Glib, shameless, fit and proper

1532

Before digesting news reports that Dave King is set to return to Scottish football as a director of Newco Rangers, it’s probably worth a caveat.  Today’s ‘news’ has the same heritage as pretty much every false steer emanating from Ibrox over the past decade.  Honest Dave King may well hope to take over at Ibrox but I could just as easily believe he has no intentions of getting involved.

Two months ago King accepted liability for 41 counts of contravening the South African Income Tax Act, while agreeing to pay the resultant bill, the equivalent of £46m.  By act of sheer comic genius he is being heralded as the most appropriate person to take control of Newco Rangers, the club brought about by the disastrous income tax affairs of Oldco Rangers, while King was on the board.

Lord Nimmo Smith prevaricated on some issues in his report into Oldco but he was unequivocal in his condemnation of the directors, including King. South African judge, Brian Southwood, described King as a “glib and shameless liar” in 2011.

In every practical sense this man is a perfect fit for the Rangers group of clubs.  Every scrap of information available on how he conducts his affairs screams ‘Rangers tradition’.

As for Fit and Proper?  Don’t make me quote a second judge!

In the event the SFA have to make a Fit and Proper decision on King they will have to consider Nimmo Smith’s view.  It is not even remotely credible that the SFA are competent to rule on King while their president was subject to the same criticism from Nimmo Smith (although Judge Southwood provides a convenient out).

The narrative being peddled today is a final throw of the dice by some, nothing more.  ‘A guy will hunn’ers of millions is coming in to make everything OK’.  Aye, sure thing.

  1. Big Nan,

Petition signed a number of weeks ago, however in addition to Thindimebhoy’s good suggestion have you considered posting your appeal on ‘Change.Org’? Both suggestions could get a significant increase in signatures.

  2. It’s very obvious the SFA have done a deal with Sevco to let King waltz back into Ibrox , a shocking decision to say the least and only shows up the SFA for what they are, as far as I am concerned it bothers me, BUT! It doesent surprise me, it’s just another knight moving in to clean up from the most stupidest people on this planet, the spivs have it all locked up, if King gets in and wants Murry by his side on the board then someone is going to have to pay the piper and it won’t be Murry or McColl, it will be the Sevco Fans who will pay the said piper, and as we have seen before while the begging bowl is out every body at Ibrox and on the board will be the best of pals, but when all the money comes in, then it’s back to square one, the spivs will want there divvy, there are lots of hidden investors here who are in for a quick buck and don’t want to be hanging around when the sheet hits the fan, and that will happen when someone finally stands up and shows who really holds the deeds to this pantomime.

The good thing for me is that he’ll be seen as a saviour riding in on his white charger, you’ve got to laugh. He even wants Paul Murray with him.

    You’d think they’d learn…

  4. So the men who took their club to the brink, ran away as wee Craigy pushed it over, are being heralded back as saviours of the new club?

Not been following the spiv saga and don’t read the rags

has this King merchant passed the fit and proper test?

    is it finalised?

  7. Good to see that in England they are prepared to ban Freemasons from the Hillsborough cover-up investigation. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could do the same in Scotland with an investigation into the Dunblane cover-up?

I won’t be holding my breath.

Don’t any of you hold yours.

Wanted to tell you that your friends from Lampedusa are true heroes of these times. Taking into account this awful Lecce Bossi-Fini they are best people on the earth.

How somebody who is paid for his job get Noble Prize, not Lampedusa people is beyond reasonable thinking. What you would expect from the lefties if they give it to Obama after couple of months after election? Political stuff , nothing to do with Samaritanians or Chistianity.

  11. From Tom English in the Scotsman Sunday 13th October 2013

This is where the analysis of King becomes mind-bending. A year earlier, the man who wanted Rangers to express regret for the things they had done wrong was denounced as a “glib and shameless” liar by a judge in a South African tax court.

In his epic battle with the authorities, King was described, by Justice Southwood, as a “mendacious witness” who had “no respect for the truth” and who “does not hesitate to lie.” King versus SARS lasted 14 years and it was the biggest tax case in the history of the country.

In the beginning the revenue service were chasing him for 2.7bn rand (about £230m) but recently the entire affair, including the 322 criminal charges, were settled for around £44m

From Richard Wilson in the Herald SUNDAY 13 OCTOBER 2013

Having settled his tax dispute with the South African Revenue Service, King would not face any difficulties over the SFA’s fit and proper person criteria.

    ——

Wilsons puff piece about David King sets the tone for the majority of the MSM in reference to King. Unlike English, Wilson prefers to omit the detail of Kings “settlement”.

It seems the details of Kings battle with SARS and subsequent plea deal which cost him 44 mil is hardly relevant a mere footnote while they paint King as the new saviour of Sevco.

There is no doubt the MSN want King onboard anybody with money no matter how tarnished will do. Like the Sevco fans the MSN also need stability at the newco so they to can get back to business as usual.

From Wealth of the Radar to Rand of the Radar mentioned by Tom English the MSM crave another rich owner and somewhere they can dine out on succulent lamb.

  12. Now that Simba has steakbakes backing that immediately confirms him as a fit and proper person to take them down the road further to perdition !! Has Hector woken up yet from his last shafting or is he another member of the Mau Mau grip mob !

Rotten to the core the lot of them !!!

  13. sean thornton –

The SFA cannot say a word about Dave King until such time as he is appointed to the board of directors at Sevco, or Sevco ask if they have any problem with such an appointment.

That’s not to say they will say or do anything, but asking the SFA to say or do something now just does not make sense.

  14. ‘The Board must be satisfied that any such person is fit and proper to hold such position within Association football.’

That’s the Board of the SFA.

Peter Lawwell sits on the Board of the SFA.

    I don’t suppose we’ll ever know.

  15. Drambowie Celt

It’s not public that he has been passed as fit and proper, but you can take it from me he has been, when the SMSM. Are acting the way they are now! You can put the pot on, the masons have had a meeting, and prob. One that can only go as high as you can in this country, to pass him.

I will approach Change.Org Boscobhoy and Thindimebhoy’s suggestion had already been acted on and I have had positive feedback from Liverpool.

Tom McLaughlin is right that we shouldn’t hold our breath and wait for change in Scotland which has the highest per capita membership of Freemasons in the World!

The Masons in Scotland are also unique in that many lodges have an orange flavour, but that is no reason why we should do nothing.

If we don’t complain they might think that we are happy with things the way they are!

  17. I’m sure the new SFA will forensically examine the background of Dave King and his little problem in South Africa. After hearing evidence from investigators, accountants, lawyers and other professional types they’ll conclude-in the ole Mt Florida way-he is one of the good guys.

The above will take all of five minutes…I’m being generous there!

Cue the double page spreads as the usual fans in the media herald him and ignore the fraud conviction and his previous failed directorship. Imagine he was a Celtic fan…

  18. ernie lynch

‘That’s the Board of the SFA.

Peter Lawwell sits on the Board of the SFA’

Correct. So does Rod Petrie. That should be 2 guaranteed ‘Nos’ to King becoming Chairman.

I won’t hold my breath though. I can hear the ‘that doesn’t fall under PL, Petrie’s remit’ already.

    Whitewash.

  19. The SFA, SPFL, Peter Lawwell, Superman, Batman, Spiderman and Jesus Christ Almighty cannot stop Dave King investing in Sevco if that is what he wants to do – without actually taking a seat on the board.

A lot of people on here spitting the dummy and keeking their nappies at the very thought of him throwing money at the goons.

Just what are you all scared of?

  20. Peter Lawwell again being slaughtered for doing something he hasn’t done yet about a response that hasn’t been made yet to a question that hasn’t been asked yet about a situation that hasn’t arisen yet.

    Welcome to CQN 2013.

  21. Tom McLaughlin 10:47:

I am not scared mate of King brings to the Table, bring it on I say. However, he should never be allowed to be recognised publicly as an office bearer of Newco.

The above said, whilst our hero is in exile so to speak, do not bet against him pulling the strings, he still has a big say in where Newco will end up, which in my opinion will Administration.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

  22. @Tony ok mate cheers. Was a genuine question btw, as I was led to believe

he fails on two counts under SFA rules.

@Norman don’t know about smoking the rug might be wearin wan on ma heid soon.

    off oot.

  23. Tom McLaughlin

You are quite correct that nobody can stop King investing in SevCo. But that is not the crux of the issue.

Under the Fit + Proper person criteria he should not be allowed to become Chairman.

Rules are there for a reason. If they are continually broken, what is the point of Scottish football as a whole?

  24. Tom McLaughlin

    10:47 on 13 October, 2013

Not quite sure how he’s going to throw money at them.

It’s fairly clear that he’s going to be a director.

There’s supposed to be rules in place about who can become a director.

If a mendacious, glib and shameless liar passes that test then it shows that Scottish football hasn’t changed one little bit.

It would also suggest that the Celtic board are complicit.

  25. Tom

I for one am not ‘slaughtering’ Peter Lawwell, it’s the shambles of the fit and proper test I find ridiculous, however I will be amazed if King is not allowed to join the sevco board.

I think your missing the point here, to be honest I don’t think anyone here gives a funkies muck, the point is the rule changing, it is slaughtering our game and ripping the piss out of us that’s what my concerns is.

  28. ernie lynch –

“I would also suggest that the Celtic board are complicit.”

The Celtic board are complicit in what? When was Dave King appointed to the board of Sevco?

  29. Tom

    ‘stench of fear’

I tell you what mate you know what buttons to press. By questioning the shambles that is our governing body we are supposedly running scared. Words are cheap and I don’t think there are many cowards amongst the Cqn’ers I’ve met. Many have fought the corruption and bigotry in this country head on for years.

    ####

I don’t detect any suggestion of fear. The only people who should be afraid of the return of the Lying King are the huns who are about to be shafted again.

What I do detect is anger and disappointment that nothing has changed in the way football is governed in this country (and the media are the same old same old).

Other than PL being on the Board of the SFA.

Anyhow, look after yourself until your return.
