Great finals and the rebirth of Scottish football

1214

I am sure you have many great Scottish Cup final memories.  For me the best was Airdrieonians, twice.  My earliest memory of attending a final was the 1975 win, Kenny Dalglish, Paul Wilson and Pat McCluskey.  Watched big Billy and Jinky emerge from Hampden with the trophy after the game.

Then, of course, there was that huge final in 1995.  Six years without a trophy, Celtic were at their lowest point in decades and had already lost a final to Raith Rovers that season.  Beating Airdrieonians in that final is one of the most important victories in Celtic history.

By any measure, apart from Scottish Cups, Hibs are the fifth biggest team in Scotland, yet they haven’t won the Cup in 110 years.  Since then the Wright brothers headed to Kitty Hawk and tried to get ‘Flyer’ off the ground for the first time in history and Teddy Rosevelt made history by becoming the first US president to ride in a motor car.

If they can pull a good 90 minutes together today, Hibs might become the first club in Scottish footballs’ rebirth.  They have reclaimed thousands of fans in recent weeks and are proof that there is life outside Glasgow.

Good luck to them.

  1. Chelsea; The rangers of england, anti Irish, bnp supporters. A cup bought with the blood of Russian peasants who suffered at the hands of the Nazi’s only to have their natural resources stolen by Abromovich and used as his ego trip, paying mercenaries to kick a bag of wind around a field.

Why’s everyone wearing tin hats tonight?? Don’t you know that Cech’s compression hat is the new tin hat? Compression is the new tin.

I think a few years ago there might have been an element of truth about a connection between RFC and some Chelsea supporters but others on here have pointed out from speaking to Chelsea supporters it is only a tiny element and most Chelsea fans would be horrified and embarrased at being linked with RFC.

However, I think it’s something that RFC have tried to nurture – gives them somebody else to deflect blame onto when their fans riot (Manchester).

All tonight’s game does is this – it consolidates my belief that the achievements of the immortal John Stein, and his fearless Lions shall never be equalled, let alone bettered.

A good point re the huns and their fickle banned/follow list.

There’s been a good point made a couple of times though re where the Chelski funds have come from.

It highlights the Barca model, give the club back to the supporters and make sure the finances reflect the support imo…although that would likely need addressed quickly enough as well due to glory hunting….finance in football is not an easy thing to manage fairly I suppose.

  7. Barca are hardly the poster child, they are massively in debt. They’ve been run pretty bad considering how much income they generate.

I expect the mighty Celtic of Glasgow to be dining at the top table, next season, once again. And with Neil Lennon at the helm.

We are capable of beating any side in European football, particularly at Celtic Park.

    Good times.

I`m sure everything you say is correct.

It`s just the generalisation that grinds.

Every club,I`m sure has supporters they wish they didn`t have, including perhaps ourselves.

I detest Rangers because of the Club and it`s ethos.

That club succours and supports the lunatic element.

Can we say the same about Chelsea?

Many years ago,Arsenal were referred to as the Rangers of England.

Barca’s debt is not as bad as made out when related to their annual turnover. They are owned and invested in by their supporters, and they are a good example of where FFP rules will work. Barca invest heavily in youth training which is the way forward for the game. When you consider their debt, think about how much the sale of Messi would wipe off of the top figure.

One of my son in laws is a Chelsea supporter,do you think I should phone him, tonight, tomorrow or when,he is not one of THEM,but, but,I think I will give him the benefit of the doubt.Watching that tonight ,we are not far away, but, the question is ?,would you want to win, playing in a negative fashion.

As one who was in Lisbon and Milan,I would say NO.

  12. skyisalandfill on

Was speaking to skyisalandfill junior tonight about football finances as usual having become radicalised over the last few years by QNC. I also hold this website responsible for my dyslexia.

I digress. The loon, who is into NBA explained how a degree of competition is maintained by wage caps that if exceeded are puitatively ‘taxed’ by the governing body.

There are also rules that ensure that perennially lower Placed teams get a bit of leeway on this. Some of this I like on a pan European. Basis. And a safeguard to ensure that the uber rich didn’t just take the hit but also some safeguard for that that I e forgotten cause I have been drinking wine and Whisky

If I can correct my earlier point about PSV – I should have said that they never won a single game in the quarters, semis and final. All these rounds were won on penalty kicks. I don’t think that’s the way to win trophies.

As for Chelsea, I agree there is something distasteful about a club who don’t have a big support, haven’t won the League since 1955 to be suddenly taken over by a multi billionaire Russian oligarch who pays off their debts and writes out huge cheques to acquire top players from all over the world so that they can become a major force in England and in European football. Man City’s position is somewhat similar.

    Poor old Chelsea indeed.

  15. Barca debt is linked to TV money which they are about to lose, plus the tax on wages is changing in Spain,

They’d actaully be better off not signing anyone and sticking with home grown players, but they have a knack of spending big on players then not playing them as they already have someone better.

They also have the highest wage bill of any sports team in the world, even more than Madrid. That’s not way to run a successful business.

No affiliation to Chelsea, they also cost me money tonight but the large majority

of their fans who I met while living in London were ok.Pleased for them tonight.

As for the match, the stats prove Bayern controlled the game but how many

saves of note did the Chelsea keeper make ? HH

  19. Enjoy the golf, I’ve got a 7.49 tee off time tomorrow :O) gonna be tough was up at 6.30 this morning for the golf and played terribly so sleeping on the couch doesn’t seem to improve your game.

Chelsea..first London club to win Champions League/European Cup..we’ll never hear the end of it. Lampard and Terry are gonna be wheeled out every year now like Goeff Hurst and Martin Peters once were. Lets hope Ukraine Sweden and France are up for it next month.

Fair enough amigo. Can’t go on as it does then, can it? Unless the top 20 clubs in Europe can all find beneficial billionaires?? Debt is becoming anathema to the future, so it can’t go on as per… One or two clubs breaking the FFP rules while the rest struggle to pay off debts isn’t likely to work in the favour of the rich clubs when it comes to the creation of/ observation of rules.

Anyway I hope the many Chelsea supporters not affiliated to RFC have a great night of celebration. I’m still celebrating our League win and I have a bottle of Champers chilling in the fridge to celebrate the demise of our southside foes.

Goodnight and God Bless CQNers and your loved ones.

  25. The EPL will end up with who’s the richest owners deciding the league positions, then the CL will follow suit. PSG and Malaga are coming soon to a CL final near you.

It does stand to reason that Nazi gold is still permeating the economy. Godwin knew this and thought he was being clever by simply identifying the fact the any ongoing discussion will also eventually lead to politics > finance > US economy > Nazi gold.

While this was all a work in progress…. a team of mhen from a 13 mile radius aroon Celtic Park went on to win the European Cup which in 45 years would cost other clubs hunners of millions to achieve.
