Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

  6. As much as I disagree with Charlie Nicholas’s past bitterness towards the club, today he has hit the nail on the head describing our problems. He for once sounds like a genuine supporter again.

Going forward, the next appointment is crucial, we cannot afford to make another mistake.

  9. Prediction – If, Ronny blows the league(I hope he dizny)….Celtic will go into administration before Christmas 2016.

    No enough reality oan here….

  10. Gary67,

In times like this it’s always worth bearing in mind who has been talking to the press. Neil was pretty ubiquitous (chip?) last week… does make you wonder if he has been lined up…

  11. I so wanted Ronny to do well. Sunday was the final straw for me though. Bad enough that it was Sevco, but it was also another big game at Hampden lost.

What I can’t understand is that if club legends were working against him how that affected his team’s performances. Assuming of course that they are no longer at the club.

This was the report from Norway, and although it would not have been great to hear criticism, I can’t figure out how team selection/tactics even hunger etc would be impacted.

As for any players who worked against him. They need sold. Period.

  12. CultsBhoy can not relate to Celtic Board ambitions on or off the park on

CFC Board are amateur es suffering from delusion if they honestly believe that statement will satisfy the supporters. Clearly this paves the way for speculation on potential successors. I think SBs will be better sold on the basis of a confirmed name who meets expectations.

Lawwell from a position of strength last time took a very ‘I’m the boss I’ll decide and let the you know’ approach before producing a very underwhelming down sized appointment.

I agree with previous posters who highlight DDs superior record in identifying winners.

My sense is Lawwell’s insecurity/control creamery make him fearful of strong managers- preferring a subordinate type. DD strikes me as having a bigger more confident approach that allows him to select and remunerate bigger characters.

So big name required and an open message that the CEO will lead business and the manager will lead all football matters .

  14. Sad day to see our manager having to go. Inevitable, I know. Hope to God we get someone who will stand no nonsense. Ronnie was too good a man to be a really successful manager in Scotland.

I’m sending something bigger in the pipeline … Hence I was intrigued at the prospect of Paul68’s reference to Big Picture article …

    3 things I expected

    1. Change of Mansger

    2. Naming of successor

    3. CEO change – this could be replacement or realignment of responsibilities.

Macjay, Scrolling back through the moon howler shift, I saw a few replies from you to a post I made last night.

I except you are British and I’m Irish. You refer to an atrocity committed by Republicans. If you want to trade in atrocities, I can assure you that my side have suffered 800 years of atrocities, so don’t go there.

    ===========================================================================

Hard to understand why you came to the conclusion that I wanted to “trade in atrocities.”

You specifically mentioned a phrase I had used and suggested it was something I had accused two individuals of.

I simply pointed out that most certainly was not the case and was related specifically to the horrific event which I referenced.

Had you not made an unfounded accusation , then I would not have “gone there.”
