Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

Having mishandled our history so spectacularly over the past 5 seasons, PL could at least head off to pastures new without making another strategic error in choosing another mistake of a manager. Fool me once….

However if he would like to attempt to salvage some legacy in addition to his bonuses, I think any of the following realistic options would be good:

    Sean Dyche

    Brendan Rodgers

  10. Why is Delia pish and Warburton great?

Why does the media not give Delia credit for winning the title? They didn’t last year and they won’t this year if we win it.

They use the budget versus the competition as the reason.

Why is that so different to Warburton who is lavished with praise despite the same circumstances?

Delia does have to go but he has been on a hiding to nothing.

Players believe the media and in turn don’t back Delia meaning his coaching and tactics (whether better than Warburton’s or not) are not followed.

This is not about Delia but about the culture of this country and the fact the media have been working against us since our inception. Don’t forget it.

“The first on the shopping list of the ‘Hoops’ must be a front that is associated with Leigh Griffiths (scorer and star of the team). Celtic has a specific market in which it operates. They like to hire young players they can sell pulling out a big profit. at 22, Henriquez fits there. He also plays for Dinamo Zagreb, registered trademark. the Balkans are a market that Celtic has paved quite often, because there is real talent at an affordable price ” publishes the “Daily Record”.

“The Chilean international Henriquez has scored eight times for Zagreb this season and has enormous potential. The Chilean star renovated with leaders of the Croatian league until 2020, but its market value is 4.6 billion euros (US $ 6 million), which fits into the budget (Celtic), “the paper reported.

Who also make up the list are the Swedish reinforcements Anton Kinnander (Helsingborgs IF) and Shay Logan (Aberdeen). The idea of Celtic explained from Britain, is reinforced at the highest level, as measured again this season with its classic rival, Glasgow Rangers, team returning to the top flight after four years. Dinamo Zagreb and would have received the offer by Henriquez and all would be well under way. Angelos apparently not reach the U, like Mauricio Pinilla and Carlos Carmona, the other wishes Beccacece.

I’m not saying we didn’t make mistakes, far from it but at the end of the day if guys don’t take guilt edged chances then you leave yourself open to losing against inferior opposition. Any in depth analysis of either of the games mentioned would highlight the ratio of chances to goals from the teams participating.

IMHO it was the players of Celtic that were the main culprits on Sunday.

I really don’t see the point in getting into the whys and where’s etc as people have decided where the blame lies, they had already made up their minds before Sunday tbh.

While at the game a few things about the tactics left me wondering what the plan was, after watching it again on TV I ended up with a completely different point of view to that I had immediately after leaving the stadia.

Of all the issues that surfaced as a result of that performance was some of our players lack of fitness, we were basically 2 men down going into extra time.

  16. Eddieinkirkmichael

The fitness has been an issue all season .

    Are we overtrained?

Or is what looks like a poorly spaced and badly implemented system leaving the players with to much ground to cover.

I’m not sure what it is as we have very little off the ball movement when in possession.

The way you conduct business, the way you treat family, what you expect from family (& business associates), how you relate and treat strangers, your notion of civility and just about everything else in life. All political.

    Let me be succinct:

Optimists and open minded people define politics as the Art of the Possible.

Pessimists and close minded people define politics as the systematic arrangement of hate.

  19. We live in a Party Politics Paradigm, where everything is labelled as one party or the other. Its insane and designed to divide. That is all. To divide. Life is more complex than left or right, right or wrong. Ironically, tonight the Primaries are taking place in NY and I am surrounded by competitive people arguing over nonsense, but significantly many are rejecting the old democrat/republican monopoly, as they see it for the con it is. Two sides of the same dominating coin. Trump and Sanders. Farage and Corbyn. People are angry and looking for any alternative to the Old Firm, on both sides of the Atlantic.

You say my criticism of your post was personal, maybe it was personal, but it was not a criticism, it was an appeal for perspective, an appeal to pull yourself away from party politics, and recognize that politics is profoundly personal, an ethical and moral position, not one subservient to some group who studied demographics for the pursuit of power. The label of a ‘party’ is an illusion designed to set one friend against another, and that was never truer than it is today.

Stories of Celtic buying a decent striker is Lawwell preparing the ST sales. It’s all smoke and mirrors. We don’t have a manager for next season so who is making these signings.

Our track record of signing strikers recently has been bargain basement and loans. When you only play one every week you don’t need many.

Celtic will sell before they buy this summer window. The only asset we have is Tierney and even Lawwell dragging him kicking and screaming to join an English club wouldn’t work. The Bhoy would refuse and continue to play for the jersey.

Lawwell has nothing left to sell …only STs.

  26. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

    CORKCELT on 19TH APRIL 2016 11:28 PM

Macjay, The Politics thing works both ways. There is no doubt that a large section of the Celtic Support feel a strong allegiance to those who fought for Irish Freedom. I would also say that the vast majority of Irish Celtic Supporters I know would be more Republican orientated then those who follow EPL for example. Apart from the Irish Politics I would say that these same people tend to be more left wing in their General Political beliefs as well.

There are very natural historical reasons why this situation exists, I’ll spare you the analysis but you know Irish & Celtic History as well as I do.

If the Green Brigade do make a Statement with a Banner it is construed by you of imposing their view on other Celtic Supporters, if they are prevented from making a Statement it is construed by them as having someone else’s opinion imposed on them.

I myself hold very strong Political views and did for most of my life support the physical force movement in Ireland, your attitude is that these people are murdering bastards. You may well find my views reprehensible which is your right but you haven;t walked in my shoes or more importantly in the shoes of men like Macanbheatha & Big Bones to name just two but yet you feel it’s OK to refer to them as murdering bastards.

I have never sang a Political song at a Celtic Game, I have never tried to use my Celtic connections to promote my views, if there is a debate on here I’ll give my view the very same as you do. There is absolutely nothing different in what HT or I do or say compared to what you do or say. You have a view which you are entitled to, we may have an alternative view at times but that is OK too.

Neither of us can claim the soul of Celtic,, It’s a broad Church and so it should be. To you the IRA may have been murderers and the British Army & Security Forces the good guys but others might see it the other way round. Our views are shaped by our life experiences and its as simple as that.

For the record I now consider that the war is over and I am a very strong supporter & advocate of the Peace Process, however that does not mean that I and I suspect HT are prepared to turn our back on our History.

I`m flattered that you are interested in my opinion .

    I`ll start at the end… ….. ” imposition of views is a 2 sided coin ”

    By whom on whom ?

If you`re speaking of me , then I have not the slightest interest of imposing my political views on anybody , particularly my children .Happy to tell them my opinion and encourage them to make their own minds up.

( The lessons of the Hitler Youth spring to mind.)

    ——————————————————————————–

The Celtic support Republican and left wing. I`ve known that all my life. Never been a problem for me. Still is not. The one association that you do not refer to is Catholicism .

Now that may not be of great relevance in Ireland ….. but it has been hugely relevant in Scotland.

    Sadly.

How ,though , does that impact on Celtic in our home country? How does the average Scotsman view Celtic. Can`t speak for them , but I would imagine they are unlikely to put their support behind a team whose supporters travel the countryside loudly demonstrating their allegiance to a foreign country.

How would your guys feel about the Irish equivalent of same…….

( The sash , Fenian blood,Red hand of Ulster ………….all gathered together for a sporting occasion in Cork..

Picture the scene. Donnybrook ? )

Irish association with Celtic. Yes please.

To the exclusion of a Scottish association with Celtic. No thank you.

The Green Brigade and the banner. Bad P.R. for Celtic ( particularly in Scotland…..the home of Celtic !!!!!! ) and an expensive exercise Celtic. How many can you feed with 43,000 pounds?

What did it achieve ? Did you see Lenny`s reaction?

How`s about a banner lauding the Paras at an Irish sporting occasion ?

    How would you feel ?

    ==================================================================

  27. This is where it gets interesting…

Lawwell and the board will move the spin machine, our host included, into top gear.

The season ticket renewals are due and they know that they have lost the majority of fans. What can they do to sell season books?

Unfortunately, they should have been thinking that two years ago before they appointed someone who wasn’t up to the job.

We will now hear stories/rumours of fantastic new signings, great new moves, wonderful new manager but, in reality we’ll get Carlton Cole, CKR and Cifti type rank diddies and another puppet Lawwell can control.

They’ll rely on the base 40,000 to stay loyal and renew.

BUT, they have a problem. As I say, they have lost the majority of the fans so how do they sell the new tickets at a increased price because the new huns are there (Lawwell’s dream)?

I am totally sick of Lawwell and his stupid appointments and rank signings.

Typical management. Make outrageously stupid appointments then try to cover over the cracks and end up making a complete hash of it.

Deila clearly wasn’t the right man as far back as Murrayfield, but that was too soon to be sure. Maribor then Malmo & Molde confirmed it. But we have got to here because Lawwell had to be seen as some sort of visionary in appointing a young, European, innovative ‘manager’.

In reality what we got was an over-promoted chancer who is clueless about tactics and, despite his arrogant boasts, fitness. That team were dead on Sunday. Look at Bitton (remarkable recovery from a hamstring injury aside), Johansen, GMS. FFS! Fit my erchie.

Sick of the lot of them.

Actually, how many are confident that we’ll limp over the line?

In my work I haven’t spoken to one Tim, and I mean all Season Ticket holders, who is confident that we’ll make it.

    That’s how bad it is.

Can you imagine what it would be like if we didn’t win the league?

We have wasted our financial and organisational superiority and squandered millions that should have been invested in paying a proper manager who could bring in decent players to ensure that we were moving forward instead of speeding, in reverse, to the disaster we are witnessing.

I would hope that Desmond still has enough interest in the club to make wholesale changes from the top down.

Lawwell, the management and coaching team and the scouting system (FFS Cifti, Cole, CKR) all need completely revamped.

If we stay like this we can say goodbye to European football for years.

    Rant over.

    Have a good day.

    HH.

  28. Good morning friends. If our Club was represented by this morning’s EK weather we’d have absolutely nothing to worry about. A giorgeous clear skied, bright and sunny, bird-song filled start to the day here.

  29. Was hearing from my source who told me, several months ago that, the Celtic hierarchy were casting admiring glances towards – Wigan boss, Gary Caldwell – that, Ronny is toast and the hierarchy want Caldwell as our next manager but, have to wait till Wigan’s season is finished.

I heard the above last night.

Make of it what you will.

I would guess that WGS has suggested GC to the Celtic hierarchy.

Strachan was a puppet manager who began the emptying of the stadium.

I assume that, GC would be a puppet as well ?

I know that he was pompous pwick as a player.

    Rudderless Ship FC.

The only way that this will change is by ‘your’ next move.

Will you vote for more of the same ?

IE: Renew yer season book ?

If you do, remember that ‘you’ were responsible for the demise of Celtic FC.

You would be financially contributing to the group of ransackers who have reduced the club from being, a 60,000 sell-out with a waiting list of, 12,000 every second week, to a soulless, rudderless, wreck heading over the cliff with a stadium that would be struggling to reach crowds of 20,000.

Again, the contents of this post are not engineered by a knee-jerk reaction to Sundays loss in the SCSF.

In fact, Warburton had the huns playing the type of football that I want to see Celtic playing.

    Passing – moving – possession-play.

Big McGhee or, Jim McIntyre Ar La would have us playing that way….imho.

They won’t get the job coz they’ve got cojones or, they’re c@nts.

The Celtic hierarchy, even if Ronny manages to blow the league(don’t rule that out!) will, try to brass it out and, play a game of brinksmanship with the support over season book renewals.

Please stand firm and don’t allow yerselves to be sapped by any spin-doctoring that they deploy.

4 years ago….Celtic should have rattled the cage about the huns being granted a licence to start again in div 3.

Never mind all of the stuff about it wizny Celtic’s call…well, it bliddy well should have been.

After all, it was Celtic FC’s customers who were the biggest victims of all the hun cheating.

Sunday was a wee shot across the bow’s that, we could be about to regret not acting 4 years ago.

When will this club ever learn ?

Well, they won’t ever learn until….they’re made to learn!

Only you can call that shot.

Do you have the cojones ?

Or, do you like being a vicTim ?

The game of bluff will begin soon.

Make sure they don’t call yours.

You’ll Never Walk Alone….in the Jungle.

  30. My friends in. Celtic,

What is Undisputedly true is that the demographic make up of the Celtic support has changed enormously over the last few decades.

We now have a large middle class, professional and well educated proportion making up our support.

Subsequently our political ideology has changed, and many of our supportersnow make up their own minds rather than listen to the views of parents, grandparents etc.

compare the educational status of the Current GB and the old jungle dwellers. This is by no means a criticism it is merely true.

    HH.

  31. Still gutted from not just Sunday but all season TBH

Are Celtic taking a vow of silence now or locked away in dark room trying to conjure up spin to feed us?

For me the only action I can take is to stay away on Sunday what will it achieve? Fek all but just sick of the way we are being run and sick of being taken for a mug

Even a statement to acknowledge Sunday for what it was, a total embarrassment and culmination of RD’s disastrous reign ably support by board!, would be a start but total silence it has been so far they can expect the same on Sunday

    There`s more. :-)

    You say :

“I myself hold very strong Political views and did for most of my life support the physical force movement in Ireland, your attitude is that these people are murdering bastards. You may well find my views reprehensible which is your right but you haven;t walked in my shoes or more importantly in the shoes of men like Macanbheatha & Big Bones to name just two but yet you feel it’s OK to refer to them as murdering bastards.”

    ========================================================

That`s not true. I seem to remember using that phrase and you`re right. I shouldn`t have. Because it`s inflammatory.

I used it , however , about the perpetrators of this crime not about the individuals you mention.

As a Catholic , I was taught that the end never justifies the means.

After this crime , my hitherto sympathy for ” the cause ” evaporated.

    I suspect I`m not alone.

I`m sorry , but my opinion is that the 30 year I.R.A. campaign effectively destroyed any hope of the reunification of Ireland , a cause I am sure we both hold dear.

In the `60s Ireland still ” claimed ” the “six counties. ” After the campaign was over ,she did no longer.

    What was achieved ?

A legacy of suspicion and hatred.

    ==================================================================

“British Army & Security Forces the good guys but others might see it the other way round. Our views are shaped by our life experiences and its as simple as that.”

Some of the squaddies drafted in with expectations of trips to the South Seas may well have been good guys , but the perpetrators of Bloody Sunday `72 and further crimes against Republican Irishmen were murderous ……….Well , you know the rest.

    I`m Scottish. I`m British. And I`m a Tim.

I like to think that I don`t indulge in double standards.

I sincerely hope my views were not too confronting.

Surely time to move on and just enjoy being Tims.

Without forgetting the past or respecting those who lost their lives in a cause they believed deeply in.

We have a lot to look forward to as Celtic supporters. .

Assuming we have a change of coach.
