Good luck to Ange having to pick a strongest 11

Celtic certainly didn’t have the fluidity we saw at times last season, but they comfortably got the defence of their title underway against Aberdeen yesterday.  The visitors, playing their fifth competitive game of the season, did a decent job of denying Celtic space inside the box, but could scarcely construct an attack worthy of the name at any point during the game.

Earlier in the summer we discussed the need for a central defender to break through the lines, as Kristoffer Ajer did so effectively.  On one notably occasion in the second half, Stephen Welsh carried the ball forward 30 yards, causing havoc in the Aberdeen midfield.  We are going to face a lot of packed defences this season, overloading with a ball-carrying centre half is an important tool to assist.

Stephen’s more important contribution came when he headed home from a corner in the third minute.  He remains our most effective aerial target, as long as Christopher Jullien is not in the line-up.

After that promising start, the expected avalanche did not materialise.  Passing was too wayward.  Threat levels increased when Giorgios Giakoumakis, David Turnbull and Liel Abada replaced Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda.  The departing three had been unable to make a telling contribution to events.

Delighted with the win; the passing will improve.  Good luck to Ange having to pick a strongest 11.

I’m at a loss as to why Celtic v Hearts is still scheduled for Saturday 20th August when Hearts are in the draw for EL Play-off first leg on Thursday 18th.

Or do they wait for the actual draw before changing it to Sunday?

I’m interested because if it’s Saturday 20th I miss out.

    ===================================

I’m just throwing this out there, so to speak, but is it possible that the Monday night (22nd) is a possible option for moving our game v Hearts from the Saturday?

What if the police are seeking an alternative to have us playing in Glasgow on the Sunday whilst Sevco are playing in Edinburgh?

    Just a thought…

  6. Big John Hughes….

I was fortunate enough to witness “Big Yogi” wearing the Hoops on numerous occasions. like many others I was so disappointed when ” The Bear and Willie Wallace” were transferred to Crystal Palace. In their DEBUTs for Palace, I seem to remember Big Yogi scoring TWO GREAT Goals, and BOTH of his goals ended up in the Top Ten Goals for the BBC Prize at the end of that season ?

It MAY have been the first time any player had TWO Goals in that BBC Top Ten ?

One of his goals ( Which WON…Goal of the Season..I think ?), was so typical of John Hughes as he beat 2 or 3 players ( maybe more ?), and unleashed a 20 yarder into the Top Corner of the oppositions net ?

    Meeting Big Yogi…

It was around 2002/2003 Season, and I had some time to kill one day. I had left my “Then” Wife to do the Shopping in the Parkhead Forge while I would wait for her in a Pub on the London Road. The pub was called ” The Black Bull” near St.Micheals Chapel.

THATS how ANY Bhoy SHOULD do arrange the shopping to get done !

I hadnt been in THAT Pub since the Mid 1970’s, so no one knew me as I sat on a stool at the Bar.

After a few minutes, the Pub door opened and in walked Big Yogi” carrying a Crate/Box of Whisky from his Car. i couldnt believe my eyes when as Big Yogi returned to his Car and brought in more Cases, and I asked the Bar Maid about The Bear, and she CONFIRMED that Yogi DID indeed OWN the Pub.

In between going back and forth to get more Cases etc, Big Yogi took time to smile and say hello to me. After he was finished with the delivery, he stood at the end of the Bar and we started up a conversation.

I made it known to him that i was a Celtic Man, and that HE was amongst my HEROES in his playing days.

Big Yogi pulled up a Bar Stool and sat next to me to continue our chat. For the next 30 minutes or so, Big Yogi bought me a Pint of Beer and himself a Soft Drink as we chatted. Funnily enough, DESPITE his warm smile to me, and good hearted nature, The Bear was NOT a HAPPY MAN !

He told me that some ” JOBSWORTH” at Celtic Park called ” Mr DOUGLAS ? ” ( I cant remember his first name ) who was in the ” Role” of Security Officer etc, had severely CUT the ALLOCATION of Home Tickets that had been allocated to Former Celtic Players, INCLUDING The Lisbon Lions, that had been in place for many years.

Big Yogi was obviously NOT amused by the conduct of this Mr Douglas, and he told me that he and some other former Players were going to pursue this matter to some one at Celtic Park, with MORE Authority than this Mr Douglas at Celtic Park !

Big Yogi went on to tell me that this CHUMP ” Mr Douglas” was in FACT…..A well known HUN to those inside Celtic Park and former Players etc !

” Big Yogi said to me ” Jimmy, can you IMAGINE the HUNS ever having a ” TIM” in such an important role at Ibrox……….NAE CHANCE ” ?

Soon after, Big Yogi left the Pub with another warm smile and kind words, as I wished HIM and the other Lisbon Lions ” All the best in having their dispute with THAT Mr Douglas settled back in their favour etc ”

Anyway, after 30 minutes or so, we had parted company and soon after my ( Then) Wife came into the Pub to meet me with the Shopping., apologising for being late ( LOL)…but I told her not to fret as I bought her a Bacardi Breezer and another Pint for myself.

I told her about meeting Big Yogi, she didnt have a clue who I meant, but I soon filled her in…….

    JOHN HUGHES R.I.P.

What a player on his day, and who took the time to chat to a complete stranger. I was NO longer a stranger as soon as I had advised Big Yogi that I was a TIM !

My deepest condolences to Johns family and friends.

    YNWA ” FEED the BEAR”.

  7. I could be wrong…but I also seem to remember Big Yogi wearing his famous” SANNIES” on a frozen pitch against MORTON ?

The BEAR …RAN RIOT that day also.

    R.I.P. Big Yogi.

I was in the Celtic End that day with my primary school chum and his Dad.

We ” lost” his DAD in the Crowd as we were making our way down the steps and we stupidly tried to get back UP the stairs with thousands of Celtic supporters coming down above us……for us Two 11 year olds…it was a bit scary for a few minutes.

  17. Sad news about Big Yogi’s passing.

Many wonderful memories of his displays in the Hoops.

My favourite was against Leeds Utd in the European Cup semi final at Hampden.

On Saturday at Spartana v Celtic B with my 7 year-old grandson. He was wearing a vintage Celtic top. At half-time I took him to the little tunnel and told him to hold his hand out for high fives as the teams came back out.

He did just that and got a kind of sideways high-5 from most of the players plus Stephen McManus and Darren O’Dea. Got it on video.

    He is well chuffed.

  22. Big Jimmy,

I think you’re right about Big Yogi in his sannies. I think it was Morton, although my mate thinks it was Motherwell.

I have been in the Black Bull a couple of times on match days. It was where my Dad and his pal, Allan, used to go for years before every match at Celtic Park.
