Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

Ronny is not getting sacked for one result, he has been forgiven many but we cannot be blind for ever, a serious of failures has only one outcome

Thank you for the compliment. Usually I get told that I am talking p**h lol.

I accept that there have been a number of times that the tactics have not worked but our players should be capable of doing basic things like closing down opponents.

Human nature likes simple solutions to problems. It tends to blame a victim for failures. All that I am trying to say is that our present predicament is, IMHO, not the fault of one person and that simply replacing the manager is not the answer. HH

Generally speaking I think the players we have are good enough we just need a manager with tactical nous and the ability to get the best from his players. Perhaps one or two shrewd additions.

*I was one of the more optimistic supporters that welcomed Ronny and the 5 year plan that seemed to be put in place changing from moneyball to rearing our own similar to the Kelly Kids in the mid 50’s.

So I’m a disappointed that it didnae pan out. I’m still hopeful that the concept will still be in place else we ditch the development side of the club and just buy other teams players.

The KK experiment looked to be on track with some great performances including drubbings of the young huns until Jock left.

Disappointment set in with young players failing tae develop further and others like wee Bertie, Eric Smith and Paddy Crerand being forced to leave due to mismanagement and board interference.

On Jock’s return, fortunately for us, some of his youngsters were still there although just prior to this big Billy was eyeing White Hart Lane and Bobby Murdoch Oz, the rest is history.

It should be noted though that in the summer of ’65 he allegedly gave Bob Kelly a list of players that were deemed surplus to requirements one of which was a wee curret heided winger with a suspect temperament.

Now I’m not advocating bringing Ronny back in 5 years but I would hesitate to dump players that have not fulfilled their promises….yet.

Good insightful analysis. As you mention Bankier is a sign of the times. Who put him in place—- doubt he moves in Dublin 4 circles so it must have been PL.

RD is another appointment that is out of his depth. PL decision.

The Managment team below PL is invisible with Public Relations viewed as a form of leprosy. As such everything flows upwards and PL just loves it. It’s a control freaks dream.

As the team has been downsized the management has been dumbed down to. As per the analogy of South Africa detailed last night he has made himself like Zuma…indispensable. There has been no talent management and no threats to his leadership and control of the club.

He is a clever man and this manoeuvring is by design not by accident.

One element I miss from your post is the missed opportunity of the last 4 years and the ongoing downsizing of expectations and club in general ( with one notable exception).

  30. Macjay, The Politics thing works both ways. There is no doubt that a large section of the Celtic Support feel a strong allegiance to those who fought for Irish Freedom. I would also say that the vast majority of Irish Celtic Supporters I know would be more Republican orientated then those who follow EPL for example. Apart from the Irish Politics I would say that these same people tend to be more left wing in their General Political beliefs as well.

There are very natural historical reasons why this situation exists, I’ll spare you the analysis but you know Irish & Celtic History as well as I do.

If the Green Brigade do make a Statement with a Banner it is construed by you of imposing their view on other Celtic Supporters, if they are prevented from making a Statement it is construed by them as having someone else’s opinion imposed on them.

I myself hold very strong Political views and did for most of my life support the physical force movement in Ireland, your attitude is that these people are murdering bastards. You may well find my views reprehensible which is your right but you haven;t walked in my shoes or more importantly in the shoes of men like Macanbheatha & Big Bones to name just two but yet you feel it’s OK to refer to them as murdering bastards.

I have never sang a Political song at a Celtic Game, I have never tried to use my Celtic connections to promote my views, if there is a debate on here I’ll give my view the very same as you do. There is absolutely nothing different in what HT or I do or say compared to what you do or say. You have a view which you are entitled to, we may have an alternative view at times but that is OK too.

Neither of us can claim the soul of Celtic,, It’s a broad Church and so it should be. To you the IRA may have been murderers and the British Army & Security Forces the good guys but others might see it the other way round. Our views are shaped by our life experiences and its as simple as that.

For the record I now consider that the war is over and I am a very strong supporter & advocate of the Peace Process, however that does not mean that I and I suspect HT are prepared to turn our back on our History.

Post very long winded I know but trying to make the point that imposition of views is a 2 sided coin,

Serious point. I dread to think what the crowd reaction will be if Ross County score first on Saturday. This radio silence from the club potentially adding to a tinderbox atmosphere. It won’t be dead man walking Ronny that’s the target if it goes Pete Tong on Saturday. Probably a combo of Pedro and the unpopular players. Wee timid GMS for example, who Ronny will probably play at centre half as part of his tactical masterplan.
