Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

  1. Snake P, excellent post.

I agree with you about Sevco’s performance. It’s being talked up after the event. I thought they were tidy and quick, but fragile in defence and ultimately not hugely inventive. When we equalised first time they were rocking. Inexplicably, we reverted back to our defensive posture.

I also agree the next manager has to be a Winner. Not a project, not a clever bloke with nice ideas, not a visionary, not necessarily a young guy or an old guy… Just a winner, pure and simple.

You forgot one other outstanding Heid “FACT!”

As a scorer in European football,he is the only man to have scored against us-aye,that’s right, scored against US-for three different clubs.

That’s no reason not to have him as a manager. But we need experience of man-management and football management. A fella who has been about a bit,as suggested by STARRY PLOUGH.

A MAN WHO DOESNT SAY-“Er,okay then…” when challenged by his players, but -“Izzatso? Get yerself tae f… until you learn to listen!!!!!”

I called out a liar for being a liar. Anyone who has read Tony with regards resurion 12 and his blatant lie (2 part lie) knows that to be fact.

I also thought on several occasions when our midfield was breaking on to their defence that poor decision making and thw wrong pass let them get back and defend. One or two better passes and the Celtic players were in on goal more than once.

A confident Celtic team who were together as a unit would have done better in those situations.

I really feel this is a watershed moment for the board. Then need to very carefully consider who they appoint as the next manager and what players are brought in over the summer. Cheap and unproven options will not cut it. They are no longer in a position to gamble.

  12. We just have to look at the England rugby team . They replaced their coach, a nice guy , taught school rugby a thinker of the game , unfortunately for him hard bitten professionals didn’t buy into it .

He is replaced by Eddie Jones , an unlikeable sort of character , a winner and someone who gets the maximum out of players.

The result , the same players who failed at the World Cup win the grand slam.

Good read, if newspapers had that sort of analysis or comment I’d buy one.

I would add that it’s becoming open season on Celtic just now, there are obvious cracks and there’s plenty of people trying to jemmy them open with their crowbars.

For me it is important our older players remain focused and vocal this weekend on the park, organised and driven. When the management team is holed below the waterline it offers an easy pass for the players, this is our single biggest challenge in securing the title. There needs to be an affirmative position taken by the Club before the weekend and we move into the post split fixtures together. Nothing would please the fans and wind up the horribles more than to have Ronny Roar at Celtic Park against Aberdeen to secure the title and to take a lap of honour against Motherwell with a send off and thanks the Celtic way.

It requires a win against Ross County which is never easy, all side issues should be addressed before then and we can set ourselves up for a title celebration rather than either complete catastrophe or meekly wandering off with a trophy received in embarrassment, which are the two options being salivated over.

  25. Ah mean, who is daft enough to think that the present hierarchy should be allowed the opportunity to blow it again ?

    When will yeez learn ?

All that you are displaying is, how easy it is to play you.

The hierarchy are – slippery, sleekit sharks!

When the fluk will yeez get that ?

That is how ‘high’ they regard the Celtic supporters – gie them Gary Caldwell!!!

    FFS!!!!

I’ve been tipped off about this, that’s why I put it on here, not to score points but…to warn innocent, well meaning Celtic supporters that, the hierarchy were lining you up….again!

I put it on here a few months ago when I first found out and, was kicked up and down a few pages of the blog, that’s all btw but, the important thing is….the intention to give you the nod was thee only reason for me posting about Gary Caldwell in the first place.

I think that both, he and Stephen McManus were like WGS’s pet poodles.

Ye see, WGS operates on cliquey lines….that’s why Aiden was the black sheep imho.

    WGS was a puppet manager.

Caldwell was a puppet on the pitch…undroppable.

    Aye,…..ma erchie.

Caldwell and, McManus were bullied by Cousan of the huns while, Bobo sat in the stand as, Lawwell tried to freeze him out.

    That worked out well….eh.

Anyway,….it is said that the hierarchy read these pages.

So, I thought that the best thing to do would be to let the genie out of the bottle and, let the hierarchy read the comments relating to they’re latest tunnel digging.

Fact is….the hierarchy should be shown the door….by you!

    They’ve fluked it up with…

    WGS – Puppet

    BTM – Puppet

NFL – Chucked it because of puppet strings!

    Ronny – Puppet

Only a fool would place any trust in these guisers to get it right this time!

Btw….Cifti & CKR would be like, Gerd Muller and, Marco Van Basten….

    under Big McGhee’s watch….imho.

Don’t think about Europe just now….it’s more important that we’re a guid team in our own midden first.

    We’re not at the minute….imho.

The billionaires and, millionaires on the hierarchy don’t deserve to be trusted ‘again’ with Celtic’s stewardship….imho.

But, having said all of that…it’s not my call because, I stopped being made a fool of by the billionaires when MO’N walked and they said that they would be downsizing the quality of the product on the pitch, and in the dug-out.

If the hierarchy think that they can fool you….that’s what they’ll do.

From a personal p.o.v. I miss going to see the Cellic but, I was not going to be a mug for the cause and, denying my family with much needed income so that some deceitful liar could afford a heated driveway.

I still feel that it’s possible for Ronny to blow this league.

If he dizny….the hierarchy might brazenly try to paper over the cracks by, brassing it out to see how many season books that they sell.

It’s a shambles, created by the hierarchy and, the great pity is that it’ll only be the innocent fans who’ll feel any fall-out if….Ronny blows it.

    So, so sad.

Snake P — that was an excellent post.

The key thing to take away from Sunday was that The Rangers are no world beaters and any examination of the stats (not that stats tell you everything) reveals that Celtic could easily have won the game had they taken their chances.

Celtic did not line up the right way and the players were either tactically set up wrong or mentally sent out in the wrong frame of mind. Player by player they should have wiped the floor with the blue team. They failed as a collective — from manager through to substitutes.

With regard to the PLC, there is no doubting that the CEO is a Celtic fan. Nor is there any doubting that many within the club are Celtic fans who only want the best for the club.

However, in leading a PLC or any business of size being a fan is not enough. You have to bring a method to the management. You have to assess the risks involved in each decision and create a structure where (as BMCUP pointed out) there is continual improvement planning, succession planning and most importantly a structure which allows you take make the most of any business opportunity.

There is a well known poster on here who works for a remarkable organisation. They are a charity, and they focus on their chosen specialist area and reinvest a huge percentage of the money they collect back into the charity for the purposes of research and so on.

The guys at the top could all be described as “fans” of the charity.

However, to achieve their goal they are ruthless in their professionalism. They employ the best smart cookies from commerce to deal with things like retail strategy and management, marketing, PR and so on and they pay them handsomely all of which is openly shown in their accounts.

These guys are given the remit to perform, generate the income, be prodfessional, have departmental strategies and feed all that info back up the chain. They also pass the money generated back up the chain and then the “fans on the board” decide how to use it and invest it.

Celtic PLC have a customer base which is not dissimilar to that of a union membership or a club. They get out of bed each day wanting to support the club. They want to see the club and the people within the club succeed. They lap up good news stories which show player development, charitable initiatives, show a bit of humour and humanity, relate the club to each and every one of us and show that the club is representative of “us”.

Fergus was hugely appreciated most of the time because he was clearly a fan of the club and a fan of the fanbase whilst at the same time being as tough as old boots in terms of business strategy. Not everyone agreed with all that he did and on occasion he received his fair share of boos. But he advanced the club no end.

Who would have thought that one of the most respected Celts of all time would be the deputy Governor of the Bank of England? Quinn was the consumate professional. Not afraid of hard decisions, professional at every turn, working away quietly in the background but still able to relate to the fan base with no suggestion of him being aloof or detahced.

The current board do not manage to convey that image or that vibe.

That doesn’t meant they are bad people or don’t have Celtic at heart, it just means that they are set up wrongly and sent out into each day wrongly.

Tiny Tim makes a good point — Dermot should play a far more hands on role. Here is a buy who is astonishgly successful and who can access resources and people many other business people just can’t get to.

I once herad a Glasgow lawyer complain ” That guy over there is an expert only because he has the telephone number of Mr X and Mr Y — who are real experts in the field. When he wants to know something he calls them up and asks them and then passes the info on — but he himself is no expert.”

My boss at the time laughed at this and went on to point out to this young whippersnapper that one of the greatest assets you can have in business is an address book and a set of phone numbers for people who you like, trust and who are experts you can call on at the drop of a hat.

The guy concerned wasn’t an expert in this or that, but he was an expert “manager” who knew who to go to in any situation and when to go to them.

In my opinion, the PLC needs an overhawl, it needs a different approach in a number of areas and it needs fresh executives who will challenge current thinking and bring innovation and motivation.

That does not mean there should be no place for Peter Lawwell by the way as his experience of being in the chair is of undoubted value and should be available to call upon.

Celtic PLC are in a strong position but it should be stronger — or if it is in a stronger position than I think it is then that should be better communicated to the fanbase and shareholders.

Every business should be reviewed from top to bottom on a regular basis. We are at a time of change and it is essential that the company makes progressive changes from top to bottom and through root and branch.

Changing the manager, a couple of coaches and some players does not represent making the most your potential in my opinion though it will undoubtedly be a start but you have to get it right this time and there can be no room for failure.
