remaining in Scottish football, the gate money at Celtic Park.  The Gang of 10 refused to exclude this option from their proposed change in voting rights.

A 20% share of gate money doesn’t have sufficient support from SPL clubs, too many losers.  A 30% gate share only has one loser, everyone else wins, including the club who took 87 fans to a league game at Celtic Park last season.

This is nothing to do with Sevco, who are unlikely to pull a financially viable plan together (although the SPL and SFA are still trying).  You’re being asked to open your wallets and pay for the upkeep of 42 stadiums, squads, boards of directors and kit men.

This is not a viable plan.  It’s time for Scottish football to admit defeat.  Sport has been subverted for over a decade to the point there is nothing left.  We can keep Hampden and the national team going, but there is no viable league structure.  The sooner we accept this and move on the better.

I think there’s something a little too coincidental about some of the “The BBC/STV understands…” stories coming out today, just after the long list of players who are leaving becomes apparent, and the shambolic scenes at Ibrox last night when Rab C Nesbitt addressed the rent-a-mob to general hilarity.

All through the downfall of Rangers, expectations have been managed. From being told liquidation was unlikely, through HMRC being happy to accept a CVA, to the newco applying to join the SPL, and now we’re being told it’s all stitched up for them to get into Division 1.

The SFA/SPL/SFL can only do so much for Sevco. They can’t protect them from financial reality, which is that they are done for.

They’ve got just 12 players, they’ve got a civil war on their hands, and they’ve got just about every club and every fan in Scotland against them.

I’m not saying there’s no chance that there’s no plan to parachute Sevco into SFL1, but the whole thing to me smacks of the need to reassure 50-60,000 nut-cases that every little thing’s gonna be alright, just as they’ve been doing for them all along.

Either there is a massive stitch-up in the offing, OR the volatile, lunatic mainstream of the Hun support are being let down very, very gently.

Following the BBC report today in regards to plans for Rangers NewCo to enter Division One Chairman Stewart Milne stated:

“The statement that I issued on Monday was both clear and unambiguous and for the avoidance of any doubt I will restate it. Rangers NewCo should apply to the SFA for admission and apply direct to the SFL in the same way that any other new club would do. This is and remains our club’s absolute position.”

  6. Hi guys, 1st post, been lurking for about a month now, and am impressed by the quality of the mainly intelligent and perceptive comments and insights I’ve been reading.

I dont feel qualified enough to offer my opinions on our favouriue subject at the moment, but I am angered at the prospect of having to give up a proportion of our fan’s gate money to clubs whose travelling support barely number double figures.

Surely a fairer way would be take the average number of supporters who visit CP over, say, a 5 year period, and offer that club, that number of tickets to sell to their fans, and they keep the money raised. We would be making money home and away!

    Any flaws?

    I stand to be enlightened.

Well we did reach Seville 9 years ago.

If you think we’re hated in Scotland now, if Celtic played in England, we’d be hated by every club and supporter from every club in England & Wales. No longer would fans (including those from Ireland) have Celtic as their “2nd team”, Celtic would become just another rival team, except we’d no longer have a historic rival.

Our latent support would disappear in an instant.

It would be all bad and no good. We’d be hated in England for being nothing more than economic migrants looking for English silver and we’d be hated in Scotland for jumping ship just because Rangers were liquidated.

Just imagine the public disorder if every MSM outlet had run with “Rangers dead and gone,” on liquidation day.

I can only hope that my club are exploring every avenue to leave Scottish football to it ,if this gets passed .

I never wanted my club to move anywhere and still hold out hope that the fans can force the clubs to do the right thing (in spite of the charlatans running the game ) but I am afraid it is a lost cause .

After this debacle there isn’t really much point in continuing trying to play football in Scotland .

If uefa/fifa allow this corruption to happen then ,as some have said ,with us having a couple of real billionaires on board ,maybe it’s time Celtic took them to court for restriction of trade and start the revolution uefa/fifa have been dreading for many years .

The ‘STV UNDERSTANDS’ joke continues……..despite the fact the don’t even have a team

The Scottish Premier League have warned they will form a breakaway second tier if plans to put Rangers in the First Division are not approved by clubs.

STV understands a number of sides in the Scottish Football League have been told they face being cut adrift from the top tier if they do not agree to proposals for league reconstruction.

Plans emerged on Thursday which would see the merger of both the SPL and SFL, the introduction of play-offs and a change to financial distribution between clubs in the top two tiers.

Central to the suggestions is the SPL finding means to relegate Rangers from their league, meaning they would play First Division football next season as a new company.

If they do not gain the approval of clubs, it is understood the long-mooted SPL2 could be created, with SFL First Division sides invited to join.

    Rangers

Charles Green’s new company is attempting to have the SPL member share transferred from the old business. An 8-4 majority vote of the league’s 12 clubs is required and is due to be held on July 4.

However, seven top flight clubs have already said they will not give their approval, meaning Rangers’ share will be returned to the league.

The onus now falls on the 30 clubs of the SFL to agree to a new financial and sporting package, which would see Rangers play in the First Division in the 2012/13 season.

Plans include a £1m payment to the league for the SPL to broadcast matches involving the Ibrox club, as well as a redistribution of revenue to give more money to First Division clubs.

SPL sources also claim having Rangers in the second tier would add a combined £2m onto the gates of the other nine First Division clubs, a claim which has not been backed up with evidence.

A play-off would also be brought in between the top two leagues, with the side finishing 11th in the SPL taking on the sides placed second, third and fourth in the First Division.

Any Rangers newco would also be forced to accept any sporting sanctions relating to outstanding investigations into the oldco, as well as paying off all football debt.

SFL clubs will meet on Tuesday to discuss the plans, although a vote will not be taken at the meeting.

    SPL2

Should the SFL clubs reject the plans, the SPL will push ahead with plans to form a second tier which would include the newco Rangers.

First Division clubs would be invited to join the new division, reducing the numbers in the SFL and cutting off the promotion and relegation link between the two bodies.

one flaw in your argument. Football’s landscape has changed, and the Club could easily grow due to the improved income (vast) and exposure generated from playing in england. Clubs like chelsea, man utd, spurs, liverpool have grown their fanbase exponentially via the epl’s international exposure, and Celtic already have a lot of foreign supporters (Germans, Italians, Dutch etc) and this base would continue to grow if the Club played anywhere bigger than the SPL. So yes – we would lose the Liverpool-loving-paddies from places like Dublin (who never attend a game anyway) and the english folk who have us as a second team would possibly drop us. however, in Scotland and Northern ireland, our already-massive support would continue to grow, due to young kids opting for Celtic as a viable alternative to the likes of chelsea/man uts who they decide to follow now. (Kids aren’t interested in second-rate teams). And also… the international fanbase would continue to grow. if nonentities like everton are playing in lucrative tournaments in asia etc, imagind how biug a draw Celtic could become in the US markets, and also in europe etc – given that we are already fairly popular in both.

Most people down here have a broadly affectionate view of Scotland and many football supporters from the big cities have a preference for Celtic.

  28. First Division teams current position on proposals for Sevco5088fc to join Div1

COWDENBEATH: Chairman Donald Findlay said: “It is a big mistake. In a football sense, what are we doing?

“We’re creating two meaningless divisions – Rangers will win the First Division and Celtic the SPL.

“We will have two pointless leagues in terms of competition. What does that say about Scottish football? The money might be better for First Division clubs but it means there is no chance of promotion for any of the other teams.

“The clubs who are opposing Rangers going into the SPL are being narrow minded. The stance is payback for Rangers for the arrogance of their success of a number of years because there is always a lot of envy towards a team who continue to win.”

FALKIRK: A spokesman said: “We strongly believe the current turmoil should be a catalyst for change.

“Reconstruction, First Division play-offs, fairer distribution of wealth and the ending of undemocratic voting systems should be the minimum level of change.

“It would be totally unacceptable if a Rangers newco were admitted to the First Division on the current rules. Even a weakened Rangers newco would have resources that far outstripped other First Division clubs and this would pretty much guarantee them promotion.”

RAITH ROVERS: A statement read: “Whilst we retain an open mind on the subject of league reconstruction and will carefully consider any proposal put to us by the SFL, we shall certainly not cast our vote in favour of any integrated plan that in our view compromises sporting integrity by involving the admission of any newco directly into Division One.”

HAMILTON: Chairman Les Gray said: “Our view would normally be that Rangers should apply to the SFL and start in the Third Division. I expect someone to come to us in the next few days with details of reconstruction and monetary issues including the Sky deal but until then, we don’t have a viewpoint.”

DUNFERMLINE: The fans will decide the club’s position but chairman John Yorkston believes the Pars can replace Rangers in the SPL. A statement read: “It is difficult enough to implement a business plan with any degree of certainty, never mind any form of uncertainty. It is important that the club and its supporters stick together.”

PARTICK THISTLE: Chairman David Beattie said: “We will make no comment as we will be canvassing the opinion of our fans.”

MORTON: Chairman Douglas Rae said: “Under current SFL rules, any club making an application for membership should be admitted to the Third Division.

“I see no reason to make any exception to that at this time and would therefore vote accordingly.”

DUMBARTON: Chief executive Gilbert Lawrie, an SFA board member, said: “We will not comment until a decision has been made and we have something to comment on.”

LIVINGSTON: Ged Nixon, chief executive, said: “Nothing has been released as to what the proposals regarding Rangers may be so it would be inappropriate to comment.”

DUNDEE: Manager Barry Smith, said: “I don’t think there is sufficient information to comment.”
