Handling our history well

859

We’ve talked about the big changes needed at the end of the season for a while now, specifically in terms of the manager’s position. I was never in favour of firing Ronny midseason. By that stage the die was cast for European football, and we were nip and tuck with Aberdeen in a fight for the league.

My guess was that Ronny could deliver the league, and I expected a cup or two as well. The cups have gone – and may have been won had we changed manager months ago, but we could also have appointed the wrong caretaker (a high probability) and reduced our title prospects. The decision then was what was the greater risk to the league title. All other things being equal, sitting tight was most probably going to deliver the league.

We’re now three wins from becoming champions. Ronny is one of only two Celtic managers never to have lost a league title, and whatever disappointments there have been, he’s applied himself honestly and openly. He’s also a title winning part of our history and we need to handle our history well, even as a project concludes.  Lessons from ’78 still rankle with some.

I’m not on the board. I’m a bigger Celtic Supporter than anybody on that board. I’ve got the stamps and the scars and the police record to prove it.

I never gave up on Brother Walfrid’s Dream, and thousands, upon thousands, of others have not to this day ditched our Celtic Soul either. Or maybe I really am detached from what my club actually stands for in this world of plenty and please give me some more even though my gut hangs over my belt by 12 1/2 legal bellies.

I see my club one way, I see it in shafts of humanity punctuated with good football, others see it through shafts of glory punctuated with football from any school. Any school.

I’m a bit confused by the people touting WGS and NL for the non-existent managerial vacancy at Celtic Park.

Many on this blog spent the best part of 4 years whining about WGS when he was at the helm, complaining that his team didn’t play “the Celtic way”, was boring to watch, adopted a Wattenaccio approach in Europe and, lest they forget, lost 0-5 to Artmedia Bratislava.

When the dissenters finally got their way WGS was replaced with Tony Mowbray, a “true Celtic mhan who understands the club and the expectations of the support, etc., etc.”. Look how that turned out!

Then we saw the emergency appointment of NL, a complete (management) rookie, and it wasn’t too far into his tenure before he had his own band of perpetual malcontents, again constantly whining about the style of play and frequent “shock” cup defeats (0-2 v second tier Ross County, 0-1 v Morton, 1-2 v Aberdeen, 0-1 v Kilmarnock, 1-2 v Hearts, 2-3 v St Mirren).

NL presided over some significant European results, with a famous win over Barcelona. But he also had several negatives in European competition, such as a 0-3 defeat v Braga in the CL qualifiers, swiftly followed by a 0-4 v Utrecht in the UL qualifiers. The following season saw FC Sion further embarras Celtic in European competition, before an administrative blunder saw UEFA intervene to put Celtic through. His team also endured a CL group phase with just one win, culminating with a 1-6 humiliation by the aforementioned Barcelona.

Ronny’s record isn’t actually significantly different than that of two of names being touted to replace him!

So, I guess the message is, be careful what you wish for.

I actually think he is a good coach, and quite probably a good manager.

But he has proven to be not a strong manager.

I said after Legia, first leg, that the players had to realise that NL was history, play as professionals, respect their new boss. They were diabolical that night,I blamed the players.

By the way,I blame the players for Sunday too.

But that is where Ronny failed. He didn’t get the players to work for him. They have worked against him,and tbh,he sometimes hasn’t helped himself.

But-players. Almost 100% to blame for Sunday. Apart from playing two wingers, the team was set up as most of us wanted. And those players should have mullered that lot.

I believe he should have gone in November 15 (it was clear to me he was out of his depth) to give the new man a chance to influence the team in prep for CL Qualifiers

Celtic Football Club have announced that there will be a special ceremony at the weekend.

A new statue, of Brendan Rodgers, made of bronze but with a brass neck, will be unveiled by the former Liverpool manager himself. “It is a great tribute to me, and a great likeness into the bargain, and I hope Celtic supporters the world over get a chance to pose alongside it, not too close mind you and no overposing, which is of course strictly forbidden”.

It is thought that Celtic commissioned the statue as a thank you for Brendan allowing his name to be linked with any forthcoming vacancies at the club.

  15. Where do we go from here and who with? Iwas hopefull for the Ronny evolution but it was not to be. Did he expect too much from our players or did we expect too much of him. Going on videos from Norway he spoke a good philosphy but maybe to much for Scottish football.

    NORWEGIAN TV

Welcome home Ronny, how was your time in Scotland?

    “Stressfull”

How did your game against Celtic’s newest rival go in the Scottish ccup?

“We lost on a penalty shootout”

So the game was over 120 minutes, how much possession did your opposition have?

“According to bbc they had over 70% that relates to roughly 85 minutes”

So with 85 minutes of possession you defence allowed you opponents 9 attempts at goal with only three on target?

“According to bbc, that is correct”

So your much maligned defence allowed an attempt on goal roughly every 9-1/2 minutes, what about your team?

“Again, according to the impartial, bbc we had the ball for roughly 35 minutes and 33 attempts on goal. 10 of these attempts were on target”

Well Ronny what is good about being back in Norway?

“I don’t have read Neganon & Mr Pastry every bloody day”

You’re right. Although we were poor I’ve never seen a game with so much bad luck and uncharacteristic mistakes for one side. They created one real chance and missed it. Handed first goal, our throw of second before guy hits a screamer. Brown and Roberts missing chances,Roberts embarrassingly so. Had to work for our two goals. Hit the post then bar with the ball hitting the goalie on the back and going wide. Then Rogic’s penalty the ball moving. I think someone up there wanted thems to win.

Henrik, don’t tarnish your legend.Big Mjallby will have marked his card, and he wouldn’t be another puppet for Lawwell.Left field one from me,Harry Redknapp. His teams play fast attacking football, encourages the flair players to go and play, good eye for a player, and can work to a budget. The only time he had any money was at Spurs, and he took them to the CL,despite the bigger budgets in the EPL at the time.Media friendly, would put bums on seats as he’s a good salesman.I’ve yet to hear any player who played under him, badmouth him.A final chance at the CL might be enough of a challenge, although all his jobs have been London and further south.

Henrik would be lucky to be PL’s managerial puppet.

When are people going to realise that while he’s the best player I’ve ever seen in a Celtic shirt, he’s simply not a manager?

  23. An Teach Solais on

    Afternoon all,

I am still struggling to come to terms with that result.

There are the usually calls for the coaching staff to be sacked and I wonder if and when a replacement is appointed what treatment will be meted out to him if we do not win all our games or successfully negotiate the qualifying rounds of the (hopefully Champions League) European competition.

Will he be subjected to vile epithets such as “Dud”, Coco” etc?

Even in the days of Barnes/Dalglish I thought that Celtic players should have been able to play for the jerseys, no matter how poor the manager.

If it is true that senior players have been undermining RD they should have been internally suspended/put on transfer list. Perhaps they read the blogs and assumed that if the manager had lost the trust of the supporters they had the green light. If they cannot put up with the norms of European

dietary and fitness schedules perhaps they are not real professionals.

Few of the names mentioned to succeed RD set my pulse raising and the ones which would are unlikely contenders IMHO. HH

  24. BMCUP

Thanks for the well thought out reply.

    But i beg to differ.

A good coach can implement his verbal promises.

I heard a lot of this modern European high tempo pressing system.

There was scant evidence of us playing it.

We have never seemed more than separate units with the odd fleeting moment of individual skill.

A good coach would in a two year period find the players to play his system or alter said system to use what talent he has available.

A good coach would recognise a players strengths and use him in a position to maximise their talent.

This entire season we have have had defensive problems in the centre mid area between the defense and midfield and a good coach would have recognised and either changed system or personnel.

I was not one who bashed the coaches appointment as i thought it was innovate thinking by our board for a change.

It was a gamble that failed.

His first season i saw little evidence he could implement his ideas on the field of play but was hoping this was just a cultural and not having right players issue.

I never critiqued him until this season thought i had doubts earlier.

This season we actually regressed and the same mistakes were constantly repeated.

I see no evidence of personal improvement of any player under his tutelage with the possible exception of Griff who unfortunately has regressed in the last six weeks.

So for me as i said a good guy but not a good coach.

  25. Can anybody check back to see how long the meltdown lasted the last time we lost to a Championship team in the cup.

  26. !!Bada Bing!! on

WEEMINGER-Correct mate,Henrik has done nothing in management to warrant being quoted with the Celtic job. That won’t stop Lawwell trying to get him in to shift Season Tickets IMO ……

  27. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

Now I know why all Peter’s been hoarding our money these past few years (apart from the obvious – to pay his fat bonus, ensure our old pals from Govan can catch up quickly etc). It’s clearly been to build a big bunker at Parkhead where he and his dwindling group of pals can hide when the game’s finally up.

Big Pedro’s had us on this ‘journey’ for years. The road to nowhere.

  28. !!BADA BING!! on 19TH APRIL 2016 3:32 PM

  30. Has anyone seriously suggested Henrik for the manager’s job? I hope not. If he’s asked, I hope he would refuse. Ronnie Deila had won his league before he came. Don’t think Henrik has done anything equivalent in Sweden. Spare us any “dream team” of whatever composition. I felt the same (indeed voiced it to one of those enthused by it) by Dalglish and Barnes. We would have been far better off sticking with Dr Jo.

If, as has been suggested, senior players have not acted as highly paid professionals, whoever they are, they should be out the door in the summer. If they are on binding contracts, they should be transfer listed and off-loaded, if anyone will take them on.
