Hayes, Koki Mizuno and the right-mid gap

1491

You and I have been doing this long enough to remember this place in meltdown at the prospect of Celtic signing a player from another SPL club. Domestically sourced talent was regarded as unimaginative, cheap, even. Contrast this with the utter joy when we signed Koki Mizuno, who was full-on exotic, but built for finer things then competitive football.

At 29, Aberdeen’s Irish international midfielder, Jonny Hayes is certainly unimaginative, and may be comparatively cheap, but he’s also a low-risk option for Celtic, who will know what they could get (and what they will not get) from the player.

With Patrick Roberts due to report to Manchester City on his return from holiday, Celtic are short of options for right-mid, with the first Champions League qualifier only five weeks away. The manager will view this gap in his squad as an unnecessary risk to next season’s objectives.

Is Johnny Hayes related to Hannibal?

I mean the governor can’t come straight out and give him amnesty. First he has to prove he deserves it.

As for Brendan being the best manager since Jock Stein there is s small matter of a European final to be checked off first.

    Anyway methinks

    New infrastructure in

    Hayes in

Roberts …. stall stall stall stall …. wait for it……wait for it …..in!

    Dembele out

But you see, that’s the point, and you’ve made it well.

If that’s the standard we’re judging this guy on it looks even more absurd.

But what other standard do we have?

    ‘We dererve better’.

  4. I don’t think Roberts will come. He will feel that he has something to offer in a top ten team in England, and he does. The teams I believe still need home grown talent under premier league rules and he fits the bill.

If you look at say Liverpool and Everton both these teams would be improved imo with the weeman in them.

    If I’m wrong, delighted

There’s no mission Celtic will sign Patrick Roberts.

The best that we can hope for is Manchester City agreeing to loan Celtic the player for another season.

Because if they are going to sell their player – obviously they will be looking for as much money as they can.

If some EPL outfit bids say £12million, they are hardly gonna knock it back and accept a £6.5million offer from Celtic.

Then there is wages – Is the player going to reject £40k per week for £25k at Celtic?

It’s out of the club’s hand.

Hopefully I’m wrong, but a doubt it.

  6. Three signings in the week after we win the treble – looks like the Huns are making a statement of intent.

The intent to go bust before August.

  7. Couple of thoughts on Hayes

    We may sign him

    We may not

    Thanks for your attention

  8. REGGIE @ 6:25 PM,

“It could be they believe Roberts is attainable and this is insurance, but we’re not supposed to be signing squad players.”

Well, here’s the crux of the matter.

If we take TET’S view (and I agree) that Hayes could provide back up, specifically to Sinclair does that make him a squad player?

I’d prefer to look at what John Kennedy said, paraphrasing – We’ll only sign players that are better than what we have…

    So in that context…

What about Paddy…? Well Jonny isn’t an improvement but the again, we don’t have Paddy.

What about James F….? Well it could well be that the coaching staff may believe Jonny is better, I believe Forrest is younger and better, so IMO not an improvement.

What about GMS…? Well when you take into account injuries and form, Jonny Hayes is currently better arguably a considerable improvement, in what we have.

So in that context for me the Jonny Hayes signing will fit in with Our Strategy as outlined by JK.

    Hail Hail

  9. !!Bada Bing!! on

He proved he has what it takes to play at that level. Hayes never has. At 29, if it was gonna happen it would have already. What have Celtic managers been doing for the last eight years? Waiting for him to show it? We could have had this guy ages ago if he was good enough.

As a squad player, yes, adequate. But no more than that. Let me put it this way, nobody’s been breaking down Aberdeen’s door to sign him. As someone said earlier, if we pay £1 million for the guy it’ll be a £1 million more than anyone ever paid for him before

Cardiff, Fulham , Birmingham after Hayes, you quoted Barry Robson who was also 29 when he signed for us

Tell you now….we wont be signing Paddy.

And if you think we will canter CL qualification…think again.

The team needs strengthened, anything else is just bs.

Haven’t read back so don’t know if anybody has said anything about the wait today at ticket office? My old man stood from just after 9 this morning and didn’t get home till 4.

Note the sarcasm, I just feel we should be aiming much higher if we are to progress in the Champions League, that’s all.

Patrick Roberts thrives on playing with a team on the front foot.

Outside of the top four or five in England, the others are in basic survival mode, and would possibly consider him a luxury player.

Therefore, I believe that he needs another couple of seasons with us, to mature physically and to perfect his game.

Thereafter, the sky is the limit for him.

One part of Hayes’ game is getting his team up the park.

As such, he could be a handy asset in tough CL away fixtures, when the defence is under the cosh.

  14. “Most were in favour of signing Leigh” – certainly dont remember that at the time!

I was castigated for suggesting Leigh Griffuths would be a good signing for Celtic. My only claim to fame on CQN for being the first to suggest it.

It is always about opinions. My opinion is that Jonny Hayes would be a great addition. Time for me to man the barricades but i think he is a much better player than James Forrest.

    I agree 100%

Whats the point of earning all the CL money, if we wont spend any of it.

Had enough of that. I thought we were trying to do things differently.

  16. Patrick Roberts however – that lad is a born entertainer and all the stops should be pulled out to sign him.

  17. BABASONICOS71 on

Celtic are interested in Croatian forward Ivan Sumaglica. He currently plays for Ovcajeben who have finished 2nd in their league the past 3 seasons. The 29 year old is considered to be his team’s best player and as well as providing numerous assists has also popped up with some long range spectacular goals himself. It is thought he would cost around £1m and not be as good as Paddy Roberts.Celtic manager Brenda Rodgers when asked about interest in the player said,”I don’t really want him but the fans need something to moan about and I believe the signing of a player who isn’t as good as Paddy Roberts will give them the opportunity to vent until they’re happy with their unhappiness.”

  18. garygillespieshamstring on

Was pleased to read the article about baby Dembele signing a new deal.

However I did get a bit worried half way through that we had signed the wrong brother who makes his money singing in pubs.

I just hope the name change to Karaoke Dembele is a result of predictive text.

  19. Know the Struth on

i read somwhere Johny Hayes has a much better assist ratio than paddy. meybee Brendan just wants someone for back up incasewe dont get paddy back….Anyway i think he will leave CHRISTIE THERE ON LOAN AND SWAP hayes for GMS . in the last 2 games abainst the dons HAYESSCORED TWO BELTERSAGAINST US. THIS WONT STOP WHAT brendanslooking to do in the long term in the transfer window but Hayes could be a no brainerif we can swap him for GMS and leave Christie there on loan for aseason

  20. The only reason we had the pleasure of young Paddy in our ranks was because of certain circumstances. The reason we have any chance of him playing for us next season, will be again because of certain circumstances. I hope it happens, but have no idea how it will. Does that make sense?????
