Great finals and the rebirth of Scottish football

1214

I am sure you have many great Scottish Cup final memories.  For me the best was Airdrieonians, twice.  My earliest memory of attending a final was the 1975 win, Kenny Dalglish, Paul Wilson and Pat McCluskey.  Watched big Billy and Jinky emerge from Hampden with the trophy after the game.

Then, of course, there was that huge final in 1995.  Six years without a trophy, Celtic were at their lowest point in decades and had already lost a final to Raith Rovers that season.  Beating Airdrieonians in that final is one of the most important victories in Celtic history.

By any measure, apart from Scottish Cups, Hibs are the fifth biggest team in Scotland, yet they haven’t won the Cup in 110 years.  Since then the Wright brothers headed to Kitty Hawk and tried to get ‘Flyer’ off the ground for the first time in history and Teddy Rosevelt made history by becoming the first US president to ride in a motor car.

If they can pull a good 90 minutes together today, Hibs might become the first club in Scottish footballs’ rebirth.  They have reclaimed thousands of fans in recent weeks and are proof that there is life outside Glasgow.

Good luck to them.

  1. The one crumb of comfort from last night’s game was the thought of the discomfiture the huns would feel when Drogba so demonstrably blessed himself after scoring.

DUTCH defender Glenn Loovens is being lined up to become part of Tony Mowbray’s rebuilding job at the Riverside Stadium.

The 28-year-old, who has been capped twice by his country, is available on a Bosman and has been a long-time favourite of the Middlesbrough manager.

Loovens’ experience, ability and the fact he would not cost cash-strapped Boro a transfer fee makes him an ideal candidate to help the Championship side.

During Mowbray’s troubled time at Celtic, Loovens was his first-choice centre-half playing most of the matches during their eight months together in Glasgow.

Boro are desperate to sell Stephen McManus this summer, while Rhys Williams’s injury woes mean that he cannot be relied upon to last a whole season.

For all the money spent – it is curious to note that until recently they were a team on the wane. The players were being talked out of the club. Their glory days a myth.

With that in mind – If I was Di Matteo I would chuck it right now, because there’s nowhere else to go. And so much to live up to whilst travelling there.

I missed the first half of Hearts – Hibs game but tuned in just as the “penalty” was awarded at the start of the second half. Hibs’ fate was sealed. I switched off.

I watched most of the EUFA final and left the room with confidence after Muller’s goal. I wasn’t intending to go back into the room, but, was tempted, switched the game on again and immediately saw Drogba’s equaliser.

I went back out and returned just as extra-time finished. I never intended watching the penalties and flipped to another channel. After a fair length of time had elapsed, I thought I’d see what had happened. Bayern had succeeded with all their penalties and Chelsea had missed one. Great. I lingered and I shouldn’t have done. That’s when Bayern lost their nerve.

    Mea culpa.

I’m not sure what to do to make amends.

The striker is one of 15 foreign based players that have been included in the Sierra Leone squad that will also face Jordan on Saturday ahead of next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Cape Verde and Equatorial Guinea. Tunisia are the other nation making up Group B.

“Scottish football is screwed without us, they are so blind they cant see it – The SFA are link a bunch of drunken shepherds.

Without us they are nothing, like Liechtenstein or something.”

  18. I read Kitalba’s posts and debate with Margaret McGill last night with interest.

Kitalba’s assertion around supporters being faced with violence should Celtic refuse to support the Rangers attempts to get back into SPL etc got me thinking.

Many recent debates I have had with Celtic fans have indeed demonstrated a serious concern around the reaction from Rangers so called fans. I heve even heard that from the press.

It is a searing indictment on this country that people are scared to call for or do the right thing for fear of violence.

I’m pretty sure it’s not a unique view but I have suspected for quite a long time that the whole shooting match, including SFA/SPL prevarication, MSM positive spin Admin’s repeated cat from bag tricks, HMRC delays and Govt ‘support’ is basically to avoid taking the blame for the plug finally being pulled and or to avoid civil unrest.

I’m sure that high level talks have taken place between Scottish/UK govt, emergency services and that a crisis management plan is already underway if not yet visible.

From FF – counting past 2 was never easy:

    “3 Names, McConville and Brennan

These 3 nutcases held a night in Blantyre Knight of St Columba hall on the 18th May. The night was for charity apparently but was held to discuss the death of Rangers.

A few snippets from the discussion include:

“McConnville, a relative arrivisteto this online saga, will regularly provide a lengthy legalist treatise oneach chapter of the Rangers disintegration”

“This was a room full ofdecent middle aged folk that had been born into the old Scotland with the “backof the bus” arrangements that validated the Ibrox poison”

“Some of them still can’tget their head around that the citadel of anti-Catholic and anti-Irish hatredin Scotland is about to die.

They heard the same messagefrom the three of us.

    Rangers are going to die.”

“The old culture whereCatholics with Irish surnames were despised and allocated the shitty end of thestick is at an end.

Rangers are a symbol ofthat old culture and it is fitting that they will soon die.”

Excellent article, noticed these two paras:

Feb 2004: The Stadia Group, founded by former Bank of Scotland treasurer and deputy general manager Gavin Masterton before his retirement from the bank in 2001, collapses into receivership owing the bank a reported £28m. Kevin McCabe’s Scarborough Development Group steps in to mop up the mess, prompting complaints to the FSA about the bank’s abuse of off-balance-sheet vehicles to massage its bad debt position (see Keane’s last stand).

Sept 2004: A formal complaint is lodged with John Tiner, chief executive of the FSA, that HBOS is using a lattice-work of off-balance sheet vehicles part-owned by favoured corporate borrowers, including Scarborough Development Group owner Kevin McCabe, to disguise its true corporate bad debt position and mislead investors.

That’ll be Kevin McCabe current owner of Sheffield Utd, previous employer of Charles Green.

    Ever-decreasing circles!
