Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

  1. Unfortunatley I think we are not fit, whether it is the amount of games played, the regime at training reliance on sports science rather than your own eyes I dont know but we dont appear to be able to sustain pressure for any length of time.

  2. Well the pain doesn’t subside at all.

    I’m one mixed up kid.

    Celtic infuriate me……

    Everything done on the cheap.

Tickets and merchandising and catering cost top dollar.

Our Board have remained silent on us being cheated for years.

They are resistant ( IMO) to res.12

    Scattergun signing approach .

    Over paid , underperforming players.

    And on and on…….

I feel sorry for Ronny.I’m a recent convert to the Ronny must go brigade.

The Ross Cty Semi the last straw for me.

However, I would never do anything to hurt my club.

How can withdrawing season ticket money benefit us?

IMO , Deila and Lawwell must go the minute the season is over, swiftly followed by Collins, Kennedy and Park.

Lawwell has failed. Presided over plummeting attendances and a bloated Mediocre squad.

He has feathered his SFA nest IMO to the detriment of our club whilst bemoaning the £10m lost a season due to the absence of Sevco.

You know what Pete, if u handed invested in dross, compounding the error by investing in more dross instead of a bit of quality we could be Champions League regulars earning £15m per season.

Now that appears a pipe dream.

Worse than that is the reluctance to fight for justice, if not for the club , for us , the support who collectively spent millions on a rigged league for years.

Who to next….. Maybe I’ve rose tinted glasses. For me it has to be the blessed Martin. For my generation , the most fantastic of times was when he was boss.

Yogi? Hartley ? McGhee? Come on , give us a break.

Time for new men, a new broom , a man of authority, who commands respect and does it his way.

    Anyway , rant over.

    C’mon the hoops

  3. Sunday’s result is not the only reason for changing the Celtic manager. Most people on here will know I do not make many games these days but I have managed along to paradise a dozen times this season. I enjoyed the Aberdeen match around October. Thought we played some good stuff and in all honesty felt we were on the right track. The January window bar big Erik was another poor window. We emptied big Ciftci and brought in another striker who in all honesty is a similar if not poorer replacement. CKR hasn’t shown much so far and we were a Griffiths injury away from having no goalscorer. Initially I felt we were finally going to play with 2 strikers. Griffiths looks burnt out. The Bhoy has got himself fit and in great form and then he has been run into the ground persistently playing up front on his own chasing down lost causes and high balls. Twice Dundee were able to shut us out. Easily. Against Hearts we had a touch of magic from Roberts and a performance where we dug in and managed to come back from a goal down to win fairly handsomely but I was watching good football on show from the Jambos but not really much from the Hoops. That was concerning. Hearts have a rookie manager who appears to be knitting together a very able side in a short period of time. They lost their best striker in January and if they hadn’t I think they would have run the sheep much closer for 2nd place as they had a bad period trying to reshuffle after Sow left. Celtic have had injuries but we have much better and more resources than everyone else in the league.

The manager came in and gave us a clear mandate of what he would deliver and most of us bought into that and accepted that this was the way forward. Forget the bad results they can happen but the team have clearly now downed tools for him. They are not even fighting for the fans. That to me indicates he must be removed as soon as possible. Celtic face 3 games in the next few weeks from Ross County at home to a game at Tynecastke arguably the toughest away venue in the league and then a match at home against our nearest challengers. All 3 of these teams have caused us problems this season. Any one of these sides could take points from us and the pressure on Ronny would be higher than ever. Pressure games so far under Ronny’s guidance have come in the shape of semi finals and finals along with European matches. Not many have went well. Since January the team have looked jaded, especially late in matches and also looked bereft of confidence when the pressure has been on. Sunday was the epitome of a pressure game and the players didn’t come up short they completely failed. It wasn’t even close. They started slowly, the first goal was gifted, after dragging ourselves into the game we then didn’t take it to Sevco, we lost a wonder goal, eventually in extra time we found enough battling spirit to get an equaliser and God willing we would have got a winner bar a shade of huge luck against us, any other day the ball hits the bar hits the goalie and goes in or doesn’t hit him and Rogic becomes a hero by tapping in the winner. It didn’t happen and by the time it went to penalties we were beaten. The pressure was huge. Sevco had already gained a morale victory and when having their pep talk before the spot kicks Warburton had it easy. They weren’t disgraced, matched us and played well. Nothing to lose. Ronny must and surely have said to our players we MUST win this! An absolutely unforgivable state of affairs and this match didn’t creep up on us. We had 6 weeks to prepare for this match and be ready. We looked like we had been informed of this match and the opponents a few hours before kick off. The manager had us ill prepared. Every match can’t be approached the same. That is another failing by Ronny.

It feels me with no joy to see Ronny fail. I wanted him to win lots of trophies but it hasn’t happened. He has had a bigger advantage over his rivals than any other manager in Celtic history and has delivered 3 trophies. It’s not good enough I’m afraid. Previous managers dropped a lot of first team players and we went out of cups against lower league opposition on occasions most notably against a very poor Morton team but this game was an opportunity to slap down an up and coming big mouth in Scottish football. We blew it. Former Celtic managers would have given their right arm to have the advantage that Ronny has enjoyed the last 2 seasons in domestic football and 2 cracks at Sevco where some long lasting damage could be done. Ronny let them off the hook last season and this season completely blew it. It’s unforgivable. I would be asking him to wrap it up this week and ask Tommy McIntyre, Davie Hay or someone else at the club to see us over the line. There is no shame or disgrace in that. How good a reception is Ronny going to get lifting a league title that was won before a ball was kicked? The league should have been secured and out of sight before the split. I still believe that a new pair of eyes, using a different formation and personnel currently not getting a look in at the minute in the starting 11 would turn the screw in the remaining games. If we continue to play the same way with the same players don’t be surprised if the performances remain the same. The silence from the club is deafening, tell the fans what is going on and at least release a statement of apology for what was a capitulation at the weekend against a side that should have been put to the sword in the first 45 mins and chasing shadows the rest of the game. It’s often said that in hard times some players need an arm around them while others need a boot up the @rse: the whole team need a boot up the @rse at the minute and I’m not sure Ronny has that in him. Hopefully we get the title done ASAP because dropping points and going into the Aberdeen match as a must win cup final scenario doesn’t bear thinking about!

  4. Well, I’m going down with the sinking ship.

I like Ronny. And in time I think he would have become a very good manager for us. But for one thing. He and / or his team have no luck.

Roberts miss, inexplicable. Griff hits post, twice. Keeper makes very good saves.

And then penalties. Question. We’re any of the Rangers penalty takers left footed.

    Our lefties all had problems.

Griff, yes it went in. But until the net bulged I was sure it was going over. Seemed to go a lot higher than he possibly intended.

McGregor, hit the crossbar. Higher than he intended for sure.

Rogic. The ball popped up before he struck it. Did the same happen to the others?

Not sure about Pisa restaurants… General rule of thumb in Italy is that you can hardly go wrong, unless who stray into an obvious tourist trap.

Best restaurants in my experience are the plainest, family-run places. Steer clear of anything too posh-looking. The food will be good, but expensive, and worse value than your street-side trattoria.

Pisa and that part of Tuscany is famous for truffles – any pasta with this in it will be beautiful! (though am not sure it’s the season… maybe too early?)

Can you blame the coach for a flawed and inflexible ‘system’ of play?

Can you blame the coach for the putrid dross we’ve been watching for the best part of two years? (remember, the only reasonable spell of play was January to the league was won last year)

Can you blame the coach for being unable to motivate a squad of players paid more than any other team in Scotland or Norway or Sweden?

Can you blame the coach for a team that are patently unfit and complete pussies on the park?

Can you blame the coach for talking absolute utter bollocks for two years?

I am in a world of pain that can only be played out on here because it’s just easier than speaking to anyone about it. I have felt down about Celtic results in my life but this is a body blow that only possibly the Raith Rovers cup final comes close to.

I have always backed out gaffers to the hilt but personally I have been too faithful to them in the past. Experience tells me that it’s best to get rid as soon as they have hit rock bottom. If Ronny slips any lower than that result on Sunday it’s a complete disaster. Personally I would put him out of his misery. If the media or anyone else says it is unfair or out of order I couldn’t give a monkeys. Lots of people have been telling me for 2 seasons he is out of his depth. I don’t think he was but I think it is wise for all concerned to cut ties now. We could have kept Mogga on and we didn’t because a result against St Mirren was so unacceptable that he had to go. Regardless of being top of the league and champions elect or not Sunday was a similar result to Moggas against st Mirren for me and Ronny should go. It’s been wrong for ages and I think our development coach would be able to see th season out. It’s my opinion and I know a lot of people won’t agree but I have been devastated for the last 72 hours because Ronny had a shout of keeping his job for next season by blowing Sevco out the water winning the cup and romping home in the league and failed spectacularly. If you can’t motivate the team to save your own skin then I really despair at why you would persevere any further.

The only bonus of the tribute act was a level playing field minus EBT’s and the opportunity to absolutely slaughter them when we had the misfortune to face them on the pitch again. 2nd opportunity at it and we not only don’t give them a doing we allow them to dominate and even knock us out the cup. I don’t understand anyone wanting Ronny to limp on.

Sí, try learning the third person singular (he/she) part of the verb, which ends in -a or -e, then add an ‘s’ if you want to say ‘you’ (handy for questions), add an -n if you want to say ”they’.

Ejemplos: mi amigo habla inglés. Y tú? Hablas inglés? Mis padres hablan inglés.

My friend speaks English. What about you? Do you speak English? My parents speak English.

    Great & thoroughly honest post.

Just one question though. You stated the manager was ill prepaired after having 6 weeks to prepare for this game having early suggested the players have downed tools and are not working for their manager.

I think both your points are true as personally I don’t believe Ronny, sadly, has the managerial authority were players put his plan into action thoroughly. That is a failing on Ronny’s part. However, every player who has downed tools and is not willing to put the managers instructions into their game and give 100% for the fans who pay hard earned cash to attend should be identified by the club and in my view be sold, free transfered etc. no matter how senior they are or how egotistical they are. They should be in the next taxi after Ronny who should be in the taxi after Peter the Bonus collector.
