You and I have been doing this long enough to remember this place in meltdown at the prospect of Celtic signing a player from another SPL club. Domestically sourced talent was regarded as unimaginative, cheap, even. Contrast this with the utter joy when we signed Koki Mizuno, who was full-on exotic, but built for finer things then competitive football.
At 29, Aberdeen’s Irish international midfielder, Jonny Hayes is certainly unimaginative, and may be comparatively cheap, but he’s also a low-risk option for Celtic, who will know what they could get (and what they will not get) from the player.
With Patrick Roberts due to report to Manchester City on his return from holiday, Celtic are short of options for right-mid, with the first Champions League qualifier only five weeks away. The manager will view this gap in his squad as an unnecessary risk to next season’s objectives.

WHAT IS THE STARS on 2ND JUNE 2017 3:38 PM
We need a Dubliner in the team

Thats just quackers!
There are absolutely no circumstances under which Craig Whyte can be found Not Guilty. Not Proven. Maybe.
For Whyte to be innocent would cast serious doubts on the competence of SDM and the Fine Wine and Succulent Lamb journalists who fawned over SDM for years and who wrote of Whyte having off the Radar Riches.
I see young Karamoko has signed youth forms. I’m quietly confident that we’ll go into the new season with two Dembele’s on our books.
Although I’m a bit Hayezee about other transfers.
James Forrest
a 14 year old who may never even become a professional footballer
Jonny Hayes would beat him at chess, football, table tennis and wrestling
OOOPS
Late to the party, as usual, with my response to Hayes agent, WITS.
WHAT IS THE STARS:
I am fan of potential. If he applies himself he’ll be fine.
On Tiger Woods;
An excellent, if somewhat sad, article in The Guardian .

Somewhat sad. Autocorrect. I hate it.
Who would win in a fight with Johnny Hayes and Momo Sylla?
RIOSKORRIE on 2ND JUNE 2017 3:23 PM
Cracker buddy, shared on FB.
HH Dan
Bourne, Momo , as he would have his compatriot , Dianbobo Balde , for hauners
Where in the world does the name Dembele come from?????
It’s funny how we signed Eboue Kouassi and not one Celtic fan complained despite the fact nobody had heard of him and he’s hardly kicked a ball in anger during his career yet thousands are up in arms about signing Hayes, who has scored in his last two outings against the Invincibles.
Just there seems to be a lot of football players with that name
In Kilmarnock visiting my mum and having a beer in the sun, can’t say that too often in Ayrshire.
Hayes guy, good cover nothing wrong with that…..
Mit
As was stated is the video not breach of personal privacy in the US?
HH
Timjim
Mali the name originates from.
THETIMREAPER:
Not so much, no. Let me explain it to you, like you’re daft. Which you’re not.
Eboue was signed to compliment a very gifted midfield. He wasn’t signed to replace a departing Stuart Amstrong or Scott Brown. And even if he had been, we are well covered in that area.
It was clear we were buying POTENTIAL. Hence no complaints.
Here’s we’ve got a vacancy in the team left by a departing player with world class potential.
And it appears – at the moment – like he will be replaced by an SPL midfielder who’s played here for EIGHT YEARS and wasn’t good enough at any point to play for a team which HADN’T just won every domestic game.
Easy enough to understand, if you want to.
DD
Maybe we should invest in an academy over there
THETIMREAPER:
By the way, at the time, I called the Eboue signing a £2.5 million punt. On a kid we’d never heard of.
And I also bemoaned the fact he was the ONLY signing in that window.
In other words, I’m a generally miserable git. :)
In case THAT wasn’t obvious!
To add to the Jonny Hayes debate. He was the opponent I feared most domestically last season. The best player in the SPFL, outwith Celtic imo. If he is being signed to replace GMS and as back up to Scott Sinclair, I would be happy.
DELANEYS DUNKY:
Yeah I don’t think I’d have many complaints on that score.
TheTimReaper
Cannae begin to imagine what this place would have been like when we signed Agathe!
JF
If he is being signed to replace Patrick Roberts, I would be less happy. :)
James Forrest, Where did you get info that Hayes is being brought in to replace Roberts.?
My understanding is that if it is at all possible Celtic will try to get Paddy back.
I think Hayes is a proven decent SPFL player arguably one of the best non Celtic players in the League.
If he comes he will stay & play for 3 or 4 years and at the money being mentioned he seems an attractive addition.
Comparing him directly to Roberts is unfair.
CORKCELT:
“Comparing him directly to Roberts is unfair.”
Agreed. Which is exactly why I hope no-one at our club thinks one’s an adequate replacement for the other.
JAMES FORREST on 2ND JUNE 2017 5:13 PM
James, your reaction is completely over the top. You cannot say for sure that Hayes will be bought to replace Roberts, that is your assumption. We will need to wait and see what happens in that respect whether it is Roberts or someone else. If Brendan wants to sign Hayes then thats up to him and his team, if he succeeds or fails then Brendan is up there to be shot at. If you object to the signing then fine, that’s your right. But i think you’ve went way over the top. Have some faith in Brendan Rodgers, i think he’s earned it.
Timjim
West Africa is ripe recruitment area for young, hungry fitba players.
James F
To you it might appear that is the reason. If indeed Brendan does sign him, who knows he might have a different reason. Now would that not be a big surprise.
By the time the international is over then our players will only have a month before CL qualifiers start – Broonie has booked a fortnight in Satlcoats staying at buzzbombs
Id rather see Karamoko in the team
He is better than Johnny Hayes:)
HH
THETIMREAPER:
I’ve lost count of the NUMBER of times I’ve said today that I believe Hayes is an adequate squad player. That he will do a job. I’ve lost count of the NUMBER of times I’ve said I don’t blame Brendan for signing a player like this if his resources are limited. In addition, I’ve REPEATEDLY said that if this if we’re still intending to bring in a high profile player in that position then all’s good in the world.
My complaint stands IF IF IF IF IF Roberts is replaced by Jonny Hayes.
And I’m the one jumping the gun here?
I don’t think my position is unreasonable. If this is the plan then re-adjust expectations accordingly. If it’s NOT the plan then I await what the plan actually is.
Good to hear Karamoko has signed up for us – he is in the best place to get the best chance to flourish
Focus on Celtic @FocusOnCeltic
Karmoko’s father: He has been here since he was six, and it would be brilliant to see him playing at Celtic Park in front of 60,000 fans.
TGM
Maybe in two years when Karamoko is 16, he might get a first team game. Let him grow and develop first mate.
HH
Surprised with the Johnny Hayes story but he has already worked with Brendan Rodgers down south and obviously Brendan knows what he can bring to the team over a long season on heavy pitches etc.. Paddy Roberts was in super form in recent weeks but he shone on dry fast pitches.
Hayes was good enough to be included by Martin O’Neil and Roy Keane in the Irish squad and did very well when called upon in a recent International match. He will probably improve even more if he gets the chance to join up again with Brendan and I doubt if he will be in awe of playing for a big club like Celtic. interesting times ahead.
DD
At the wind up bud
Karamoko is too wee, still better than JH though:)
