Good Friday is just another Friday for you

1828

Sometimes it seems there is a constant struggle underway for the heart and soul of Celtic.  It is incredible that for 125 years a community has managed to retain the conviction to help the less fortunate which drove forward those who formed the club.

Scarcely a day goes by without me receiving a message from someone offering to help those in need.  This week it was tables for the Wayside Club Gala Dinner (Saturday 27 April, check it out here), someone send in a box set of the Byrds, to raise money ‘for the homeless’, and a reader parted with a precious top signed by the Seville team, which I’ve to collect in Glasgow.

Much of this goes on below radar but when a call to arms is needed it goes out in impressive clarity; the Wee Oscar campaign slipped into an infrastructure established when Kano took ill a few years back (hope you are doing well, Kano and we hear from you soon).  Believe me, some of the work, and many of the discrete donations, would blow you away.

None of this is random.  At some point each and every person who has stepped forward did so, knowingly or not, because of the way the Celtic Movement infected them.

A number of Celtic fans, and one former treble winning captain, are helping the Celtic Charity this year with the objective of encouraging each Celtic fan to raise £125.  It feels like the right thing to do and if you’ve not brought yourself up to speed with the project yet, do it this weekend (more information here).

There will be formal events throughout the year but if you want to do a sponsored run/walk/cycle/jig, this is your invitation.  You are reading this stuff because of your link all the way back to that hall in the Calton; get involved and earn your place in that 125-year-old story.

The next major event is a mass huddle at the top of Ben Nevis, check it out here.

Enjoy your Easter holiday – but not before you get involved………

I asked this morning if anyone knew when the SPL board meet to discuss WNS’S commissions findings, the reason I ask this is the official Celticplc line is its now a SPL board matter but Celtic will always put their clubs point forward and act in the best interests of the club and its support. These findings and the damage it done to Celtic despite the opinion of WNS cannot be allowed to be the end of matters.

    _______________________________

I think Celtic’s reaction to LNS was summed up by Neil Lennon. I understand Celtic as a club from top to bottom were bemused by it.

However it was not Celtic who commisioned LNS it was the SPL with the SFA taking a back seat (HAH) as a potential court of appeal. The SFA could have been viewed as culpable for allowing the use of ebts to have gone for so long with no questionning or getting clarification much earlier, so their star witness (Bryson) was not going to give evidence that put him or his employer in jeopardy.

The SFA then give key testimony that they could have made public at any time before the proceedings but only thought up when the set up was in place and that allowed LNS to justify the decision he made.

I would be surprised if no other SPL clubs saw it this way either, but surprised if they have the stomach to prolong the issue. At the next SPL meeting I expect Celtic to vote not to accept LNS findings but the other clubs to vote to put the issue to rest.

The best Celtic could get is an agreement to a postponement of a final SPL decision until the UTT finally rules on ebts as a finding for HMRC makes the payments in question irregular, whilst for the purpose of the LNS enquiry they were treated as regular and also ask UEFA for clarification of the registration/eligibilty interpretation Bryson gave.

As a PLC I think Celtic should be doing this but are more likely to be bullish if shareholders put forward a resolution demanding a postponement at the AGM until the UTT rules and UEFA clarification emerges.

However shareholders will need to put a resolution to the AGM mandating Celtic to revist LNS with a view to pursuing clarification and possibly compensation if the UTT finds for HMRC before or after the AGM.

If the UTT finds for HMRC I think LNS becomes irrelevant as Rangers will have officially made irregular payments and its a whole new ball game that reopens LNS findings re sporting advantage and the nature of the failure to supply full payment details.

Timing is everything but I think a resolution needs to get the necessary signatures by June to get a place on the AGM agenda.

The CST know the ropes on the resolution process.

On their own any resistance by Celtic would be portrayed as sour grapes, but if shareholders demand a challenge under due PLC process it strengthens Celtic’s hand.
