Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

  1. There total silence from Celtic, when everyone and their granny (including Owen Coyle’s) is speculating about our manager and his future, is a perfect example of what a poorly, poorly run club we are.

What, exactly, is the job of Celtic’s PR? To put out the tea and biscuits for the press conferences?

What about a simple holding statement:

“Everyone is hugely disappointed at the result at Hamden. But the players and manager are determined to win the league for the fans as soon as possible. We urge everyone to get behind Ronny and the Bhoys. In due course, the club will make a full statement about next season and the way forward.”

    OR

“Everyone is hugely disappointed at the result at Hampden, none more so than Ronny. The club and Ronny have agreed the best way forward is for a mutual parting of ways at the end of this season. Ronny will leave with the club’s heartfelt thanks for his sterling efforts. Now, however, there is a league to be won, and Ronny and the players are utterly focused on securing five in a row. Celtic urges every fan to get behind the team.

There will be an update on the way forward for next season in due course.” (Then, rallying statement from Ronny…)

Almost certainly one of these scenarios represents the truth. Why not communicate with the fans?

  2. Right, off to darkest Lanacashire from. Glorious Lanarkshire. Stopping with a mate of mine, I do have one or two, at my favourite Lanacashire hostelry where we will multi task on football.

There may be a cider or two drunk as well.

Forget about Sunday, the next game has just become a whole lot more difficult. I believe if we had packed Ronnie and JC off on Monday then the players would have got the message. Danny Mc Grain, Davie Hay either of them with John Kennedy would have seen us over the line. I do think we have an offer already on the table with an experienced manager and the courtesies are being done on that deal.

    As I have often said, I am a dreamer….

  3. Kev

Trying to force a paradigm shift upon myself with regard to Sunday. Took 2 days of utter despondency and then I started to see the positives.

    New manager

    They’re still crap

Yep. I was getting myself back up and into the world of positivity.

    Then…………..

…………….you enter the building, which is always a pleasure, but with two little words send me back into a state of dismay.

    Gary Caldwell.

Please say it won’t be so………………

  4. Italiabhoy

That would be too sensible and professional.

You’re correct, and the transparency would indeed see the fans quickly regroup and get the bhoys pushed over the line. I also think RD would get tremendous backing from the support in the final few games.

  5. Good natured celebrations. Aye…..he forgot to add ” with which we joined in”

I’m not long after reading a man is in hospital in critical condition after being stabbed several times. He was wearing a Celtic top. Obviously that’s coincidental. ‘Despite the singing of the Billy boys’. Despite? Wtf

Police Scotland have praised the behaviour of supporters at Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden despite the singing of The Billy Boys and other anti-catholic hate songs.

Eighteen arrests were made in and around Hampden but ‘additional arrests could be made’ for offensive singing according to chief superintendent Brian McInulty.

Despite having over 30,000 supporters, the majority of them known season ticket holders, singing The Billy Boys at Ibrox against Hibs in December no arrests have been made.

Speaking to STV McInulty said: “Overall, both Scottish Cup semi-finals went well over the weekend, with a thrilling atmosphere at the national stadium, Hampden, and good-natured celebrations following the matches.

Don’t think I have been so disappointed or frustrated watching the Cellik as I was on Sunday as it nearly moved me completely out of the Happy Clappers Band which I have been in all my supporting years, which are many. To see Celtic set up from the start to ‘contain’ the team masquerading as Rangers was diabolical. Even in our worst periods we never set out with an inferior complex. All letting them have the possession as long as it was not in the last third did was give ‘them’ confidence. We might have been shite against them often in the past against them but I don’t remember us being feart! However, that game is gone now but never to be forgotten. There are 5 games to go and we must get behind the Cellik and get them over the line because this lot won’t be able to do it on their own.The time for boycotts, non support and boos is NOT now. I will be at all home games as always and if I got a ticket at the away games too . Let’s get the job done and then moan.BTW, never booed Celtic in my life and never will. My Dad would kill me and he’s been dead for 57 years :) :).

I’ve said to my friends that my fear and what I’d expected was to win the double and be told it is a successful season. This wouldn’t have changed Newco’s progress in the same way that beating us on penalties will not have done either, there’s still a substantial gap. What I do think it’s achieved is to end RD’s time in charge and put real pressure on the board to appoint someone who the fans will be happy with. Hopefully I will be looking back at that game in a similar way as I do with ICT’s win at Parkhead knowing that it was the moment we brought in a dominant manager.

  8. Cosy CB

Booing. Oddly, the first time I remember hearing booing of a player, was when standing in the jungle and the teams were announced over the speaker.

As they got to “David Moyes’ the boos echoed around the jungle.

I had just started going to the games on my own, and remember it vividly, but unsure in retrospect whether it was because he’d been poor, or, because he’d said he was a Rangers fan.

Assuming the former, since we had a few of them over the years.

Ironic now that he is the very man I’m hoping is appointed boss, though I appreciate he’s not the chosen one for a lot of others.

Morning Bhoys does anyone have any information that we are after Gary Caldwell as our next manager talks with Wigan are ongoing.? H.H.

  10. Great pity that our super duper CEO could not silence our players and coaches like he does everybody else. We have now had 2 seasons of utter garbage coming out of Lennoxtown.

The players need to take on the lack of fitness by themselves, get fit ffs.

Win the league then let the clear out begin starting with the CEO then Park.

Maybe we should chuck football and take up hide and seek. With “Pimpernel” Peter Lawwell at the helm we’d be unbeatable.

Gary Caldwell as manager would just about be it for me. Look forward to 15k crowds and 4th place in the league next season.

  15. Result : yellow card.

    Charge: called someone a liar

    Defence: naw a didnae

Action: E mailed the main man, pasted and copy of the clown calling me a liar. And asked for a level playing field.

If yellow not rescinded : Will ask for a meeting at CQN towers with the main man, and will be accompanied by my team of CT representatives :Jeanette Findley and Jnr. Minister : Hamiltontim, three double double decker buses from the Brazen Head (sponsored by the religious group of Buckfast Monks) times and details of these dates will be posted on follow follow web site.

  16. Caldwell imo is no better or worse than most of the names being banded about.

I can’t see them deviating from the policy they have embarked on, buy cheap etc, and bringing weans through, tho that isny happening, and the scattergun approach needs to change cos it’s feckin disaster.

So if the same policy is being adhered to they need to think outside the box again and appoint a coach who is used to having players given to them.

    Paco or Toral for me.

How do you know he wouldn’t be a success? He’s doing not too bad in his first managerial appointment. Don’t think he’s ready yet for a club of our size with the expectations that come with it, another couple of successful seasons down south and he will be, but by then bigger clubs down south will be offering him riches well beyond what we could offer.

Got a feeling that this time DD will be hands on in the appointment and that means experienced, old school British type manager.

  18. Over the last couple odd days ,I have referred back to previous posts made by myself .

I find myself doing it again.

Dermot Desmond ,I implore you to get involved.

You need to take a hands on approach.

When you leave it to Peter Lawell and his lickspittle board, they more often than not ,feck it up.

I don’t want us trying to unearth another unknown rough diamond of a manager.

Who we hope to polish and watch shine in future years.

Get someone who is proven ,experienced and can do the job straight away.

Changes in structure ,etc, etc is all bullshit.

Get someone who can do the job properly ,give him the funds to do it, and the autonomy to do it.

The appointment of our next manager is the most Important appointment since MON replaced Dalglish and Barnes.

We have a generation of being dominated riding on this appointment.

Don’t fall for this clever strategic pish of a weak manager with an older head above him, providing him with wise counsel

If he requires a permanent older head around him to provide wise counsel ,then he ain’t the man for the job.

We can gamble no more with Peter Lawell and his theoretical ,hypothetical, pseudo knowledgeable managers and structures.

Just get the right man for the job, give him the funds to do the job,and the power to see it through.

  19. Macjay, Scrolling back through the moon howler shift, I saw a few replies from you to a post I made last night.

I except you are British and I’m Irish. You refer to an atrocity committed by Republicans. If you want to trade in atrocities, I can assure you that my side have suffered 800 years of atrocities, so don’t go there.

I do not have the time or inclination to get into a detailed debate about your points and neither do I want to bore the blog or deflect from the more important issue of the state of our team. My initial post was motivated by your post to Hamilton Tim & maybe I should just have left HT speak for himself or indeed if HT choose not to respond just have left it at that.

Slightly amused about your concern for Irish Unification. I disagree with your analysis there as well. The removal of the Article in the Irish Constitution means Hee Haw. Unification will come, of that I’m certain, not in my lifetime but it will come. The demographics of the North will see a Catholic majority but that in itself will not be the decisive factor but it will be a help. It does not make economic sense to have 2 Governments, 2 civil services and have every cost factor involved in running an economy duplicated on a small island.

The clowns that destroyed our economy were the guys who delayed Unification. We are recovering strongly but it will take decades, eventually we will get there, when it makes strong economic sense, unification will happen.

Anyway, for what it’s worth I think it is unfair to blame Ronnie Deila for the problems at Celtic.

In 120+ minutes on Sunday we managed to undo most of the damage inflicted on them over the past 4 years; the overcautious, complacent and unimaginative policy of the Cletic board has exploded spectacularly in their faces.

On Sunday afternoon I’ll be one of the ole Timbleweeds blowin’ around Celtic Park.
