Great finals and the rebirth of Scottish football

1214

I am sure you have many great Scottish Cup final memories.  For me the best was Airdrieonians, twice.  My earliest memory of attending a final was the 1975 win, Kenny Dalglish, Paul Wilson and Pat McCluskey.  Watched big Billy and Jinky emerge from Hampden with the trophy after the game.

Then, of course, there was that huge final in 1995.  Six years without a trophy, Celtic were at their lowest point in decades and had already lost a final to Raith Rovers that season.  Beating Airdrieonians in that final is one of the most important victories in Celtic history.

By any measure, apart from Scottish Cups, Hibs are the fifth biggest team in Scotland, yet they haven’t won the Cup in 110 years.  Since then the Wright brothers headed to Kitty Hawk and tried to get ‘Flyer’ off the ground for the first time in history and Teddy Rosevelt made history by becoming the first US president to ride in a motor car.

If they can pull a good 90 minutes together today, Hibs might become the first club in Scottish footballs’ rebirth.  They have reclaimed thousands of fans in recent weeks and are proof that there is life outside Glasgow.

Good luck to them.

  1. Thinking back to rat nevins outburst about the sectarian singing from the Celtic support at hampden, does anyone know if the club got any kind of response from the bbc?

I know a few posters were on it like a dog with a bone and took the complaint as far as they could, but i’m sure our club were making noises “behind the scenes” on the supports behalf.

Just wondering if the club got any further with the issue than our esteemed group of posters managed.

rat nevin, the willie column of punditry.

  2. Skacel is 32 and hasn’t got the scoring record his ‘memorable’ goals (Often against us) would lead you to believe.

Black is the latest media described ‘player with skill and temper to match’ Hun in waiting, who unfortunately won’t make it across the Clyde unless he’s visiting the Science centre.

    A Goodwillie-esque career awaits…

Got to feel sorry for the Hibs fans. Their players are poor, but they have barely broken sweat in this game. Only Griffiths putting in a shift for them.

no dout dallas will be gushin in the papers about how thompson handled the game superbly

    the refs a feckin joke

ref has ruined the game, first half , should have sent Black off for a straight red, not even a yellow. Allowed Hearts to foul without consequence, O’Connor very poor though. Bet wee Pat steams into ref at end!

  6. Blackpool playing all the football. Should be a few ahead.

All the pressure on West Ham but they’ve just struck the bar.

    Great game.

  7. The referee has made at most, maybe 10 mistakes, there’s barely a single Hibs player who had made fewer than 100 mistakes today.

If Pat Fenlon was offered 11 players who made as few mistakes as today’s referee as opposed to any of his current team, he’d take the refs every single day of the week.

Sometimes, the players just aren’t good enough.

If recent decisions that have went Hearts way are anything to go by; I think

    you could be spot on.

  9. in other words, today’s referee is much closer to world class than any of the hibs players

  10. Have to say it was a big ask of Hibs today. They have been very poor all season and needed all the luck to go their way today.

    Good night all……….

The wee annual sabbatical coming up commencing 30th May; we have well worn (Marxist) historical reasons for not including/working around the Tic belief scenario of Cup Finals, big game changers etc.,

Cebu – Singapore (four days to sample the delights of the place) – Manchester/Chester/Cheshire (could be a week or so, depends) – Larkhall (away and begone before doomsday but we’ll stop long enough to enjoy a pint or seven with some really great Celts) – then the dear green place, followed by a wee tour of Scotland/Ireland, and as the plan goes, in reverse re Larkhall, Glasgow, Cheshire, Singapore and back in Cebu for mid/early August……….

Hope to reacquaint and meet afresh some CQNrs along the way……….

    God Bless.

    Regards & Hail Hail

You’d think they’d have other things to worry about, but I suppose it’s like the parasites who attach themselves to people. They just like to be around human beings.

  17. This is why Paul, Phil & RTC have to grind out the demise of RFC all the way to the end. We know that Scottish football officials, pundits and press do not change their allegiances they just look for another form or way to fit their own order on ‘sport’ in Scotland.

Just goes to show how bad the hun is under meek oist when this Hibs team can get to a final, how many players was it the administrators got rid of again?
