Great finals and the rebirth of Scottish football

1214

I am sure you have many great Scottish Cup final memories.  For me the best was Airdrieonians, twice.  My earliest memory of attending a final was the 1975 win, Kenny Dalglish, Paul Wilson and Pat McCluskey.  Watched big Billy and Jinky emerge from Hampden with the trophy after the game.

Then, of course, there was that huge final in 1995.  Six years without a trophy, Celtic were at their lowest point in decades and had already lost a final to Raith Rovers that season.  Beating Airdrieonians in that final is one of the most important victories in Celtic history.

By any measure, apart from Scottish Cups, Hibs are the fifth biggest team in Scotland, yet they haven’t won the Cup in 110 years.  Since then the Wright brothers headed to Kitty Hawk and tried to get ‘Flyer’ off the ground for the first time in history and Teddy Rosevelt made history by becoming the first US president to ride in a motor car.

If they can pull a good 90 minutes together today, Hibs might become the first club in Scottish footballs’ rebirth.  They have reclaimed thousands of fans in recent weeks and are proof that there is life outside Glasgow.

Good luck to them.

I am unequivocal on this .

I have said that Rangers will be our mortal enemies forever.

The next time that they beat us (which I hope is a long way off).

It will not matter to me the company registration number.

They wil be Rangers players supported by Rangers fans playing at Ibrox.

    Fenian hating Huns.

There will be no consolation to me that it is not the original Rangers.

Now if the big hoose,is turned into Tesco, and Zombie united play at Paisley ,then that would be a different matter.

Liquidation means no debt to the Newco, and is to their advantage financially.

If Celtic had formed a Newco ,I would still be a Celtic supporter.

We would still be sitting in our stadium.

The trophies that we had won would still be in our trophy room.

Sorry unless that they shut down permanently then I see them as our mortal enemies.

I do live in hope that I am wrong, and oblivion awaits.

  2. Lennybhoy, if you view stadium, the seat is right on the top edge of the White “T” seats in C E L T I C, I am right on the edge of the “I”, hope this helps.

I may be looking to be move, 5 of us in 107, spread from seats in CC & DD, seats 1 to 8, trying to get all 5 together – in saying that Clydesdale bank had 2 seats which split us up, they may not renew – I have to contact ticket office end of next week

  3. Breaking news!

Celtic scouts are going to watch Iker Casillas and Manuel Neuer.

  4. My own take on the transfers in and out – I always get it spectacularly wrong. I had never heard of Wanyama, Hooper, Kayal, Izzi, Forster, Boruc, Nakamura – in fact any of the best buys we have had in the last 39 years and some months.

So I’m keeping my opinions to myself and hoping the next keeper we sign will be an unknown from the same source as all our other good buys (we get good buys, them ‘uns get goodbyes, he he)

So I’m chillaxed. Of course, as fitba fans people want to talk transfers, state opinions and have a good old verbal slug out about who we should and shouldn’t buy. Like reading it, but I am now admitting incompetence in this field of debate!!

    I’ll stick to flippant remarks……

I think Gary’s eyes are firmly on the CL next year, should he do well we could be pushed to keep him, at the moment he is a striker who has done well in the Championship and the SPL, Adkins likes him as they worked together before but my gut feeling is that the Celtic Magic is working on Gary and deep down he knows that Southampton is never going to replace that.

I’m a big fan of Hoopers as my nephews local team is Scunthorpe and he told me before we signed him what a good good striker he was, like a few of our Bhoys he will only get better.

I think Lenny has the magic too to convince his main men of what it is he is building at Celtic..

    Interesting times ahead my friend..

Hibs are rubbish, but what about the referee.Scottish football is becoming a laughing stock.

  8. TinyTim,

If Fraser Forster is for staying I would be delighted. But all of the talk seems to be that he sees his future down south.

I wonder if Craig Gordon would come on a pay per play deal with the promise of a longer term deal if he plays in enough games? If he could prove his fitness and get back to the keeper he was with regular games then we would have won a watch.

  9. What I will say about trnasfer strategy (not so much about individuals) is that we have to be prepared to see some of the better signings being sold when they get to their mid 20’s. It is the unfortunate truth that few of the team we have now will be with us in 5 or 6 years time. It appears we have some form of ‘buy em young, flog ’em at a profit, win along the way’ strategy.

It’s why I would be surprised to see Craig Gordon at the club in the summer. But like I say I am often wrong.

I expect us to keep the core group we have now for maybe 3 years unless any get ridiculous offers which suit club and player. They will then be reaching 25, 26. Hopefully we will have replacements coming through for them. I think we are going to see what a real conveyer belt of talent looks like – and most of it will be bought in young rather than trained from 14 years old, although again, we seem to be seeing promise there too.

Right, night out, rare night out, beckons. Awra best.

    Mon the Bayern.

  10. If Hooper was to score a few in the CL, especially ones like his awesome strike recently at CP against thems for our 3rd goal then his value would soar. It’s in his and the clubs interest that this comes to pass.

    HH

  11. They can have Mo for £3 Million…

Southampton are looking to bolster their

attacking options for next season and

Hooper is thought to remain their top target

Hooper scored 29 goals in all competitions

this season and he also won the Golden

Boot as the SPL’s top scorer as Celtic

    clinched the SPL title.

Celtic are determined to keep hold of their

star striker, but it is understood

Southampton are ready to test their resolve

with a bid of £7million for Hooper.

Fitness has to be a huge concern- ho much has he played in the last few years?

What kind of wage is he on- must be pretty hefty- freeing up wages to bring his own man in?

Managers are also notorious for immediately imposing politics on a new dressing room- they just might not fancy a player for some unknown reason. Our managers have done it with players: Strachan with Sutton/Hartson/Balde. Mowbray with McDonald/Caldwell/McManus. Lenny with Rasmussen/Juarez.

    It happens.

But fitness has to be a huge factor.

Its all conjecture in the end.

  14. Philbhoy - It's just the beginning! on

Why don’t we just sign a good, fit goalkeeper? For cash.

Pay per play not for me!

What if he breaks down in his first game for us and the window is shut?!

    Get your fingers out Celtic!!

We have the chance to put the huns away for a very long time!

Do we really want a “Craig Gordon” window?

    Naw, me neither!

    Makes sense tae me!

  15. Just been reading up on the badgeman and hadn’t’t been aware of his problems. I used to sit next to him at cp. Anybody know if he posts on here? Would love to pass on my good wishes.

  16. Gordon j /Wonkyradar.

It would have to be pay as you play on reduced wages for me.

He would be a big gamble.

On balance I would avoid him.

I am not optimistic that Forster will sign, but I rate him highly.

Would any particular ‘winner’ tonight favour Celtic’s CL seeding ?

  18. 67Heaven,

Doesn’t make any difference to us – both are seeded way above us.

If, let’s be positive when, we get to the group stage we will be in pot 4 unless quite a few teams higher up go out. There is a chance ofus making pot 3.

Got a tenner on 2-0 Bayern. More a case of what I’d like to happen rather than what is likely to happen. But hey-ho, you never know.

Doesn’t matter if I lose the tenner……I only care about Celtic anyway.

  20. Wouldn’t touch Craig Gordon with a barge pole, dreadful injury record in five seasons in England.

Limp wrested, vulnerable and a Bosman is not what we need, when we have Zaluska

    signed as a good backup.

  21. I’ve £30 on Chelsea to lift it, I hope I lose my money but if not (as I suspect) then it helps ease the pain of watching those ***** lift the trophy (though I’ll probably change the channel before then).

No difefrence to us, but Charles Green says that if they get a CVA and Chelsea win then Rangers go straight into the gruop stages.

    TinyTim,

Think Gordon’s injuries have been poorly presented – his broken arm (as a result of a clash with one of his own defenders) required the insertion of a plate which was removed 3 months later. Unlike an outfield player (e.g. Izzy out for 6+ months) he returned to training early and fractured the same arm – hence the re-repair of the same injury and the time out.

His tendon injury was a previous problem (but didn’t stop him being on the bench) – the repair surgery wasn’t carried out till the close-season and rehab kept him out for 8 months. By the time he was fit Sunderland had signed Westwood to understudy Mignolet.

His wages (for effectively a 3rd choice GK) were to be severely cut if he wanted a new contract – the main reason he’s now available!

  24. Glendaly

You don’t only care about Celtic as much as me. In fact I will be sitting in the dark for the next two hours, that’s how much I care about the Bhoys!

  25. Fortunes Favour Mibbes on

I think I’d be tempted to let Hoops go for c£8-10M. I’ve preferred Stokes to be fair, who overall this season was much more effective (he was one of the few who battled to turn around the downturn up until the 3-3 comeback against Kille). But Hoops partnered well with Sammy at the end of the season…..so a good time to get some good money for him….?

  26. MON is letting Gordon go cause he has Minnolott and Westwood and his budget will not allow him to have 3 first team goalies However if any 1 of the other 2 are sold MON will offer Gordon another contract

i like many on here have doubts about Gordons long term fitness and surely we must have scouted a better goalie but hey i thought Ruddy was rotten at murderwell and he is going to the euros with engerland so what do i know!!!

  27. fanadpatriot:

Agree on Westwood. Should have got him from Coventry when we had the chance.

  28. Craig Thomson – dreadful referee.

BBC Scotland – Hearts cheerleaders. Totally over the top commentary. Like listening to two fifteen year olds.

Hearts – horrible club. They could certainly take the mantle of the Huns come the final disintegration of the darnel.

Hibs – what a terrible team. How on earth did they make it that far?

  29. 67Heaven ... I am Neil Lennon..!!..Truth and Justice will always prevail on

    Thanks Gordon J
