Glib, shameless, fit and proper

1532

Before digesting news reports that Dave King is set to return to Scottish football as a director of Newco Rangers, it’s probably worth a caveat.  Today’s ‘news’ has the same heritage as pretty much every false steer emanating from Ibrox over the past decade.  Honest Dave King may well hope to take over at Ibrox but I could just as easily believe he has no intentions of getting involved.

Two months ago King accepted liability for 41 counts of contravening the South African Income Tax Act, while agreeing to pay the resultant bill, the equivalent of £46m.  By act of sheer comic genius he is being heralded as the most appropriate person to take control of Newco Rangers, the club brought about by the disastrous income tax affairs of Oldco Rangers, while King was on the board.

Lord Nimmo Smith prevaricated on some issues in his report into Oldco but he was unequivocal in his condemnation of the directors, including King. South African judge, Brian Southwood, described King as a “glib and shameless liar” in 2011.

In every practical sense this man is a perfect fit for the Rangers group of clubs.  Every scrap of information available on how he conducts his affairs screams ‘Rangers tradition’.

As for Fit and Proper?  Don’t make me quote a second judge!

In the event the SFA have to make a Fit and Proper decision on King they will have to consider Nimmo Smith’s view.  It is not even remotely credible that the SFA are competent to rule on King while their president was subject to the same criticism from Nimmo Smith (although Judge Southwood provides a convenient out).

The narrative being peddled today is a final throw of the dice by some, nothing more.  ‘A guy will hunn’ers of millions is coming in to make everything OK’.  Aye, sure thing.

    The fight goes on!

Thursday 10th October 2013 saw the voters of Glasgow Ward 5 – Govan take to the polls to cast their vote in the local by-election. It also marked the end of weeks of campaigning by Thomas Rannachan supported by Fans Against Criminalisation all under the banner of Axe the Act, in reference to the Offensive Behaviour at Football and Threatening Communications Act.

Firstly, we wish to thank all of our supporters for all the time, effort and hard work they put into the campaign. The backing we had was indicative of how many football fans and more, feel against this illiberal law and attack on our civil liberties. We have given a good account of ourselves and proven to the Scottish Government that we will not sit idly by and tolerate this criminalisation of football fans.

Labour won the vacant seat which now leaves Nicola Sturgeon without any councillors in her own ward. We have shown that we can and will take support away from her party until such times as theytake positive action over the Act. It has been a learning curve for us along the way and we can be proud of what we achieved. During campaigning and on polling day, many of us successfully persuaded voters to cast a preference for Axe the Act, showing that our reasoned arguments make sense.

We acknowledge and appreciate that many voters, whilst supportive felt they still had to cast a vote for a main party, given that we are a single issue and they had other concerns which they feel need addressing. We take encouragement from this, that voters across the spectrum are aware of and feel strongly against the Act. It shows, as we have always said, that this issue affects people from all over and not just football fans and it is great they share our concerns. This is something we can definitely work with going forward.

Today is a very important day, perhaps the most important to date, as we move on and continue to fight against the Act. It doesn’t end now that the election is over with and decided. It is just the beginning…

Police officers who are Freemasons have been banned from working on the criminal investigation into the Hillsborough cover-up.

The revelation adds weight to the theory that members of the secretive organisation suppressed the truth after 96 Liverpool fans died in 1989.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission took the unusual move after families of the football fans who died in the disaster demanded that no members of a lodge be involved.

All of the employees in the IPCC investigation have also been told they cannot be from South Yorkshire or Merseyside, where the tragedy occurred.

Former West Midlands Police officers have also been banned after their force carried out a review that led to the flawed inquest verdicts being quashed last year.

Officers from the force have also been accused of changing witness statements.

The probe into the police’s role on the day of the disaster – codenamed Operation Resolve – employs 170 people, including 70 officers. The latest review, led by former Durham chief constable Jon Stoddart, was expected to report soon but the team has been swamped with evidence and has to interview 237 officers who were on duty at the match.

A source close to the probe said: “We have been told that no Freemasons are allowed on the investigation.

“One theory at the time was that the whole conspiracy was covered up by the group’s members as there are so many Masons in the police.

“The families have raised concerns… so we have prohibited them from being part of the investigation team. The deadline that officers were working towards is impossible and the review’s findings will be delayed.”

An IPCC source confirmed that Freemasons and former officers from the three forces had been banned from the probe.

The investigation team, while independent from the fresh inquests into the deaths, is helping coroner Lord Justice Goldring to prepare for and carry out the inquests, set to start by March 3, 2014.

Hillsborough was Britain’s worst-ever sporting disaster. Thousands of fans were crushed on the Sheffield Wednesday ground’s Leppings Lane terrace during Liverpool’s 1989 FA Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest.

Last December verdicts of accidental death from the original Hillsborough inquest in March 1991 were quashed.

The action was taken after the Hillsborough Independent Panel reported that there had been a huge cover-up.

The IPCC has previously revealed that statements given by witnesses could have been changed by police.

    Secret society pervades the establishment

The Freemasons is a “fraternal brotherhood” dating back to the 14th century. It started as an organisation to monitor the qualifications of stonemasons.

But in modern times the organisation is seen as an elitist group that has been dogged by allegations of corruption.

The all-male group, governed by the United Grand Lodge of England, has 250,000 members. Many figures in authority are Freemasons. The first US president, George Washington, and another leading American revolutionary, Benjamin Franklin, were Masons. Today a significant proportion of the Royal household are members, and the Duke of Kent is grand master of the UGLE.

Despite royal patronage, and their presence in the judiciary and the higher reaches of the City, the Masons deny being an underground arm of the Establishment.

  16. Police Scotland…

A COP is still walking a huge Weimaraner near the spot where another one of his dogs bit a six-year-old girl.

William McMurray, 53, had one of his pets seized after Olivia McAlonan had her arm bitten as she walked with her mum two months ago.

But it has since been returned while McMurray’s Police Scotland colleagues investigate the attack.

Olivia’s mum Alison says her little girl is terrified when she sees the dogs on their regular walks close to her home in Larkhall, Lanarkshire.

She fears one of the powerful hunting dogs could attack again and has questioned why they have not been muzzled or even destroyed.

She said: “My daughter was set upon by these dogs in the street. It was absolutely terrifying.

“She was left with blood pouring from her arm and required an overnight stay in hospital. We are horrified these dogs are still being walked on the streets.

“Our fear is they will attack again. I feel I have to make a point here – will it take another child to be injured, or worse, for action to be taken?

“Olivia remains terrified. She was a huge dog lover but is very scared now.

“We are also unhappy about the information we have received regarding whether or not there is likely to be a prosecution over the matter.”

The law requires that dogs are kept from being “dangerously out of control in a public place”.

A court can order animals to be destroyed if an offence is deemed to have taken place.

Alison said the dogs, which were on the leash, “viciously snarled and barked” at her daughter before one sank its teeth into her right arm.

The incident happened on August 12 in Larkhall as Olivia, who has autism, and her five-year-old brother walked with their mum.

Alison said: “There was blood all over the street –people were horrified.

“I was helped by passers-by. Olivia’s arm had a huge gaping wound which I had to hold together.

“We rushed her to the local surgery where they dialled 999. We were then taken by ambulance to Wishaw General hospital.

“Olivia’s wound was horrific. She had to endure two hours of surgery while the huge gap in her arm was treated and she had to spend the night in hospital.

“I reported this to police and they came the next day to take a statement. But two months has passed and nothing seems to have been done.

“Olivia is having nightmares over what happened. The owner is still walking the dogs, which have not even been muzzled.

“I called the police, who said all relevant information had been passed on to the procurator fiscal. But when I called the fiscal, they said they had no record of the case.”

McMurray now walks his dogs with a head collar – but it does not restrict their mouth. He said: “It’s up to the fiscal to decide what will happen so I would not wish to comment.”

A police spokeswoman said: “Police were informed on August 12 of a six-year-old girl bitten by a dog in Union Street, Larkhall.

“The owner was traced and a report has been sent to the procurator fiscal.

“The dog was seized by police but was later returned to its owner.”

A Crown Office spokesman said they had not received any report matching the details of the incident.

Sun on Sunday and Sunday Mirror sales fall after cover price rises

Red-tops’ revamps and ad pushes fail to deliver circulation gains, as the Observer is the biggest month-on-month riser

Sun on Sunday: sales fell 2.09% month on month to 1,876,476 in September

The Sun on Sunday and Sunday Mirror reported month-on-month sales declines in September, following cover price rises, editorial revamps and big-budget marketing campaigns.

The best-performing Sunday title in September was the Observer, up 3.28% month on month to 223,948, a 6.02% year-on-year fall.

The Sun on Sunday reported a 2.09% month-on-month fall in circulation to 1,876,476, a 9.9% year-on-year fall, according to the latest Audit Bureau of Circulations figures for September published on Friday.

This fall came in a month when the News UK title launched multimillion-pound editorial overhaul and major ad campaign, as well as introducing a 10p price rise to 70p.

Rival the Sunday Mirror, which also unveiled a “design refresh”, the biggest campaign in a decade and a 10p rise to £1.10p, reported a 2.38% month-on-month fall to 1,037,945. The year-on-year circulation fall was 4.60%.

Trinity Mirror stablemate the Sunday People, which also increased its cover price by 10p to £1.10p last month, fell by 2.43% month on month to 414,969, an 8.99% drop compared with September last year.

The only riser among the Sunday red-tops was Richard Desmond’s Daily Star Sunday, which grew 1.22% to 350,431. Year on year, the title was down 13.95%.

In September the Observer was helped by a renewed burst of the “Own the Weekend” marketing campaign, and the launch of new supplement Observer Tech Monthly. The Observer, published like MediaGuardian by Guardian News & Media, raised its price by 20p to £2.70p during the month.

The Sunday Telegraph was the only other quality Sunday to show a month-on-month improvement, up 1.16% to 440,388, with year-on-year sales down by 1.37%.

The Sunday Times was down just 0.33% month on month, to 823,696. This was an 8.94% year-on-year fall.

The Independent on Sunday also fell, down 0.23% to 109,901. Year on year, circulation was down 8.67%.

In the mid market, the Sunday Express fell 1.89% in September to 464,358, a 5.92% year-on-year fall.

    The Mail on Sunday dropped 1.83% to 1,644,864, a 6.47% year-on-year fall.
