Great finals and the rebirth of Scottish football

1214

I am sure you have many great Scottish Cup final memories.  For me the best was Airdrieonians, twice.  My earliest memory of attending a final was the 1975 win, Kenny Dalglish, Paul Wilson and Pat McCluskey.  Watched big Billy and Jinky emerge from Hampden with the trophy after the game.

Then, of course, there was that huge final in 1995.  Six years without a trophy, Celtic were at their lowest point in decades and had already lost a final to Raith Rovers that season.  Beating Airdrieonians in that final is one of the most important victories in Celtic history.

By any measure, apart from Scottish Cups, Hibs are the fifth biggest team in Scotland, yet they haven’t won the Cup in 110 years.  Since then the Wright brothers headed to Kitty Hawk and tried to get ‘Flyer’ off the ground for the first time in history and Teddy Rosevelt made history by becoming the first US president to ride in a motor car.

If they can pull a good 90 minutes together today, Hibs might become the first club in Scottish footballs’ rebirth.  They have reclaimed thousands of fans in recent weeks and are proof that there is life outside Glasgow.

Good luck to them.

I wonder if tonight’s result might indirectly help us ?

Can’t help think Fraser Foster is delaying any decision until he sees if Tim K moves on to Spurs , and thus he gets a shot at No1 at Newcastle. Of course if Spurs aren’t in CL, with resultant monetary losses, and we have already seen Harry’s disdain for Europa …….it might just work in our favour….??

  2. Football is not the winner after the 2 cup finals today.

Very sad. At least we have Celtic playing the Celtic way as much as possible and really, what else do you need? Can’t wait for the close season and kick off for the next league race.

Aw aye, the euros will hopefully be pretty good anaw

We could realistically get a nice wee run in the CL but I’ll take bein papped out by Barca (new management allowing) so we can go on and win the Europa. The Big One can wait til the next year :)

life ain’t what it used to be..

    god bless.

I’m off… the kids showed me tofay what football was about

The team from Cumbernauld had good players but they played the long ball.. that id the reason I don’t get involved on football…

  5. Fair play to Chelsea.

They have beaten Barca over two legs, then beaten Bayern in their own stadium.

If it were Celtic we wouldn’t care about the performance.

    Pleased for Frank Lampard.

45 years later and a billion pounds money laundered out of his own country, you’ll never beat Celtics’ achievements Abramovic.

No class, very little football and a ton of luck.

    Meaningless.

David Icke’s a Chelski fan though is he no? Thist would confirm the rumours that he’s a right wing plant to make the truth unbelievable :))

What ‘s the pre-season plans? Any info?

Great result for English football which some of us aspire to join.

Chelski win big cup. Engerlund win Euros. Lizard people remove their masks. A David Icke treble.

  12. Man U were totally outclassed in the two finals they won. Less so against Chelski. But I think the blues still hit woodwork 3 times in Moscow & most of the play. The bayern game in barca was all one way traffic up until injury time when Man U got their only shots on target.

But as I say the record books show only a victory.

Celtics win in 67 was a victory for all romantics…and for all those who love the beautiful game.

    An immortal moment.

Chelskis like so many others will be remembered only in the record books.

‘Hibs fan’ Pat Nevin has now taken rewriting history to a new level by talking about being the Celtic 6 : Hibs 1 cup final

Was he there with Sean Connery ?

    What a *****

Gies peace. They were rank. An absolute disgrace. Bayern were far the better team.

If this is acceptable, we should chuck it.

Romantic victory is a good description (you have an endearing and skillful verbosity amigo :))

A special win, and you’re bang on the nail, there have been few if any that can compare to it from a true football perspective.

Bollocks, just realised the Kevin Bridges prog on BBC1 is the full stand up show! Hope it’s on catchup/ Iplayer. For a 23 yrs old, that bhoy is v clever. Big future ahead.

I think it’s very disingenuous to decry what Chelsea have just achieved. What they lacked in terms of pure footballing ability, they more than made up for with courage, determination and a never-say-die mentality. If you beat the much lauded reigning champions en route to the final and then win the thing on the home turf of your opponents then you deserve it. End of.

Well done Chelsea and Roberto di Matteo

  22. Lennon n Mc....Mjallby on

I hope all the Scottish huns enjoyed that, its the closest they’ll ever get lol

Have to agree with Tiny Tim,if you can beat Barcelona n take Bayern to the last kick you deserve your win and to be fair the boy Lampard has worked hard in his career but Im glad Celtic won it without spending obscene amounts of money,it definitely taints the competition nowadays.

Well done for your efforts Sir David Murray.

  23. There’s difference between plucky underdog, bravely defending for their lives and what Chelsea did tonight. Bayern are a very average team yet missed chance after chance, they eventually gave up and played like a team that knew they’d get beat on pens.

The Chelsea team was full of players getting paid £100k a week and they served up that.
