Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

  3. FOXY – you are spot on! we crated most chances, hit the woodwork a few times , at 2-2 we had three chances to win it. Rangers scored with a wonder goal and a poor pass deflected perfectly onto millers boot. The problem was with the possession – Celtic should be dominating these games and we are not – whether its rangers , hearts , molde etc.. the team or format is missing something and Ronny is responsible for this.

What you failed to include in your earlier replies to SFTB and TET was that when I posted that the Celtic Trust wanted to run the club was the smiley I put at the end of that post. Subsequently, I’ve explained to you the mission of the Trust.

We’re not stupid Macjay, we’re acutely aware that the likelihood of any form of Trust running Celtic is a vision that will never be achieved. What we want is greater dialogue with the support and fan representation on the Plc board. That need not be a member of the Trust.

Any notion that I personally joined the Trust because of any political motivation is absolutely laughable. I joined because I saw a group who genuinely believed that Celtic should be run with our founding ethos in mind and the ideals of Brother Walfrid should be maintained.

It’s now tiresome and insulting when you continually accuse the Trust of being ‘entryists’ when it’s simply not the case. I’ve made this known to you several times on here and still you refuse to accept what are actually the facts.

Agree with your summary of the game however, when you surrender the midfield and possession so easily and let the opposition play the ball around your box mistakes like the one that led to their first goal are more likely to happen. They aren’t any great shakes and if we’d a team similar to the one which played Motherwell I’d expect us to have forced them back and they would have erred at the back.

Just a thought: If RD is ‘leaving’ at the end of the season why doesn’t PL invite everybody who is interested in being the next Celtic manager to attend the next 5 games in order to sort out the absolute shite from the no quite shite and the occasional good player on the books at present so that he knows who to get rid of when he, whoever he is, takes over? Would certainly boost the attendances at the 5 games:) :).

  13. Joe Filippis Haircut on

When I look back there are for me several signs that Ronny needed to be stronger 1) Scott Brown the club Captain sitting in the street eating a kebab a poor example to anyone. 2) Kris Commons going ballistic at John Collins after being subbed and he was still played in the first team 3 ) Charlie Mulgrew walking off the park in a European game them claiming injury and now back in the first team. I feel Ronny should have diciplined each of these players and publicly let them know any further action of that kind they would be moved on.Unfortunately Ronny appeared to let it pass and of course the rumours started about him losing the dressing room . 3 senior players cocked a snoot at Ronny and it appears he failed to deal with them and that can lose you the respect of the entire squad. H.H.

    They aren’t any great shakes.

Some applied that to Maribor, Malmo and Molde.

That being the case implies that some one, possibly RD failed to learn how to deal with sides who were no great shakes.

Great shakes or not, it will be THEIR fans, repugnant or not who will be singing and dancing at the end of next months cup final.

Reading back i see some of Peter’s pals making an appearance. Fair enough, but I just wish Peter himself would make an appearance. Near on £20k a week and he needs honers. Poor guy. You know, you could get a very good manager or centre forward for £20k a week. Good CEOs of relatively small turnover businesses you can get for a whole lot less.

I believe RD didn’t learn from the first half against Hearts when a similar side took its couple of chances, led at halftime even though the Hearts side were walking through our midfield with great ease.

I cannot argue with your assessment of Ronny being weak in the dressing room.

The problem being that when NL for reasons as yet unexplained, left in a hurry, Ronny was available cheaply and thinking that he had won the lottery, extremely pliable. The perfect profile for a Celtic manager.

It’s a bit like omitting an accent in Spanish in that it might look strange, and change the pronunciation, but, certainly being seen in written form, shouldn’t change the meaning for anyone viewing it.

A wee caveat for anyone learning Spanish, accents can change the tense/ person of a verb, eg, hablo = I speak, but habló = he/she spoke.

Lawwell did not try something new with Deila’s appointment. It was an act of a utter desperation by a CEO who had been undermined by his boss who was all for giving Roy Keane the gig but then had to quickly find a replacement for RK when he flounced off after hearing there was no transfer budget. Never forget that Delia’s name was on shortlist to replace Mjallby as Lennon’s assistant. Lawwell hadn’t a clue who to go for after when Roy Keane unexpectedly turned down the manager’s job at CP. He turned to Deila in a moment of sheer panic and then dressed his appointment up as something it was clearly not. It was doomed to fail from the moment Desmond handed the poisoned chalice to his overpaid lapdug.

  30. Foxy@7-05pm

You may be right that we cannot blame the coach for missed chances.

But if you look at both goals against then he should shoulder responsibility.

Both goals came from shots in an area that has been a weakness all season long.

This was never addressed with the coach sticking with flawed system and same players.

The first came from a shot outside the that a centre mid made a feeble effort to block that resulted in them scoring rebound.

The second came from the same area and was a good strike but where was the centre mids.

In our loss to Aberdeen we dominated till again our centre mids failed to close that area down and another strike from that area found our net.

It has been a bugbear to me all season that the area was occupied by players unsuited to and our defenders where our often unfairly maligned due to their colleagues in the centre mid area.

If a layman like me could see why couldn’t any of our coaches.

The goals we lost were replicas of many this season and for the coach not to address means he is culpable.
