There are a few takeaways from Saturday’s straightforward win over Airdrie in the Scottish Cup. We are still missing penalty kicks. Those of us who were around last time we met Valencia in 2001 have a nervous reaction at the thought of facing the same side later this month, where the outcome could again be determined from 12 yards.
It is a while since we last failed to win a domestic trophy, but on that occasion we exited the Scottish Cup on a penalty kick competition. This remains the most likely chance anyone has of denying Celtic a trophy and should be regarded as a priority at training. We have a month before the second leg against Valencia, let’s be prepared.
Scott Sinclair should have had a hat-trick. His penalty miss was followed by a chance from inside the six yard box before an open goal. This was an identikit of the chance Kris Ajer missed late in the game against Salzburg – a knee-high cross is met but the player cannot keep the ball down. Poor technique, but this outcome is common, so it is not as bad a miss as it looks.
With the outcome settled, the North Stand assistant referee raised his flag to deny Scott, despite two Airdrie defenders playing him onsite. There was nothing malicious in this, it was just rank bad officiating and a timely reminder that our game is not run in a sufficiently competent manner.
It feels churlish to complain after winning 3-0 but you know a similar decision is likely to cost us next time.
Oliver Burke didn’t look like a centre forward (which he is not). Timothy Weah did. His movement marked him out even before his cool finish. He will do well in Glasgow.
Glasgow City Council are trying to make it very difficult for most of us to get to Celtic Park in future. They have proposed a 1 mile parking exclusion zone around the stadium. This means the nearest you will be able to park is 1 mile away, the majority of us will have significantly farther to walk to and from the game. If you approach the stadium from the east along London Road, this means the nearest car will be able to park at the entrance to St Peter’s Cemetery.
A few points on this:
Celtic Park is not catered for by public transport on match days in anything like the volumes required to remove thousands of people from the area.
Despite this, Glasgow City Council insist that fans must use public transport to attend Celtic Park after they remove parking facilities.
They have refused to offer any explanation as to how this could be achieved, or to facilitate additional public transport.
Forcing people to walk many miles to and from Celtic Park will only displace parking problems to a different area of the city.
It will mean people have to arrive at their parking spot up to an hour earlier and will reach their cars after the game an hour later than is currently the case – increasing the on-street parking burden for a new set of residents.

Other stadiums in the city are served by public transport, including underground stations. This is a predatory attack on people attending Celtic Park, please consider objecting before it is too late.

We need to replace the quality lost in the summer: Dembele, Roberts and Armstrong and to address weaknesses that have been known for a while and are now being exploited.
I think that between Bayo, Weah and Burke, we have strengthened our attack, although there are still rumors of a further attacker coming in.
However, we desperately need a first choice RB. Given that KT could be out for another month, we are going to be playing Ralston and Izzy at full back against Valencia.

Agree absolutely. The league is ours to lose , not for Sevco , kilmarnock or anyone else to win , provided we do our job.
On 29th , Sevco beat a Celtic team weakened by sickness and injury . However, their whole vile organisation pulled out every stop they could to get that win . Gerrard had his players fired up to win every physical battle knowing that the referee/fan in charge would let his team exceed what was legal. Their board tried to give them an edge by excluding all but a token amount of Celtic supporters. A concerted effort by them to do what they felt , had to be done.
We have the rest of the season to make sure we do what has to be done.

I think Valencia tie is no more than a money spinning venture.
We are not good enough as a team at this level so having an inexperienced right back won’t make much difference to our struggles against higher level teams
Dembele had not played much in his last six months so that area was a concern but hopeful Weah,Bayo and Burke will improve us in forward area.
Ww have a plethora of midfielders and i think the problem is not the players but the coaches seem unsure of how to use them.
To many times this season our midfielders seem to lack clarity in their role.
Ryan Christies headless chicken routine on Saturday being a prime example.
There needs to be a better focus on our systems /formations and individuals roles within them.
Of course signing better quality players would help but the coaches need to improve on their first half of the season’s performance.

Re Saturdays incident. Airdres right wing hooligan mob made no secret that they were coming for a battle and that they were bringing SDL and EDL mates with them. They did that, rampaging through the Barras. News of this spread to Tims at the ground and I guess some responded to the Fenian b taunts coming from young and old in the wider Airdrie support. We also have supporters who relish a rumble and they seem to have joined in, and as expected most of those arrested are likely to have been ours. The Airdrie and English hooligans are as teflon coated as a blue nose lavvy wrecker.

Good morning from a frigid but sunny southern Ontario, since I widnae even send a hun out in this weather I’m going tae comment on a couple of items that arose over the weekend.
I wrote with fervency of how VAR works over here in the NFL, however honest mistakes do happen and this weekend in both playoff games was laden with them and none more so than in the Saints/Rams game.
Saints Tommy Lee Lewis was victim of a helmet-to-helmet hit from Rams Nickell Robey-Coleman well before Drew Brees’ third-and-10 pass could even get to him.
Now a catch may not have ensured the new set of downs that would have allowed New Orleans to salt the clock away and kick a game-winning field goal as time round down, the pass interference call Robey-Coleman’s hit clearly constituted certainly would have.
Instead, no flag, 4th down, Lewis was shocked; Head coach Sean Payton was shocked, Robey-Coleman, even, was shocked.
Instead, the Saints kicked their field goal and gave the ball back to the Rams, who kicked an equalizer of their own, sent the game into overtime, and drilled a 57-yard kick to advance to Super Bowl 53, thanks, in no small part, to a completely botched no-call on clear pass interference.
Now this is huge, it was aired on the political networks right after the game where the former mayor of New Orleans stated they were robbed, still doing the rounds this morning, there was even VMS signs on the city’s highways highlighting it.
Next up is Huddersfield/Man City, the latters 2nd goal 2 players, Sane who crossed the ball and Sterling who scored were both offside as the initial ball was played.
It didn’t make any difference to the final score but the commentary team called it border line, horse manure well offside the pair of them. Honest mistake or just incompetence?
Oh and while I’m here the day before in the early game the Portuguese Stephen Flecher was sent tae the stands for celebrating his side’s 93rd minute winner, and has now been charged with misconduct which he rightly accepts. For those that are excitedly looking forward to VAR, would that have stopped the hostile Bankie goalie fae physically and verbally abusing our players, would it have prevented the useless linesman fae only puting his flag up after the ball was in the net and when the same goalie and his mates raised their hands in what might have been the distress signal. Would it have prevented the bbd (bigot bus driver) fae calling in an amateur mitb and requesting their game be postponed while the team were still in embra. Latest squirrels are they had a bug and he only had one kit with him.
