Good luck to Ange having to pick a strongest 11

Celtic certainly didn’t have the fluidity we saw at times last season, but they comfortably got the defence of their title underway against Aberdeen yesterday.  The visitors, playing their fifth competitive game of the season, did a decent job of denying Celtic space inside the box, but could scarcely construct an attack worthy of the name at any point during the game.

Earlier in the summer we discussed the need for a central defender to break through the lines, as Kristoffer Ajer did so effectively.  On one notably occasion in the second half, Stephen Welsh carried the ball forward 30 yards, causing havoc in the Aberdeen midfield.  We are going to face a lot of packed defences this season, overloading with a ball-carrying centre half is an important tool to assist.

Stephen’s more important contribution came when he headed home from a corner in the third minute.  He remains our most effective aerial target, as long as Christopher Jullien is not in the line-up.

After that promising start, the expected avalanche did not materialise.  Passing was too wayward.  Threat levels increased when Giorgios Giakoumakis, David Turnbull and Liel Abada replaced Kyogo Furuhashi, Reo Hatate and Daizen Maeda.  The departing three had been unable to make a telling contribution to events.

Delighted with the win; the passing will improve.  Good luck to Ange having to pick a strongest 11.

  4. Sad to hear about the passing of john Hughes.

Always seemed to be a larger than life character who everyone talked about.

Too young to have seen him in his pomp for us but the stories never stopped.

And then he moved on to CP and he started with a bang.

Two goals that showed the talent that he had and the way that he played.

One of them got him second in the goal of the season competition — I think.

Great talent / huge character / big loss.

  5. ECh football — OK it is the start of the season — W/ford vs SU …

18 athletes plus RF / TC and 2 GK’s — does not make a good football match.

The game was shocking — all sweat and little talent.

It was a throw in competition with some fouls added in to spice it up.

Football to stun pigs with — not good.

No wonder MO’R fancied his chances up here.

I was fortunate, as a wee 10 yr old to be at two of Yogi’s best remembered games………8-0 v Aberdeen and the 2 penalties huns game League cup final.

His height and playing style made him a standout even on a bad day ….always direct.

Had a chat with him in Tesco(shettleston) a few years ago ended with a handshake and a compliment on my memories of him.

    A Celtic man indeed(s)

My best mate’s young brother played for St. Mirren in the sixties . He reckoned Yogi was a nightmare to play against , a big strong player with an unpredictable style and flashes of brilliance . Said he just couldn’ get near him .

Players of today seem stereotyped compared to the Jinky’s and Yogi’s of yesteryear .

Football has moved on but something’s been lost .

  11. Only just realised, from comments above, that the Hearts game on 20th is likely to move. I have flights over and back that day and didn’t see that one coming. I’m used to waiting for the Sky shift and our own Euro commitments. Schoolboy error.

On the game on Sunday, a decent perf with flashes of brilliance. Taylor and Welsh did well.

Only worry for me was the 3 Aberdeen breakaways (2 first half, 1 second half) which if repeated in Europe would have been goals. I’m sure Ange noted it

I can’t agree Aberdeen had no chances Paul67, they just messed them up.

    Great Walk On too

  12. Excellent article from Kevin Mckenna.

I’m sure Paul 67 will publish something similar soon.

As I said on SC this paragraph is very revealing

‘Later, Celtic agreed to pay the equivalent of the living wage but only after withdrawing an annual discretionary bonus agreement with club staff, a move which reeked of contempt. He reiterated the club’s policy of not recognising a trade union.’

  17. BADABING Regarding Douglas in charge of security inside Celtic Park I remember him well ,in fact I was driving past Almondvale Masonic Lodge Livingston when I noticed Big Douglas at the front door ,but to be truthful it didn’t surprise me ,one of the Brothers I knew very well and a big Celtic Fan was instrumental in the building of the Lodge,so as the story goes there are plenty of Celtic Fans as well as practicing Catholics are Freemasons .
