Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

Am I reading the above correctly? Sorry Paul, but you’ve done everything BUT talk about the changes needed. At every point the discussion has been obfuscated and diverted. By you.

Expressly, you have repeatedly mentioned ‘now is not the time for a debate’, and referred to the weasel words ‘Circle the wagons’. So, let’s be clear here. You have not brought anything to the table regarding discussions about what’s needed!

We routinely and vociferously attack the mainstream media for dishonesty, and frankly, I hold you to a higher standard. Sadly, even the above article is a distraction from speaking about matters beyond the manager.

You’ve also been 100% wrong thus far with the ‘keep the manager as best hope of success’. I mentioned at the time it was speculative nonsense despite your repeated inclination to state it as fact, so let’s not try and change history. It was a bad call then, it’s a bad call now.

The squad appears in disarray. With a manager signally incapable of lifting the team. More to the point, the wins look like they’re available when the players decide to go of message. When the manager and our esteemed Adonis-esque post-bosman assistant manager have their way we fail.

If you can’t find it in yourself to actually take a stand for Celtic over the personalities “running” Celtic, at least have the courage to admit your complicity in their planning. Your silence has been deafening.

    Very, very disappointed.

There has been a deep hatred and ongoing character assasination against Peter Lawwell and the Celtic board of Directors for at least the last six months on this forum.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion but some of the vitriol is getting ‘beyond the pale’.

Now there is an even more sinister development. There are some posters who have taken things much further and are abusing people on the blog who dare to offer a different view.

There is no attempt by these people to answer civily in response – all we get is innuendo, insults, abuse and their worst bile.

Surely that is not what Celtic Quick News is about.

There was also an incident where Jinky had done something to annoy Jock Stein and Jock chased him up the tunnel in such a rage that Jinky had to lock himself in the dressing room.

To bin a player such as Jinky for one such incident would have been overreaction.

The point is that Jock knew how to handle players in a way that Ronny (or to be fair , many another manager) wouldn’t.

  6. MWD

Agree to be honest. If there are players that have downed tools they should be emptied.

Is it as easy as that though? Not really. We have had a prime example of it via Derk the ghost Boerritger. Unfortunately an unmotivated trouble maker or non trier is not attractive to clubs who want to sign your players. Also players are paid sums of money that we would swim the Clyde for in December. It has to be managed properly. If you want rid of a player you have to still make that player look attractive to other clubs. Some players may be trying but are just struggling to play a certain way. In my opinion a good manager looks at who he has, what they can do and then has a discussion with his coaches to work out the best formation, tactics and style of play to get the best out of them. He would then go about either gradual change or gradual additions and removal of players from the squad that don’t fit the remit.

If a new coach takes the current team tweaks it a bit and changes formation and tactics and we paste Ross County and beat hearts and Aberdeen comfortably you have an answer to your question. The players had not been reacting well to the manager or what he was doing or they didn’t fit or were able to play as he wanted. There are small margins in football. Leicester were bottom of the table at Christmas 2014 and top at Christmas 2016. Why? The change was simple. New manager. Tweaks in the playing Staff, style of play and motivation. That is a small change for a huge improvement.

Ronny just didn’t work out. Happens to the best of them. Look at Jose at Chelsea. Hero to zero. Players just chucked it for him. They brought in Hiddink and certain players are still underperforming. They know have a dossier and an idea at who no longer wants to be there and who deserves to be there. If a player is a problem under more than one manager then they will probably always be a problem and you try and get rid.

Why did James Forrest not want to sign a new deal? He been tapped or has he decided that he doesn’t want to sign in again for Ronny? Lot of questions, lot of mysteries and only one solution for me. The game has changed and waiting to the summer smacks of a bygone age where you had 2 months off and players lay on beaches getting fat only to return and have the legs run off them for a few weeks. Celtic have their biggest game of the season in a matter of months. Get an interim in place and the new manager in the stand before the title is lifted at Paradise at the end of the season. Build the momentum now! Leicester have rode on a crest of momentum most of the season and they may yet not win the league but it’s amazing what momentum will do for a club. Our new manager must be someone who can unite the club and excite the fans but more importantly motivate and get the best from our players.

  9. LB,

Good , thoughtful post. RD needs to go now and delay shows the incompetence of Lawwell.

RD should never have been appointed as manager and there were multiple occasions he should have been sacked. A proper manager would have secured the treble this season.

However RD is a nice guy and clearly a proud man. He has been shafted by the biggest spiv ever to darken the doors of Celtic Park—-Peter Lawwell.

Lawwelll knows RD needs to be sacked now. However by hanging RD out to dry he opens him up to ridicule and the focal point for all the failures at the club. It nicely takes the heat away from him and when RD is replaced in the summer he can claim the moral high ground of change agent.

Lawwell is happy that the anger towards Ronny grows everyday and saves his rump. Lawwell picked Ronnys assistants and provided him Carlton Cole and CKR whilst selling anybody with value. Even Rainieri would fail with Lawwell digging tunnels under him.

Until Lawwell is chased down London Road Celtic will destroy itself from within.

The loathing of Lawwell is now in the DNA of the support. He is the man who has destroyed our club to his own personal advantage.

His final act should be pushing Ronny under the bus with that smug grin.

I think the attitude of players in the 60’s/70’s is much different to now, they are highly paid now and hold the power as clubs cannot just sideline players who dont tow the line however desirable that may be, I think in the 60’s 70’s 80’s many would have considered it an honour to play for Celtic , now I’m not so sure that is the case, the effects of too much money being widely available.

If there is any substance to the suggestions that players are not giving 100% for the manager or his assistant then they should be giving 110% for the Celtic jersey which they are privileged to wear. If not, any so inclined, should be first out of the door.

If the players lack basic skills e.g. ability to pass properly, move into space etc they should stay behind for extra practice until they master the basics.

I am sure that no manager instructs players to miss sitters, lose concentration but it is always the manager who pays the price. If the players cannot, or will not, work to improve their deficiencies then they are not worthy to wear a Celtic jersey. HH

Agreed. It is a challenge that requires some management in it’s own right.

However, in my view, any player downing tools and not giving 100% for those fans who pay to support them and the team weekly are committing a bigger crime than a manager employed to fit a budget, who lacked the experience required to manage a team of our stature. It is not Ronny’s fault he should not have been employed in the position he took up. It was a once in a lifetime chance for him which could have turned to gold like it did for another inexperience manager employed to do the job.

Those players if identified have to be shipped ASAP. The more senior they are then the quicker they should be shipped. The senior players are supposed to provide a guiding hand to our more junior players as well as a stand as a good example of professionalism to them.

Here’s a thing, I think Peter Lawell has done exceptionally well guiding our club – financially over the past 10 years or more, so credit where it is due

    But, there always is :-)

He really needs to be acting decisively on where our club is underperforming, and deal with root cause of such

Management team – not working, hasn’t been for approaching 12 months, I would say

Scouting Dept – as an accountant, Peter should no better than anyone the adjective failure from this dept for several seasons, look at our team as clear evidence, look at the squad as further evidence, and even those loaned out, how much evidence needed to take action on this dept ?

We then have the huge disconnect between fans and the club, he has presided over,

And lack of action in challenging the injustices of past few years- the silence is defeaning, and only widening the above chasism with fans

No one to blame but Peter for these failures

  19. P8ddy ,

Paul67 will not touch the architect of failure , his sponsor Mr Lawwell.

How can you claim to be a Celtic fan and not address the root cause of failure ?

Even if Ronny had played a blinder for 2 years, Sunday’s tactics of sitting in so submissively against the mighty Sevco would have been close to a sacking offence in its own right. Demonstrated a pathetic lack of self belief. It’s also clear the players didn’t have faith in it (witness Griffiths’ reaction at half time).

It’s very telling how often Ronny’s nice guy persona gets mentioned. That’s a complete and utter irrelevance and emphatically no substitute for having the basic attributes required to be a good football (let alone Celtic) manager. His team selections and tactical decisions have been absolutely baffling from day 1. He has no ability to build a settled team, build a team spirit or win pressure games. He also has no authority in his dealings with a control freak CEO with no insight into his own limitations on matters football.

They had a shape and game plan which they executed.

We have struggled with shape and game plan all season.

There is already a decent amount of very good players on our books for next season so do not think we are in as perilous a position as it seems.

We just need to rid ourselves of some deadweights and appoint a proper coach.

He should be told youth are an important part of the plan as despite Ronnie being touted as one who gives youth a chance suggests not.

KT being the exception but his chance came because the first two choices were unavailable despite him being obviously better than both.

Every other decent youth player was loaned out.

To be honest I don’t know where PL’s responsibilities start and stop, football wise. I think the CEO of Celtic should be paid well. It’s a 24/7 job and to a large extent you will never please all the people all the time. I am glad that Celtic are comparatively strong financially and will be there for my grandson and his children. I don’t know PL personally but don’t doubt his love of our club or his intentions. So, no personal slurs from me. Nor am I privy to the player/manger relationship but the evidence points to some friction. Biggest clue was Kris Commons and Manager splat.

When it came to Ronnys appointment I could see the logic but for me the biggest appointment failures were in the support team for the manager. The current 2 offered him nothing . Better to have an experienced head to educate and be his counsel as well as a “cuddler” for the players, if you know what I mean.

I think PL needs to learn more about “our” involvement in our club and listening more. That extends to better PR at Celtic on res 12 and other matters where we are quiet and don’t support the supporters. In other words taking no crap from anyone.

He should have resigned his position at SFA as his appointment there is a conflict given current situations

I also believe that NL is the ONLY person who can pick this up quickly and turn it around. None of this “we’ll have a look at the squad and give them a chance”. We know who should stay and go

Get 3 quality players 7/8 million and a strong support team, Sutton and Hartson for me, and bring the thunder back
