Gilmour, black and white and blue all over

662

St Mirren chairman, Stewart Gilmour, last week suggested the SPL’s 11-1 protected voting rule, which in the past enabled Celtic and Rangers to block changes against their interests, was a reason for him to oppose Scottish football’s league reorganisation plan.

Today, with Rangers consigned to history, Celtic chief executive, Peter Lawwell, proposed a change in voting rules, replacing the requirement to have an 11-1 majority with a 9-3 majority, which Aberdeen chairman, Stuart Milne, called a “major concession”.

This was not linked to the league reorganisation vote, but Stewart Gilmour voted against this change, despite using this voting rule as an excuse for his reluctance to allow reorganisation.  So we now know St Mirren’s objection is nothing to do with voting rules, the brought Aberdeen’s Milne to say on his way out of Hampden, “You need to ask what [St Mirren’s] agenda is”.

After the SFL’s chef exec, David Longmuir, came under pressure from First Division clubs for opposing reorganisation plans, Newco Rangers’ chief executive, Charles Green, was a guest of Gilmour’s at St Mirren’s recent game against Celtic.  Green has been a vocal opponent of the league reconstruction proposals and right on cue, Newco released a statement offering support to Gilmour and Ross County, the other objectors.

For those who like their irony straight from the mouths of the stupid, Newco even suggested St Mirren and Ross County “should not be singled out for criticism. They stood up for what they and their fans believe”.  Just like all those clubs who were criticised bitterly by Newco for voting as their fans wanted a year ago.

Milne added, “St Mirren FC have really got to pose themselves the question qhy are they prepared to put Scottish football in jeopardy for their own selfish interests, which they have been unable to do today.”

Some people have a belief that there will now be an invitation-only SPL II with Newco being invited.  I can tell you with absolute certainty this will not happen.  There will be no Newco in the second tier of Scottish football next season.

Instead what has happened is attitudes have hardened against such moves.  It would not be at all surprising if 10 SPL clubs declined tickets for their visits to St Mirren Park next season – the anger is that serious.  The status quo will be maintained, St Mirren have lost enormous goodwill above and below them, First Division clubs have failed to secure a significant boost in income and the SPL will get on with business.

All of which brings us back to Stuart Milne’s question, what is St Mirren’s real agenda?  I know fine well what it is, but they have not damaged Celtic, they have not assisted Newco in any way and the poor St Mirren fans will inherit the collateral damage.

I can’t argue with your direct experience but I have not met 1 Celtic supporter who wants to ever have to play them again. Every single one is delighted that we never have to face them again and at what has happened to them and is enjoying the ongoing shambles. My auld Dad, e.g. has said repeatedly that he never ever expected to see this day and that they deserve everything that has happened. He has no access to CQN, although I do regularly try and give him updates. He seldom went to games against them except a few when he wouldn’t let me go by myself, although he used to go to every other game home and away. By the bye, some of his best mates, including those who spoke for him to get work when he left school, were Rangers supporters.

Listening to Neil Doncaster last night he confirmed that the TV deal is in place for another 4 years and he was confident of having a new league sponsor in place for next season. However, he (the SPL) believed that the new league structure would allow them to get a better league sponsorship deal and negotiate a better TV deal. He obviously wouldn’t confirm anything but indicated that discussions had taken place and the feedback was positive. With no league construction its as you were for the SPL, i.e. clubs struggling financially, and Armageddon for some in the first division.

That’s what I understood him to be conveying, though could be wrong as that sevco trumpet McIntyre kept shouting over the top of him!!

    El Maestro,

In a straight league with straight officials and a straight media a straight Rangers without the bile would be most welcome.

The problem is too much water has now flowed under the bridge. For years we all had that nagging doubt that things might just be straight when we all knew things weren’t right. The last two years have now removed any slither of trying to convince ourselves that what we were watching was indeed a fair competition.

Until there is a mass clear out from top to bottom and our game is seen to be sparkling clean. Then how can it be possible to trust the SFA or a Rangers in the future?

The SFA needs cleaned up as does The Rangers boardroom (maybe an independent panel should be set up to monitor the day to day dealings of any future Rangers entity). As much as a Celtic/Rangers game gets the juices flowing, for the majority of fans any miniacule amount of trust they may have been holding on to has now been destroyed. I can understand why you miss the OF games but bringing them back now before the game is repaired is pointless and would just kill our game completely.

    Quite.

For a change I happened to watch the Aberdeen game a few weeks ago on internet live rather than wait until later on to see it on Celtic TV as I was heading out and knew I couldn’t prevent hearing the score.

I also followed it on twitter at the same time and the number of people complaining about Neil Lennon when we went 3-1 down was astonishing. There was palpable anger from some that we had managed to concede goals and were losing the game. Some of the same people were on later saying how wonderful we were after winning the game with a last minute goal and saying how great it was that there were good competitive games in the SPL.

I think there are a lot of Celtic supporters who want the league to be competitive but only if Celtic win all the time.

  7. Interesting concept Scottish Football needing a strong Rangers.

A notion that I can’t get my head around for any number of reasons

Firstly, like many have said today, Scottish Football’s last glory years were quarter of a century ago when, the top tier was competitive, several clubs comepeted at the highet level in Europe and the National side had a plethora of quality players and qalifies for major tournaments. Maybe not as good as but certainly competitive with their English nieghbours. Rangers were not a strong side.

Secondly during the following two decades with a Strong Rangers the competitiveness of the League declined, the quality of Scottish Footballers declined, the National Team declined and Scottish Football fell wwaaaayyy behind their auld enemy on every platform. Rangers spent more money than they brought into the game.

Thirdly and at the end of the day the ONLY thng that counts is that sport by it’s very definition is a persuit based on merit. No competitior in Sport should have ANY RIGHT to be in a position that cannot be obtained by honest endeavour.

At the end of the day if a club called Rangers can field a team playing by the Association Football, Corporate and Sporting rules and be competitive without fear or favour and add to the collective good of the game, sobeit.

Until then like every other Club they will have to prove their good governance and get there on sporting merit; Spartans get it, Celtic get it, Raith Rovers get it, why don’t they.

Going by what some are saying about our defence I think it was better ‘watching ‘ by text.

But no doubt this season has certainly proved the sevconians wrong regarding competition.

Anyone who was expecting hearts , motherwell, aberdeen or whoever to step up and take the league to the last game or two, it was never going to happen.

I expect a better challenge next year but again we will win the league with games to spare.

The damage thats been done to our game by rfc’s cheating was never going to be fixed in one season.

  17. Saturday and Sunday provided what I was hoping would be typical of his season: 4 teams trying to play football and entertain in order to win. Too many teams, like Aberdeen, came to Celtic Park intent only in not losing. There was no attempt to entertain. Given our situation, I think it is every team’s responsiblity to try and give those who pay to get in value for their money.

  18. Mort your earlier post is simply down to the lack of competion and the fact the players have struggled to raise their game!! Do you seriously think Celtic would have dropped some many points this season if the huns were in the league?? If the answer is No then we have to look at things closer mate!!

  19. KevJungle

If any Celtic fans only turn up to watch us play because of competition from Rangers, then we are better off without them.

The business strategy will adapt and we will have to ensure qualification to Champions League to ensure that money is there to pay for players who can be a success on the field. If the supporters don’t want to come, then they are not true supporters.

So should Elbows when he went over the ball and tried to put Kayal oot the game.

And yet….NFL came out the next day and told the lapdogs – “It was a 50-50 tackle, just two players going for the ball.” Aye sure Neil.

  22. KevJ, what we need to deal with is the fact that Sevco wont be back at the top level any time soon, Rangers never will, they are being liquidated. So what we need to do is even the playing field, financially. We need to deal with the league as it is, nor as it was. I think the firststeps were being taken yesterday, whatever the agenda was of the clubs who voted against it, it was misguided. Just an opinion.

  23. This is the first season-in all our lives-there has been no OF games. No matter where you lived in the world I’m sure you made an effort to watch these games, maybe at 6am even. These games have been part of the fabric of our lives, we loved winning them more than any other’domestic’game, I did. Losing was torture and hard to accept at times. El maestro has admitted missing the games this season, who can blame him he’s just being honest. Looking back this has been a great season, there have been incredible highs, an a couple of lows, but that’s fitba. The shenanigans continue down Govan way, they are still attempting to manipulate the game by slight of hand instead of honest endeavour. It is what they do.

We are moving on, Scottish football is moving on, slight setbacks, like St mirren an RC,will happen but they must not discourage us. I thought I’d miss the OF games this year, I have been pleasantly surprised. HH

  24. El Maestro,

I don’t think its as black and white as all that. There are many reasons why we have dropped points. The improvement of some of the other SPL teams could be a reason. Complacency among our players could be a reason. Focussing on Champions League games and adopting a slightly different approach to league games could be a reason. Injuries could also be a reason.

If there was a strong Rangers at our coattails this season, we may have had to prioritise league games rather than the Champions League so having no Rangers gave us a bit of breathing space in the league so that efforts could be placed into the Champions League.

If we continue to prosper in the Champions League because we can afford to drop some points in the league, then I’ll be happy.

    Mort

  26. I like many others on CQN who have been following Celtic since I was a wean, IMO seem to be the ones who want the zombies to perish and do not miss them one bit. The ones who were through the hard times and could see that the game was biased in the huns favour.

Howeva there was a big influx of fans when the new CP was getting built, fans who never went before, you know the ones, the ones who used to go to Cappielow and the likes, who never really had Celtic in their blood.

Most of these fans in my opinion are the ones falling away at the moment, the ones who probably will not admit it but do miss the hun games, miss the excitement etc And probably did not hurt as much when we lost to them.

I have noticed it on my bus this year and in my town in general, the ones who were all at Seville and the MON days, but now are drifting away.

Kev – A recession is a factual event, it cannot be IYO. Celtic have done well this season, however, those who want Rangers back are not supporting the same cause as most. That former team, stole millions from the public and private purse. Robbing small, local businesses, they deserve to be where they are. IF they come back fine we will smash them, I will however, never step foot in their home whether that be Glasgow, Paisley or Belfast

If you truly believe what you constantly say on here, then there is no need to continually refer to a “half empty” stadium at every Home game. I go to all the games and I am quite a good judge of crowd sizes. The vast majority of games have attracted over 40,000 and a few closer to 50,000. By all means complain that this is lower than “the good old days” but no need to pick the absolutely lowest gates simply to make your point.

I would also add that I am disppointed you would use a mainly anti-Celtic ” national press” to express your disapproval of our team.
