Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

If Celtic don’t win the League there is no chance Peter Lawell will be here next season. There will be precious few season ticket holders either.

    “Are you serious?”

Ha ha, that made me laugh, coming from someone prepared to condense the reign of Martin O’Neill, the greatest since Jock’s, into the 90 minutes of light-grey Sunday.

Why don’t you save your ire for the team, now deid, which was playing 40 miles to the east of Motherwell, packed full of improperly registered players, and for the football ‘authorities’ who let them away with it?

My records show that, applying the rules to seasons 2003 and 2005, Martin, the Miracle Worker, was the last Celtic manager to win 5-in-a-row.

If you doubt the validity of these records, check the SPFL website, with their “founded 1872” Newspeak.

Last I looked, my records still show a 36 point turnaround against financially-doped cheats in his first season, with a treble thrown in for good measure.

And we all know how easy they are to achieve in Scoddland.

    Did I mention Seville?

  3. I’m with Tnt and Spikey

Brown not his best on Sunday or in the matches leading up to it but the abuse and vitriol directed at him on here is completely over the top.

He has given his all for Celtic and if we remember back to last year and the CL qualifiers we were a shadow of a team without him in it. Some might say he has been handsomely rewarded but he would have secured more dosh at Newcastle with a tenth of the angst. Give the Broonie a rest and use him sparingly.

Still gutted at result. We have restored the same flies sense of entitlement. As someone has said on here Res 12, stripping of titles in the aftermath of the BTC etc will be perceived as a case of sour grapes. We needed to put them back in their box.

Aberdeen’s performances should not come into the equation.

We have lost 3 league games, drawn 7, and been knocked out of 2 domestic cups – this to me is stuttering over the line.

We have also been horsed out of 2 European competitions, without winning a single match in the Europa League.

Tie these in with the fact that the football has been nowhere near entertaining enough.

I agree that a successful season can’t be judged purely on the number of points we win a league by, but to suggest we’re at risk of making this job potentially unattractive and a no-win situation is perhaps a bit strong.

For me, the frustration / anger / calling of heads is not merely down to the defeat on Sunday, this has only added the tip to the iceberg.

  7. Our captain looks burnt out. He has given his all for us. He deserves our thanks. If a rest over the summer is enough, then fine. I would still have him at Parkhead, even if he can’t command a regular start. He seems to be keen on developing the young lhads. If he is good at that, I wouldn’t hesitate in giving him a role at Lennoxtown.

  8. Some of the mysoginistic, chauvinistic, lads mag adverts are bad enough…but a depth has been plumbed when CQN is promoting a £5.00 coin to mark Brenda’s birthday. …. mind you it’s a bargain at only £5.00 …. (free p&p)…. Haud me back…. Celtic Queeny’s Numbnuts. :( :(

  9. Some of the abuse directed at Scott Brown is over the top, but the fact remains that season after season he has found it difficult to achieve with any degree of regularity or frequency the basic footballing requirement of passing to a team mate. He’s got spirit, balls, chutzpah, devilment, call it what you will but as a footballer he lacks brains (see ‘fly kick at Neymar’) and an accurate pass. Which, for a midfielder especially, is a deficient skill set.

Interesting reading back all the threats about non renewal of season tickets.

Those not renewing for footballing reasons, there will be a new manager in the summer and hopefully good dealings in the transfer market, aren’t you at least jumping the gun being so adamant about non renewal? Begs the question also – do you only support good Celtic teams? Where do you draw the line?! We’ll see this lot when we’re back in the CL I suppose.

Those not renewing for other reasons, and this is not to query the validity of your concerns as that has been done plenty of times in recent months, but given that a number of you have, on more than one occasion, taken the time to go into great detail about why you won’t be back until employee x/y/z leaves, Celtic make a statement about Sevco, etc… if you care that much about Celtic and are sure in your convictions that your reasoning is valid, shouldn’t you be outside the front door on a matchday making your concerns known, if you cared that much? Can’t be less productive than going round in circles debating on CQN, and some of you clearly have the time and ideally would be inside the ground under normal circumstances, so…find it hard to fathom the meek acceptance that you won’t be appearing at Celtic games any time soon.

I say meek acceptance, there is nothing meek about your online postings/reasoning which, again, I am not questioning here, but anyone can talk a good game online. Its hardly tantamount to doing something about it. Strongly worded letters to Peter Lawwell won’t make headlines or raise awareness.

  13. Delia can have no complaints. He has completely failed to deliver what he promised, we don’t play fast attacking football nor are we super-fit.

His tactical philosophy appears to have completely went out the window this season and we don’t play a structured pressing game and leave massive gaps for teams to play through us. Not only does he continually play players out of position he also perseveres with his favourites when badly out of form, in particular Brown & Johansen. The terrible form of Johansen has been a big part of the reason why our 4-2-3-1 has failed so badly this season. Couple that with a completely unbalanced midfield and lack of proper defensive midfielders to play the 2 it’s no surprise our midfield is dysfunctional.

  14. Years ago my brother said to me he didn’t think he loved Celtic as much as those who posted on here. Wasn’t true then and certainly isn’t now.

I’ve never had a go at anyone on here and I’m not going to start now but in the name of the wee man get a grip , have we forgotten how much crap our parents and for some their grandparents had to endure supporting Celtic .

They stuck together, toughed it out and saw good times return.

We are going to win the league and it’s been far from vintage but it’s the same league , same championship that every Celtic team has won and we should celebrate like always.

Sunny in Glasgow too. One of those days when the City is just staggering……or it could be that the City isnae moving and it’s me that is staggering.

Reminds me of Munich and a night on the booze with Dominic Diamond after we handed Bayern a last gasp win.

Dominic was weaving his way across the bar with a tray of drinks when he skited on the wet floor but miraculously didn’t spill a drop.

The pigtailed Teutonic waitress gave him a stare and clippingly said….”sir you are staggering”….

Dominic replied…”yer no bad looking yersel hen”

We’re not there yet I agree with that, but anybody looking at what we’ve achieved and the manager’s that left. Would definitely be wondering why. It’s not like any of the departures have involved our manager being plucked by a ‘bigger’ team leaving us with a hefty compensation payment is it?

Another question. What is the mark of entertaining football? Is it goals? We’ve scored 78 a quick glance around Europe suggests only PSG and Barca trump us on that. Is it the style of the goals? Lots of passes, back-heels skills etc. I’ve seen quite a lot of that too. I’ve seen daring passes attempted. Many of which don’t come off but that’s where we are if every one of them happened the players would be getting offers for bigger leagues.

It’s never as bad as people make out and for all they claim not to pay attention to the MSM a lot of the views aired are eerily similar.

Once again I agree that RDs time was up, but it had little to do with style or entertainment and a lot to do with him not learning not to judge teams by the league they play in (as it seemed to me he does). Never mind losing the dressing room, he’d lost the fans and that’s harder to come back from.

If you had of been watching what was happening on the park over recent weeks instead of posting and re posting stuff about Res 12 you would be in a much better place.

Open your eyes, watch the games, ask questions about the recruitment policy. Instead of a wooly coulda/shoulda view.

We are now told by the media in Norway that our Coach is gone. Nothing from Celtic. Out of respect for Ronny? I honestly hope so because he is apparently a very decent man.

I’d hate to think that our Board have no idea what to do.

  21. Disney really matter now wether a new manager comes in now or at the end of the season.

    Its too late.

They have a place in europe.

The feelgood factor and wave of elated hate filled pseudo-emotion will probably drag them to the title next year as we rebuild for the umpteenth time.

3 million are behind them in scotland. The establishment club. British unionism will see a huge surge because of the result they got. Im already sering more union flags and newco shirts in the malls and streets.

Added to Brendas 90th and so called ‘re–birth’we will witness one big ‘last night at the proms’ for the next 6 months at least.

To think all this could have been avoided too.

Spot on. Those bumping their gums about not renewing tickets citing footballing reasons only are spoilt brats. Not to mention seriously jumping the gun. Big changes in the summer could deliver great momentum.

Others with potentially legitimate gripes about the running of the club may also be jumping the gun. Whether they are jumping the gun or not my question to them is why aren’t they outside the front door making their voices heard? Can’t be less productive than making several posts in a forum representing a small % of Celtic fans which ultimately will be lost in cyberspace.

  23. My friends in Celtic,

Celtic supporters buy Season Tickets for many reasons. Many buy in the knowledge that they will only make a handful of games, but buy they do.

A winning Celtic team playing football the Glasgow Celtic is easy to support. It’s when circumstances are not so rosy that our true level of support can be determined.
