Gilmour, black and white and blue all over

662

St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour, last week suggested the SPL’s 11-1 protected voting rule, which in the past enabled Celtic and Rangers to block changes against their interests, was a reason for him to oppose Scottish football’s league reorganisation plan.

Today, with Rangers consigned to history, Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell, proposed a change in voting rules, replacing the requirement to have an 11-1 majority with a 9-3 majority, which Aberdeen chairman, Stuart Milne, called a “major concession”.

This was not linked to the league reorganisation vote, but Stewart Gilmour voted against this change, despite using this voting rule as an excuse for his reluctance to allow reorganisation.  So we now know St Mirren’s objection is nothing to do with voting rules, the brought Aberdeen’s Milne to say on his way out of Hampden, “You need to ask what [St Mirren’s] agenda is”.

After the SFL’s chef exec, David Longmuir, came under pressure from First Division clubs for opposing reorganisation plans, Newco Rangers’ chief executive, Charles Green, was a guest of Gilmour’s at St Mirren’s recent game against Celtic.  Green has been a vocal opponent of the league reconstruction proposals and right on cue, Newco released a statement offering support to Gilmour and Ross County, the other objectors.

For those who like their irony straight from the mouths of the stupid, Newco even suggested St Mirren and Ross County “should not be singled out for criticism. They stood up for what they and their fans believe”.  Just like all those clubs who were criticised bitterly by Newco for voting as their fans wanted a year ago.

Milne added, “St Mirren FC have really got to pose themselves the question qhy are they prepared to put Scottish football in jeopardy for their own selfish interests, which they have been unable to do today.”

Some people have a belief that there will now be an invitation-only SPL II with Newco being invited.  I can tell you with absolute certainty this will not happen.  There will be no Newco in the second tier of Scottish football next season.

Instead what has happened is attitudes have hardened against such moves.  It would not be at all surprising if 10 SPL clubs declined tickets for their visits to St Mirren Park next season – the anger is that serious.  The status quo will be maintained, St Mirren have lost enormous goodwill above and below them, First Division clubs have failed to secure a significant boost in income and the SPL will get on with business.

All of which brings us back to Stuart Milne’s question, what is St Mirren’s real agenda?  I know fine well what it is, but they have not damaged Celtic, they have not assisted Newco in any way and the poor St Mirren fans will inherit the collateral damage.

A wee bit older than you and totally agree.

Wile E Walter at the weekend when asked how to sort out Scottish football said “more investment.”

The only way they know how to deal with problems is to throw money at it, even when there is no money to throw.

That would hardly be news to a long time lurker/supporter.

The post was calculated to provoke the response it did.

A spokesman for Rangers confirmed that there had been a transfer of assets between one newco and a second separate newco. He told STV: “For the avoidance of doubt, Sevco 5088 Limited bought the assets of the Rangers Football Club and then transferred them to Sevco Scotland Limited so that all the assets would be in the Scottish registered company that is Rangers FC.”

You don’t think Scottish football will suffer if they survive TT, when you’ve got the whole games bending over backwards to give them advantages they don’t deserve and the CEO trying to bend people up with bribes and intimidation??

  9. Asonofdan, gutted wasnae the word!! no quite as gutted as i was when i stood in the san siro when Kaka was allowed the freedom of milan (never understood why Lennon never took one for the team and blootered him)or being cheated fae that knob giggs down in Manchester no long after many hoops fans headed down to his testimonial!! But Aye good days/nights this year in Europe which has saved a pretty uneventful( on the park) bar the comeback v Aberdeen season league …… so far roll on sunday!!

  10. Well…..CQN told us yesterday well in advance of the msm’s ‘breaking news’ that the ridiculous convoluted reconstruction plans were a busted flush.

So, what was all the fuss about?

And do we need badly thought out change for change’s sake just to keep sevco, one more of life’s busted flushes, happy?

A fourth tier shabby excuse for a football club goosestepping around issuing communiqués like they mattered any more.

Let’s hope they trumpet some nonsense about forming a breakaway league of their own (never mind that uefa would never sanction it) and then they could garner loads more diddy wee trophies.

Hold on…..didn’t they try to float that one some time ago?

Still, desperate times and all that stuff.

They must be haemhorraging money. Won’t be long ’til Chuckles is on his knees to Wonga, because none of the high street banks are going to touch his toxic assets with their grubby paws.

And I still don’t understand this rush to reconstruction. It wasn’t even on the horizon until the exalted ones flushed themselves like the waste they are down the pan.

All of a sudden….reconstruction is the name of the game.

The whole thing smells as bad as the past their use by date berzz.

  11. El Maestro`s post might be very poorly thought out but I don`t believ for one second he is a Hun. For many, Celtic is much, much more than a Club. Many fans from Glasgow have had personal experience of the treatment doled out to non-Establishment folk. Celtic became the embodiment of our feelings against that treatment and those who want the Huns to disappear completely are of that mindset.

In other parts of the country, many Celtic supporters see Celtic in much the same way as the fans of Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, Hearts, Hibs etc see their team. I believe that many of those fans would agree with El Maestro.

For the sake of clarity, I would love the Huns to disappear completely but would dearly like a genuine,un-favoured, sporting rival.

I personally was not bothered one way or another about whether league reconstruction was going ahead or not, as long as there was/is no fast track back to the SPL for Sevco.

  19. Morning all

Got a biggish meeting with boss at 4 so a bit nervous but enough of my problems.

Been interesting reading the comments prompted by El Maestro’s debut post. I’ll assume he is a Tim because I do know plenty of folk who miss what were called Old Firm matches and many more who miss meaningful competition in the league.

I’ll concede right now that this has been a right curate’s egg of a season- some smashing games at home and abroad but also some real stinkers when our team has flopped abysmally. But never have I felt that one of our awful displays was going to harm our chances. The great thing about a season like last one was the realisation – three or weeks before Rangers’ implosion – that we were going to do it , even the terrible realisation when we drew with Hearts weeks before WGS’ last season ended that we were going to blow it is in someways preferable to the complete lack of suspense this season.

Whatever though I have no desire to see a return to what was there before. The current incarnation of Rangers seems even less pleasant than the original suffused as it is with not just the usual bigotry and bullying but a totally unjustified sense of victimhood.

The games themselves were seldom enjoyable – I never attended one in person between May 1999 and October 2010. I didn’t once wish I’d been there even when we beat them 6-2. They were nasty affairs that brought out the worst in people and I’m not blinkered enough to think it was all one way either. I dont want them back .

But I do want competition – and not because we have slipped to the level but because United, Hibs, Motherwell or whoever have improved. The baggage and attendant mayhem of The Rangers ( or whatever they are called) is not something I can live without.

    Sorry for rambling on

    ==============

Many Celtic fans feel the same as you.Define many? And a slight

I can’t be certain and can only assume the vast majority of Celtic fans would very happily place the padlock on the gates of Mordor themselves.

I struggle to understand how anyone can miss having to listen to the dead clubs supports sectarian bile. Now lest some have forgotten it wasn’t a small percentage of their support singing their supremacist songs of hatred it was the majority.

Scottish football will heal all the quicker without their fetid presence.

Remember when there was real completion in Scottish football and the great players it produced. When did that all change and what is the actual cause of the malaise Scottish football is currently in? Well we all know the answer to that don’t we.

Ahh! As I read through your post I remembered about the voting structure.

Still what PL was offering was a permanent* change to the voting and not a one off as it was presented.

    Many thanks for the clarification.

*As far as these things are ever permanent.

    El Maestro.

You do not sound like a Celtic supporter to me – or if you are you have failed to absorb the spirit and the principles of our great club. Perhaps you should read to-day’s club statement for a start. You seem to have sympathy for a club which has brought disgrace to Scottish football all over Britain and Europe. As a Celtic supporter of over 60 years, I want to see our club as far away from that other club as possible.

  25. OPPS should read Many Celtic fans feel the same as you.Define many? And you have slightly exagerated i think

I know plenty of huns who are convinced we miss them-I hardly know any TIMS who do,though.

And when I try to convince said huns that we don’t miss them, they turn it round by saying it’s because we don’t have anyone to stop us winning the league!

They are just not to be reasoned with,a mindset like theirs is immune to change.

  29. Morning fholks,

I mostly lurk these days but a post today has woken me from my slumber.

Thankfully for me a few posters have covered exactly my feelings on sevco/rfc and covered it in a far more eloquent way than I ever could.

    celtic_first craiginho kayal33 and snake….I agree 100%

In my opinion if you want to judge the true input rfc gave to Scottish football then its way back to the early 80’s you have to go. Were you will find they offered very little. Winning the odd League cup with crowds of on average 3000/4000.

    Unless they were playing Celtic.

The team that, in their eyes, represented everything they hated (still do )…..catholics.

Since those days what we unfortunately faced in our ‘ competitive ‘ rivals was false. Either through grossly overspending other people’s money or just outright cheating.

So for anyone who wants to peddle this ibrokes myth that Scottish football needs a strong sevco…..Im sorry but Im out!!

    headtheball….

I was watching an SPL game in the Ha’penny in Peurto del Carmen. When after the game I got chatting to an older fella next to me. During the conversation he said one of the most ridiculous things a fellow Tim has ever said.

Now its important to tell you this happened in 2010.

    His exact words were.

” I think david murray would have been a brilliant chairmen for Celtic”

I couldn’t believe that knowing what we all knew back in 2010 that any Celtic fan would come out with that statement.

I tried to educate him as to what had gone on and what was on the horizon for his favourite ever non Celtic chairman but to no avail.

I often wonder what his feelings on minty are these days….who knows maybe he thinks a strong sevco in the top league would cure all our ills!!

I never got the guys name but he did tell me he was from Blackpool.

Could anyone confirm if CQN’s resident Blackpool poster has a soft spot for minty…lol
