Glasgow arms race failure, thanking Sir David

1245

KR Reykjavík recorded a 0-2 win in the Icelandic Cup on Sunday and have one more league game, against bottom club Thor on Thursday, before facing Celtic on Champions League duty a week today.

Celtic have a game this evening against LSK Linz before facing a famous name from our past, Dukla Prague, on Friday.  While the world will be coming through a World Cup climb down Celtic will be facing a committed team in the mid-Atlantic.  There is no room for complacency.

Next week’s qualifier has all the potential to cause a fright.  Ronny Deila will by now know all about Gordon Strachan’s competitive start at Celtic, which cast a shadow he never completely shook off, so it is absolutely critical the manager gets us playing the way he wants us tonight.

Ross McCormack’s route from Murray Park reject at 19 eight years ago to a player Fulham have just bid £11m for is worthy of consideration.  It’s easy for us to point to how Rangers ruined young talented footballers but the stark truth is that for well over a decade Celtic had vastly better youth talent that Rangers but failed to graduate anything like as many as we should have.

McCormack had to go to Motherwell, a club well experienced at nurturing talent, to build his career, but he would have fared no better at Celtic.  Having no space for youth is one of the many unhealthy consequences of having two massive clubs engaged in a football arms race.  Our game was destined to destroy talent.

Fortunately, the man who loaned his name to Murray Park ensured that arms race would end in spectacular fashion, when he sold his club’s assets and liabilities to a liquidation specialist for £1.  In a perverse sort of way, Scottish football should thank him.

Thank you to everyone who supported CQN’s efforts for Glasgow the Caring City and The Cookie Jar Foundation, especially the reader who paid an incredible £530 for the signed European Cup canvas.  You are all a credit to our club.

Best wishes to Argentina tomorrow, I hope the overcome Netherlands for the memory of the first worldwide football hero they gave the game, Alfredo Di Stefano.

Mcgeouch could play in midfield, why is it in Scottish/British football that if your under 6 foot and have bags of skill you must be a winger,,,it’s time we evolved like the other European nations have, technical ability over height and strength!

  2. To me Griffiths scores most of his goals coming from the angle he usually goes for tha post, I didn’t see tonight’s goal, was it off the post?

IS Tony Watt going to be the next player that gets better every time he doesn’t play ? He’s had a couple of decent games and a right few stinkers, which is about par for a young player. We don’t get to see what the manager and staff see, I’d leave it up to them to judge him…

  4. Enjoyed the game.

Celts looked a lot fitter than their opponents especially after bi Hen was mysteriously sent for an early bath.

However, still not convnced by big Balde (despite his goal) – he has all the physical attributes but it just doesn’t work.

Red card was ridiculous, guy pulled back LG from breaking away, no yellow. Usually in friendlies the ref would say to the bench about subbing a guy who may be borderline,a 2nd yellow for moaning about a shy ? Geez peace.

  6. Have said all along that Henderson will be the “Real deal”..Dont blame the ref for the sending off though. The MIB will have a field day if he acts like that in the SPL.A good warning for him.

Still too much laborious build up followed by a hopeful punt to the opposition.Balde will never be a player for us.Sorry, for the boy and any who like him.Poor 1st touch, poor hold up play. Not what a target man needs.

Pukki,as I said, could lose a few Kilos.Griffiths sharper.Dylan,if he could play like this regularly, could make it.Still worried about our striker options.Broony news horrendous.

If it’s a tight game tonight, would you mind saying that Fred’s not on message with Scolari’s post-Neymar tactics, at some point?

    Sixtaeseven,

I liken him to a big lurcher pup, the bigger they are the longer it takes them to develop, you’d start to run a smaller dog at 12 to 18 months old, the bigger and ganglier they are the longer they take to fill out and control their legs, 24 to 30 months, I reckon big Amido will come good this season.

  9. things going well for Ronny and John in these games unfortunately the downside is the is the loss of Scott Brown for a long period.

  10. According to the most of latest interviews with the players the manger had a fairly lengthy one to one chat with every player, could it be that TW didn’t quite come across as Ronny would have liked? just speculating of course, but Tony hasn’t endeared himself to his last two managers, we shall no doubt find out soon enough, I personally hope he can be a success under this management team as I firmly believe the bhoy has a lot to offer.

    Very good that.

More likely to say Mueller needs to step it up a bit or he’s off…

    Mueller scores…

    BTW Fred and Hulk??

What happened to those exotic names like Didi, Vava, Garrincha, Rivelino?

    I blame Sesame Street.

Tony Watt apparently picked up a slight hamstring “knock” in training.

Nothing more sinister than that I’m afraid.

  14. Good evening friends.

9 different bets placed for the 2 world cup semis but basically if Germany and Argentina both win 2-1 in 90 minutes with Muller getting the first goal tonight then they’re all up ;-)

    I agree.

    I hear there’s a TJ Hooker plays for Botafogo………….

I just hope Tony Watt doesn’t turn into one of those “I could have been a player” old guys. The bhoy has got talent but needs to sort his head out it appears. TB would have worked wonders with him.

  17. Ray Winstone’s Big Disembodied Heid.

Many thanks for clearing that up, and thanks to all for the game updates.

    HH, always in Celtic.

Now being described as a groin “knock”, whatever that is.

Let’s not get too carried away,we were playing the equivalent of Albion Rovers.I think there are very few young players capable of playing a major part in the first team this season,in fact,Denny Johnstone who is not with the squad is IMO the brightest prospect.

I think we will go with basically the same squad as last season, with a couple of new signings.
