Great finals and the rebirth of Scottish football

1214

I am sure you have many great Scottish Cup final memories.  For me the best was Airdrieonians, twice.  My earliest memory of attending a final was the 1975 win, Kenny Dalglish, Paul Wilson and Pat McCluskey.  Watched big Billy and Jinky emerge from Hampden with the trophy after the game.

Then, of course, there was that huge final in 1995.  Six years without a trophy, Celtic were at their lowest point in decades and had already lost a final to Raith Rovers that season.  Beating Airdrieonians in that final is one of the most important victories in Celtic history.

By any measure, apart from Scottish Cups, Hibs are the fifth biggest team in Scotland, yet they haven’t won the Cup in 110 years.  Since then the Wright brothers headed to Kitty Hawk and tried to get ‘Flyer’ off the ground for the first time in history and Teddy Rosevelt made history by becoming the first US president to ride in a motor car.

If they can pull a good 90 minutes together today, Hibs might become the first club in Scottish footballs’ rebirth.  They have reclaimed thousands of fans in recent weeks and are proof that there is life outside Glasgow.

Good luck to them.

  1. Lennybhoy, excellent seat,as already stated, edge of centre circle, and exectutive seat right behind you, 7 along from me & daughter in 107, CC seat 1 & 2. Majority of Bhoys and Ghirls in this area been there since day 1.

  2. The defence is a bit of a dilemma. We need to have a settled strong defence who can play together as a unit . Certainly injuries have not allowed this but chopping and changing the defence aint good.

I genuinely never appreciated – their SPL finish notwithstanding – how shite this Hibs team was. What utter dross. Hibs 1 Hearts 4 54 mins.

  4. I hope Jan Mucha will be new Celtic keeper.

Found the news that he told Everton, it’s enough.

In April 2012, one of the Russian clubs offered 500 000 Euros.

Kaiserlautern offered 600 000 euros in May.

Mucha won’t cost much. Excellent keeper in wron club.

I also heard that Everton are interested in Craig Gordon.

Who knows what the future will throw up in terms of football- the bottom might fall out of the TV market, thereby levelling things up for the clubs from smaller nations? Who knows what benefits will accrue for us in terms of Champions League money if the huns are out of the equation? Maybe there won’t even be a Champions League- in five years time we might have a Pan European Super League for all the “top” clubs? How big can Celtic be in such a set up- feck, how big would we be if we were receiving the same TV money as Newcastle or Everton? Right now of course we can’t compete…but then Apoel FC managed to get to the Q/Finals of the Champions League…who knows?

  6. Wel, the Scottish season is over.

We won the league, Hearts the cup and Killie the wee cup. Motherwell got into the CL qualifiers. Dundee Utd played some decent football throughout. St Johnstone made the top six which is probably more than they expected. And St Mirren played some good stuff too.

So who needs … what were they called?

  7. Craig Gordons boady must be held the gither wi’ sticky back plastic, Mr Z’s goalie Jan M sounds like he could be a good buy..

Personally speaking I hope Fraser stays on a good deal to keep him between the sticks..

At least some of the faithful still believe:

“Bears, from a good source, Mr Green backed by substantial money from far east, idea is to play hard ball with the creditors, make sure they dont bleed us dry, once the cva sorted the real funding will come in, the newco will have no debt, backed with a huge war chest and the ability to get more money from the banks. Word is they are looking for some kind of asian league with the big clubs from europe like barca, inter, liverpool, the gers and bayern. Heard that drogba yakubu and lampard have already been spoken to before the european cup final. Good times ahead at last WATP.”

    What can I say?.

  9. Gordon j

    “if fully fit”

    That’s the point .

    He rarely is.

Martin O’Neill ( never a great judge of a keeper).

Never the less ,he has had a look at him on a daily business,he has had his club doctors and coaches asses him over an extended period.

He has decided that he is not even up to being a reliable 2nd choice keeper at Sunderland.

Gordon should only be considered on a pay as you play basis.

He was. Very good goalkeeper when fit.

His days of regular fitness appear to be behind him.

    Not for me.

We should invest in Fraser Forster.

He will play for England one day.

    TT

  10. If fully fit I fail to see how we could get a better keeper than Gordon- at his very best there are few better in the world. Reflexes of a cat, can command his area, great shot stopper, tremendous flexibility/agility, good communicator & good with his feet.

At present ( considering FF’s age) & if fit: Gordon is a more of the finished article than FF & a better keeper. But who know’s what FF is capable long term.

So, the ownership of them reverts to Agent Whyte if the CVA isn’t achieved. Do they not understand that green doesn’t actually own it ……

Anyway, Newco with green (which means liquidation anyway)

    Liquidation with Agent Whyte

    Either way ……..DOO DOOOO

Wonder if any bhuns will be watching the CL ….. Might be a wee bit painful for them…….

Watched the SC final today. Hibs started badly but managed to go in just 2-1 down at half time.

We all hoped for something a bit better in the second half.

However, no sooner had the game restarted, than it was spoiled by a referee who is either incompetent, biased, or just lacking in common sense.

By his mistake (or calculation), the Cup Final was spoiled as a spectacle and as a contest.

It is possible that Hearts would have won at the end of the day, without that glaring error. After the error, the match was over.

What I conclude after watching today is that the sinister thing is still there.

There was no way Hibs would be allowed a level playing field today.

    – How come Black wasn’t given at least a yellow for his elbow early in the first half?

    – How come the Hearts player wasn’t punished for Olympic diving at the “penalty” incident?

    – How come Fenlon was sent to the stand and why were Strathclydes finest so keen to escort him there near the end of the game?

    – How come the commentary that I heard wasn’t fair or balanced?

    I could go on.

The Hun may be dead (or dying), but the sinister thing is not.

Scottish football is a strange, strange place.

Great seat, I used to be in 106 just below DD my only concern was that

I got turfed out on occasions for sponsors and corporate when we

qualified for the champions league sections

The alternative they always tried to offload me in was the away support section

in the corner. Thats the only downside

Ikea. They are a bugger to assemble. They are useful for keeping all that unread mail in, you know the kind of thing – credit card bills, junk mail, demands for £60 plus million from the tax man, the documents from the last time you bought a used footballer from Hearts or Rapid Vienna. We’ve all got some of that crap lurking at the bottom of the war chest.

(Incidentally the Ikea War Chest Range comes in front loaded, back loaded, incremental, excremental and mythical)

  31. I still think Stan wasted his “peak” years at a mediocre club like Villa just because of the over hyped Premiership- Champions League/Europa football at Celtic can’t be sniffed at. Neither can winning things or playing in front of a huge & passionate fanbase. I suppose I’m thinking like a fan. Still can’t see the attraction in struggling every year for Premiership mediocrity whilst playing coma inducing football ala Villa, Bolton, Stoke etc…how can that be enjoyable?

But everyone will say you can enjoy being cannon fodder for Arsenal, Man U, Man City, Liverpool etc…I suppose Stan never imagined Villa could be so bad or sign a human Bannock Cake like Big Eck…
